He should have been given at least a life sentence with no possibility of parole. Good ole liberal Maryland--the land where crime obviously pays!

You don't know the facts of the case. The man who was killed (doesn't matter that he was a cop- he was off duty, he NEVER identified himself as such so it's impertinent)was drunk driving (BAC >0.08), and drinking alcohol in his car. The testimonies were proven false on both sides. You can't give someone 1st degree murder when the investigation/ presented evidence was as flawed as it was. The point was that the man threatened to shoot the kids, and the defendant 'truly' felt like the guy was going to kill him. Whether that's 'reasonable' or not, it doesn't matter. This is why he got manslaughter, not murder. Those are the laws of the United States, not just 'ole liberal Maryland--the land where crime obviously pays!'

It is an absolute terrible tragedy that this happened, but the way the news reports it is very biased. If we don't like our laws, we should change them, but we can't bend them on a case-by-case basis.
