Obama's Virginia Volunteers Gearing Up for 2012

In a colorless union hall along a gritty stretch of South Richmond, a collection of eager volunteers stood from their metal folding chairs one at a time to explain why they had come.


An investment banker didn't have time to get involved in Barack Obama's presidential campaign three years ago. One young woman lived abroad in 2008 and remembers Obama campaign signs in shop windows. Another received government aid during a hard time and wants to "give back" to her country.

The collection of new voters, college students, civil-rights-era fighters, and suburbanites had assembled to re-elect Obama in Virginia.

The group of 50-some summer fellows recently trained for two days in a hall tucked off of Belt Boulevard. They will spend the summer fanned across the state dusting off the campaign network that propelled Obamain 2008 to capture the state's electoral votes for a Democrat for the first time in 44 years.

Virginia will not be won by Obama in 2012. I see him losing by 12-14 points in VA if any credible candidate gets the GOP nomination.
