Old school ways would dictate that he would pay but times have changed. I am female and would not necessarily expect him to pay now a days but would make sure that I had enough money to cover my own meal. Let him wash the dishes for his meal. Plus, its a guarantee that we would never go out to dinner again unless I invited him. And he would have to had really impressed me to even do that! Otherwise, the first date would also be the last date.
I think that whomever requests the date should pay. They are the one who is asking for the company of the other. In exchange for the attention and presence of the guest, the "asker" is offering activities.
As a guy, I've never thought twice about paying for a date, especially when I initiated it. One woman I dated explained the method above, it seems fair, and that was her reason to pay for our second date as our first date was a blind one. Whenever she asked if I wanted to do something, she would pay. At the same time, if it was my request to eat someplace or go to a concert, etc., I would pay for those activities.
This worked so great, that I married her. Now it's all "our" money, but we still take care of the charges just like we did when we just started dating.
women want equal rights but then expect this kind of thing (among others). cant have it both ways ladies. i am hardcore traditionalist and believe women should be home, men should provide and hold doors open etc... IMO the fact that people have lost their roles has lead to the decline of society.
Yes and I would not go out on the first date with a guy who couldn't pay. There are differences between a man/gentleman verses a guy/momma boy. 1210pm, you must go out with guys/momma boys.
Guys should ALWAYS pay for the date unless it's his bday or something. Matter of fact, until yall stop "dating" and are actually in a long term relationship/marriage, he should be paying for just about everything.
You earn your money to spend on yourself, not some dude.
If I am the one, thats doing the asking, for someone to sit down and have a quiet and leisurely meal with me, be it male or female, then I expect and want to pay the complete bill and all gratuities. The very least that they will leave with is a full stomach, even if my presence was less then desired. That's what any gentleman does...period.
I am female and I don't think that it is a woman's place to ask a man out. That being given, the guy should most definitely pick up the tab. If I like the guy and he doesn't give pressure for returned favors, than he will get more than his fair share of good eating when I invite him into my home.
Depends, is she a liberal?.....she pays for EVERYTHING, conservative, I'll pay my share. VOTE AMERICA NOV 2 !!!!!! Now, for my opinion, yes, I'll pay the first date. 'Night all.

a gentleman should, but not sure about a "guy"
Of course and I'm a guy.
Pay or go dutch, depending if the other requests to pay.
Depends on who asks whom
Yes, esp on a first date. It's part of courtship. Just how it always has been.

No I am independent till we get hitched. Let her pay her own way.
No. Women are liberated now. They will be offended if you insist on paying.
Women do not want to be treated the way your grandfather treated your grandmother.

Equal rights is women getting equal treatment, while retaining all of the benefits of being the weaker sex.
