Metrobus Drivers Carry Guns For Protection

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- In past years, Metrobus operators have been spit on, cussed out, assaulted and threatened.

The bus operators' union has gathered the numbers for attacks on drivers in the past year and provided them to 9NEWS NOW.

There have been 59 passenger assaults against bus operators, 135 attempted assaults and 140 threats.

Leaders of the Amalgamated Transit Union say only about 40% of the assaults are reported because bus drivers are convinced Metro officials will do nothing about them.
