Why I’ll Be Voting For Laura Mitchell In April
Events during the past week have convinced me to cast my third vote for Ms. Mitchell, who is an intelligent and moderate person – the type that we need on the Salisbury City Council now more than ever after the specter of the “Dream Team” and more recently the Comegys-Shields-Smith nightmare. Her response to questions at the PACE/Chamber of Commerce forum was uniformly outstanding, to say the very least. And consider how she has replied – with grace and civility – to the false allegations that were recently made in a comment that was posted on this blog.
It appears that a certain group composed mostly of nonresidents of Salisbury, which has controlled the Council under the regimes mentioned above, realizes that, if Ms. Mitchell and certain other candidates are elected, it would place the power back into the hands of City residents. For that reason they are doing everything possible to smear those candidates, using some of the same tactics as they did in past elections and some new ones too.
Ms. Mitchell has my vote, and many others from folks that I know.

She has my vote also.
Calling "Imclain" -- please start your slime machine ASAP.
ask Comegys,Shields,about smear tatics.
I applaud the way she has handle these allegations. I will again vote blank ballot, because no matter who tosses their hat in the ring, the system continues to fail the citizens of Salisbury.
11;20...about 40 or more people commented on the story about her (probably more) and I didn't ORIGINATE anything. And you single ME out? LOL...me thinks you give me too much undeserved attention.
12:40-
What goes around, comes around.
And you've earned it, baby!
i will vote for her too. The problem in this community continues to be its residents.
12:40,your just EASY!
Too funny...nonresidents can't vote. Power is in the residents hands...is there a current or past Council member who doesn't live in the City limits?
muir boda contributed to her campaign on the records released. tell you anything. as did michael weisner, real estate agent.
2:34 nailed it. Power has never been in non residents hands. How could you say that? Our economy and jobs are built around non residents but council members are elected by city citizens. Every mess in this city was caused by politicians voted in by us! Stop blaming non residents. And the power rests in a few of the residents hands anyway..have you seen voter turn outs lately. Salisbury citizens dont care enough about our town to even vote. Mitchell is not what we need...we need an aggressive business oriented man or woman.
I agree with 2:34...if the "certain groups composed mostly of nonresidents of Salisbury" were so strong why is Jim the Mayor?
I think when the blame game and the pointing of fingers stop we will be a stronger City.
I'm a business owner in Salisbury, however, I don't reside in City limits. I take offense to the idea that i'm the cause for the way the Council and Mayor act!!!
I provide jobs to County and City residents, I pay taxes, and I provide a service to residents and vistors. On top of all that I can't vote for the people who run the City. It was my choice not to live in the City and I'm fine with that fact, but don't start saying it's my fault for all your problems of the City.
How about all of us "nonresident" business owners close our doors!!!! What will happen then...
And if I want to support a candidate with my hard earned money... I will!!! Why would I want to see the City destroyed? Think before you write!!!!!
Jim is the mayor because Comegys was the alternative, and everybody had had just about enough of his kind of government, the "Smith- Comegys-Shields nightmare" that followed the Dunn-Comegys-Cathcart horror.
Jim reminds me of Obama. Oh and stop blaming non residents. I don't think anyone in the county would approve of the council or mayor. For having so much control they don't seem to get their way that often. City is to blame for it's condition. Pointing the finger solves jack. Maybe non residents should have control, city residents don't even get up to vote.. Too busy selling drugs and hanging out on their front porch I guess. City has no true voice and everyone knows it. Most who can live outside the city do just that. Why?
I think Laura keeps promoting herself on here as anonymous comment!!

If you check a little closer you will also see that Jim Ireton also contributed. What message does that send? Oh yeah, that she is liked by a lot of different people and is moderate enough to garner support from everyone (including one of her opponents, the mayor, and members of SAPOA).If she can bring all these people together before she is elected, imagine what she will be able to do to bring the city together after she is elected. The other candidates seem to be dividing the city and she is unifying. Perhaps most of the commenters here could learn a thing or two from Ms. Mitchell.
The City started going down hill once the business owners/property owners lost the right to vote!!! It was about 17 years ago that took place. People fail to realize that a strong healthy City is what all business people want. They own a business to make money...why would they want a City to fail?
What you have left is a bunch of neighborhood groups seeking power...this is what they gave you!!! High unemployment, not business freindly, taxes always going up, fees rising on the business community, high crime, and disfuctional Council and Mayor!
I would say ...you my friend are what ruined this City...not nonresidents!!! Get a clue or start a business!!
548, I completely agree. People who work all day in city and/or own a business there but live in the county should have a city vote. Do they not pay city taxes? Taxation without representation? Could someone explain why that is ok? I believe thatb was a state law or federal law but I just don't understand why someone can pay city property taxes, city sewer/water bills, city business property taxes, etc and have no voice in the city. Just seems a little off to me, it's their city too. Right?
I am a city resident, but I can not support Laura Mitchell. Why? The employees of Milford Twilley were putting leaflets on all city property they own. Laura is related to the comptroller of Milford Twilley rental management. There is a lot going on about rental properties in the city. Twilley wants someone that can rely on to help them not get laws passed that would affect them. Such as if the police are called several times to a complex. Someone should be evicted. Now if you owned lots of low income property, how could this affect you, See what I mean. No to Laura
859...I don't follow Mitchell since I live in county, but that's a horrible law they are trying to push. You mentioned only portion of it. My understanding is that after a certain amount of calls tona property landlord gets fined. I believe law gives landlord authority to file eviction which may or may be good but fining landlords, which is passed onto tenants, for crime is ridiculous. Crime is a city issue and has nothing to do with the home or apt. Houses don't steal, sell drugs, murder, etc, people do. This law will punish people for calling the police..does that make sense? Tenants won't call if they fear fines.
8:59...your whats wrong with the City...i'm calling you out!!! You mean she may actually listen to all groups...what a great idea.
In life you don't always get what you want...it's called compromise! Something our City has lost over the years...Maybe Laura will be great maybe she won't...but you base your judgement on where a family member works...wow..thats what i call an educated voter.
Your right...the reason crime is so high is because we don't have a three strike your out policy...what about unemployment, a broken sewer plant, crumbling infrastructure, single parent families, double taxation for city residents...your right those landlords have caused all those problems...i want to live in your little world!!!!!
8:59...someone should take your computer away from you!!!!!
The three Camden Crazies that pipe in on this blog regularly are really getting old and your arguments are tired. The rest of the people in the city want to come together and practice civility and you folks are still pushing the old agenda of pointing fingers, inaccurate broad generalization and continual promotion of your own best interests. It is clear to everyone else who lives in the city and the business community at large that your ideas don't work and are only resulting in more divisiveness, and general unhappiness in our once fair city. We want new blood. We want civility. And, if you can't change your intolerant attitude, we want you to pound sand.
