If You Had To Cut Your Household Budget,
Would You Cut Your Pets Luxuries Or Spouses?

What is a pet luxury? I have a dog and I feed it, bathe it and take it to the vet when it is sick. Anything beyond that is ridiculous. My spouse also has the same luxuries as the dog.

Neither of those things were already IN our budget. What would a pet luxury be, anyway? A new chewy every day? Canned food? Designer collars? CLOTHES?
My spouse pays for his own luxuries...food, gasoline, electric bills, CATV bill (THAT one would really be missed, maybe that IS one of those that you're speaking of).
We're at bare-bones already.
BTW, in our house we blame the economic woes on the war in Iraq and Afghanistan that we can't afford to be waging. That's a whole lot of money being flushed down the toilet, so to speak.

Am considering booting both of them out the door for good in order for me to survive! LOL

(Am posting this anonymously because if I identified myself my wife would be the one booting me out of the house.)

People splurging on "pet luxuries" are idiots that deserve to be broke. But thank God we live in a country where they are free to be idiots who splurge on pet luxuries.

My cats appreciate luxuries (toys, bedding, etc.) more than my spouse, so I'd cut out my spouse's.

I am one of those idiots. I love my pets and my spouse. When I can longer afford to spoil them, We will then regroup together

People who let big business run there lives the way we do deserve to be broke.
What if we all stopped driving except when we have to?
The price of gas would come down.
What if we protest at the grocery store because these stores are jacking us for everything we have.
What if we threw all the politicians out of washington.
We would be better off.
What if we spent our stimulus money on america ,in stead of letting big business spend it in china.
I dont spend big money on my pets but ,No i wont cut back on something as small as a kitten for what the well to do have put on average working america.
So fill your car and forget everything else spend your money on yourself and you are an idiot , not me.

My wife and I would sacrifice the luxuries first. Our Golden gives us much more pleasure than anything we might get and deserves the extras.

pet luxuries would go first. i've actually started buying cheaper food for them. Science Diet is great food, but Iams will keep them fed for now. when things turn around, i'll definately go back to Science Diet.

As for toys, our cats don't really play with toys. they are content to play with the ring from around the top of the milk jug or a crumpled up piece of paper. the dog has her kong toys that were a slight investment, but they haven't worn out yet. i will continue to buy her chewy bones from sam's club. they keep her occupied when we have company.

for the hubby? well, he can start packing his own lunch instead of eating out every day & we eat at home alot more now than we used to. we no longer "window shop" because that leads to actual spending. not window shopping also saves on gas LOL

Spouses

I would be cutting both, since my pet is my spouse.

We have already cut our budget and never had many luxuries anyway.

What luxuries? we don't have any at all....by the time we pay for health insurance every week, we've got nothing left.

I love both of mine I will do with out first

Hands down the spouse. I have a 3 year-old mix and a 4 month-old black lab pup. My dogs get treats and are used as a training tool so we can't get rid of those. The occasional $5 toy for them makes them happy. I actually found where Dollar General had the loofa dog toys (the long toys with squeakers inside shaped like a dog) for $2 compared to the $5 they want at pet smart. Also compare prices at Tractor Supply Company. I found that they carry dog food and it's cheaper than pet smart. The pup's teething right now too so if I spend a little more during this process, we will save in the long run.

My kitty deserves that very best!

I am too self involved to have either of these things. If I had a pet it would die and if I had a souse well she would not stay very long. This way I get all the luxuries, like electricity and water, all to myself.

No brainer - spouse's luxuries would be cut. The dog is totally dependent on his owners and gives unconditional love 24/7. Find me a spouse that fits that description and I'll reconsider. My dog has 5 beds and if I thought he needed another one, he'd have it tomorrow.

If you had a souse?
Is it 1,2,3, or 4?
1. To plunge into a liquid.
2. To make soaking wet; drench.
3. To steep in a mixture, as in pickling.
4. Slang To make intoxicated.

Pets don't have luxuries, they have necessities. They need to go to the local Pet Salon for their monthly bath, haircut/style and peticure. So I say, cut the spouses luxuries, and feed the dog and cat! cj

I would never take anything away from my pets!! They are my four legged children that depend on me!! And yes I buy my little guy clothes..and beds and toys and treats and anything else I think he would like. So guess I am an idiot too LOL..oh well

Unfortunately my spouse left and my pets have no "luxuries" to begin with, nor do I. At my home we cut the household budget on EVERYTHING, because we struggle just to keep our heads above water. So if we have to cut the household budget even more, some necessary items will become luxuries, I suppose, as I have a stressful job but only make minimum wage, which JUST ISN'T ENOUGH for a single mother of 2. But I'm just pleased to be employed at this point.
