Black Student Sues School, Says Race Prevented Her From Being Valedictorian

Kymberly Wimberly, a black 18-year-old from McGehee, Arkansas, says she had the highest G.P.A. in her graduating high school class and should have been the school's sole valedictorian.

But according to a lawsuit filed by Wimberly on July 21 that alleges racial discrimination, McGehee High School appointed a white student with a lower G.P.A. to be the "co-valedictorian." That decision, the lawsuit alleges, falls in line with a "pattern and practice of school administrators and personnel treating the African-American students less favorably than the Caucasian ones,"

A couple of thoughts here....

I'm not racist but, I know racism exists. And if this is in fact some form of discrimination then I would say, I wish her luck in having the record changed. As far as "punitive damages", give me a break! I can't imagine how she has suffered monetarily and I don't find it necessary to punish the taxpayer(s) for any wrongdoing. According to what I understand about the term "Valedictorian", it doesn't begin and end with GPA.

It might have had something to do with the fact that this high school senior had a 2 yr old child, meaning she became a mother at 16.That is not the kind of role model any school should be promoting. It may not be PC to say so,but alot of people are sick of having irresponsible teenage mothers be glorified thanks to all the TV shows promoting them.Teenage pregnancy is a huge problem and I applaud this school for making a stand.
Also,
Who will be supporting and caring for her and her kid while she goes to college?Anyone?

anonymous 2:04, what a load of CRAP!

You know what, this goes out to ALL of you Idiots who point fingers at young women who have had children at a young age.

This young lady has a BETTER grade average, period. The FACT that she has a child and has acomplished such greatness with her education means she DESERVES that SOLE honor.

You go back hundreds of years and 16 was a late age for women to be married. Just because the US made it law to decide 16 is too young, (which I don't necessarily disagree with) doesn't mean that these MILLIONS of young parents can't handle such a situation and wuite frankly this young lady has done just that.

I have rejected probably 20 comments on this Post because a select few people are such racists and or JT and his friends are trying to get racist comments through again.

I hope this young lady wins.

quite frankly, sorry.

Totally agree with Joe. The valedictorian has the highest GPA by definition.

Hardly ever agree with you Joe but you are spot on here. A clear dcase of discrimination.

from cnn

The handbook says students will be given the same class rank only if their grades are the same, but in deciding class rank, students with lower GPAs who are taking more or harder classes will not be penalized. Gathen said the Wimberly's co-valedictorian had half a credit more than Wimberly and the difference in the students' GPAs was .03 or .05. Gathen said the outcome would have been the same were the situations reversed.

Joe, it really iritstes me when you go off on people like this yet, you wont publish comments that differ from your opinion. The truth of the matter is, "Valedictorian" is more than just GPA. You really need to do your homework (<---pardon the pun) here. You need to chill ou sometimes and remember that you can give your opinion without demeaning others. JMO.........
