Cambridge Police are investigating a Tuesday afternoon attempted abduction where a man tried to persuade an 11-year-old girl to get into his pickup truck.
An officer was flagged down at 12:40 p.m. by a man and his daughter, police said. The girl said she was walking in the 1700-block of Race Street at about 12:15 p.m. when a large black truck pulled out of the Snow's Turn parking lot at 1801 Race St. and drove toward her with the window rolled down.
A white man, about 70 years old with a grey beard, drove up next to the girl and tried to persuade her to get in his truck by telling her he needed help looking for his dog, police said.
The girl told the man she was not going to help him and walked away, but the man "kept insisting" for her to get in his truck, police said. The girl ran away to a nearby business where they called her parents.
The pickup truck was black with an extended cab, a toolbox in the back and step bars on the side, police said.

Creep. This is disturbing. No offense to the parents, but why was the 11 yr old walking around by herself? Was it in a neighborhood, or close proximity to her home? Just wondering. I am not familiar with all of Cambridge. It's a good thing her parents taught her to run away.

CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Cambridge police detectives on Wednesday said they have dropped their investigation into a reported attempted child abduction after they found out that the incident never occurred.
Police said the investigation stemmed from an incident alleged to have happened early Tuesday afternoon. An officer was flagged down by a man who stated that someone had attempted to abduct his daughter on the 1700 block of Race Street. The man's daughter, who was by her father's side, stated that a short time earlier she was walking along the 1700 block of Race Street when a large pickup pulled out of a parking lot and passed by her. The child further stated that the driver, who she described as an "older white man," tried to persuade her to get into his truck by telling her that he needed her to help look for his dog. The child said that she told the man that she was not going to help him and walked away but the man kept insisting. The girl said that she then began to run and made her way to a nearby business where she phoned her parents.
But a police investigation into the child's claims led detectives to conclude that the attempted abduction did not happen at all. According to police, detectives received information from the child that the first report she gave was not accurate. As a result of this new information, detectives determined that the version of events given by the child was not supported by physical evidence that had been gathered during the course of the investigation.
Even though police concluded the attempted abduction did not actually happen, no charges are expected to be filed against her
