SHOREBIRDS GAME NOTES: 9/3 vs. Augusta

STAT OF THE DAY: The Shorebirds have 40 triples this year, the most in a single season since the 2000 campaign (42). Willie Harris led the ’00 team with 10.

PREVIEW: Following a third straight series split (Hickory, Hagerstown, Kannapolis) the Shorebirds play game one against the Augusta GreenJackets (San Francisco Giants). Tonight marks the first meeting between the two clubs since July 14, 2008 at Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds split a four-game series with Augusta back in 2008. The Shorebirds last visited Lake Olmstead Stadium between August 12 and 15 of 2007.

WELCOME BACK DAVE: Current Augusta manager Dave Machemer managed the Delmarva Shorebirds during the 1998 campaign. He guided the ‘98 club to a 81-61 record and a trip to the SAL playoffs. Dave also managed Double-A Bowie in 2001 (59-82).

ASSISTING THE TEAM: Right fielder Mikey Planeta leads the South Atlantic League with 16 outfield assists this season. The last player to record more than 16 was Arturo Rivas, who notched 17 in 2005. According to the current MILB stats portal and The Baseball Cube, nobody in Shorebirds history has ever recorded more than 17 outfield assists in a single season.

OFFENSIVE THRIVING, DEFENSE NOT: Shortstop Garabez Rosa has seen his offensive numbers boom of late but his defensive numbers have worsened. Rosa has hit safely in seven of his last eight games (15-35, .428). Rosa has committed five errors in the last six games (three last) night and leads the league with 46.

55 1-RUN GAMES: The Shorebirds lead the league this season with 55 1-run games. They are 23-22 in those games. For comparison, Augusta has played in 43 one-run games.

SIX STRAIGHT WINNING SEASONS: The Augusta GreenJackets became a San Francisco Giants affiliate in 2005. 2010 will mark their sixth straight winning season in Augusta. Including this season, the GreenJackets are 497-329 since 2005. They won the SAL crown in 2008.

CAROLUS 7-STRAIGHT: Levi Carolus has reached base in seven straight games dating back 8/25. His on-base percentage has gone from .245 to .270 during the recent stretch.
