NBC Apologizes for Omitting "Under God" from Pledge of Allegiance

NBC issued an on-air apology Sunday for omitting the words "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance during its coverage of golf's U.S. Open.

The words were edited out of a clip of children reciting the oath -- a move immediately noted by viewers, who took to Twitter and various blogs to voice their anger, the Huffington Post reported.

In a statement during the broadcast, NBC commentator Dan Hicks said, "We began our coverage of this final round just about three hours ago and when we did it was our intent to begin the coverage of this U.S. Open Championship with a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship being held in our nation's capital for the third time.

"Regrettably, a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out. It was not done to upset anyone and we'd like to apologize to those of you who were offended by it."

The words "under God" were not in the original pledge from 1892 and were not added until 1954.

While this was going on, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy romped to an eight-shot win to claim his first major title with a record-low 72-hole score of 16-under par at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

But they apologized. This makes me sick and I doubt I will be watching anything that is connected to NBC any longer. It was intentional and they don't care who they offend as long as we are not Muslim.

So sick of the new America where people are to wet in the pants to offend anyone. Sometimes being who you are does offend others, does that mean you should change who you are? I for one do not believe so.

if anyone thinks that this was done accidentally.. i have some swamp land in Florida to sell you.

NBC is one step above the communist news network.. atheists all of them

Is anyone surprised that it was NBC that done this, after all that is the most pro Obama network of the three major networks.

The "edit" was done on purpose, with full intent. No other explanantion. They would be better served by understanding they are broadcasting to AMERICA. Where the great majority, the ovewhelming majority, believe in God. So, instead of "apologizing" (meaningless in view of the circumstances), terminate the people who decided to "edit" that pledge. THAT would impress me.

NBC fumbled the ball on this one. They should have either used the pledge in it's entirety, or not used it at all.

If they were trying to make a point, then they did so poorly. I support those who find the intention of their "edit" to be disingenuous and shameful.... which it was, my opinion based on the fact that they offered apologies for it.

If they were trying to make a point.. they chose a really poor way of trying to make it.

The Fox News article... also does a really poor job of explaining WHY "under god" was added to the Pledge, nor do they address any dissent or support for it... which is the crux of the discussion.. isn't it? Shame on Fox, and shame on NBC.

It disheartens me so.. that our NEWS organizations... are not.
