Memorial Day Thoughts

I sit here reading about car sales, mattress sales, deals at the local eateries and putt-putt golf courses all to celebrate Memorial Day. I see videos of disgustingly obese underdressed tourons waddling up and down the Boardwalk stuffing their pie-holes with French fries and pizza with the grease dripping down their multiple chins all the time gurgling out “Happy Memorial Day” .  And it makes me sad.

Proclaimed “Decoration Day” on 5 May, 1868, General Order No. 11, by the National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic commander, General John Logan, it is the day of national remembrance of those who have died in our nation’s service.  President Johnson re-affirmed this National Holiday in May of 1966.  I was 16 then and would join the USAF 2 years later.

Memorial Day is NOT a day of celebration, BBQ’s and obscene behavior. It is a day of reflection and a day to honor those that have paid the ultimate price.
I am a patriot. Are you?

Agreed - The only people who remember vets are vets and their families.

All others say " Party on Dudes " and will never understand.

Bring back the draft and make every abled bodied man serve.

Craig, I do both. As a veteran, I reflect and remember. As a person with family, I also celebrate with the living on a National Holiday. Since when can't you do both?
