Sussex County Avoids Property Tax Increase

Sussex County residents will not be paying more in property taxes next year under a $140 million budget approved Tuesday.

For the 22nd year, the county's financial plan includes no property tax increase, but it does eliminate annual raises for county workers while restoring cuts to firefighter and police grants.

The budget for fiscal year 2012, starting July 1, is projected to see a 7 percent increase in real estatetransfer tax income, once the county's largest revenue source but which has slipped in recent years.

The economy continues to pose a challenge to budget-writers, said County Administrator David Baker, but recent signs make officials optimistic.

I love Sussex County. They have the best of Council members and County Administration there is. All of them have great values. David Baker is a great man. I worked for him through the CETA program as a teenager when he was in the Engineering Department.
