Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigated In New Castle

Location: Route 13 southbound, south of Wilmington Avenue, New Castle, Delaware, New Castle County

Date of Occurrence: Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at 11:30 p.m.

Vehicle: 2000 Nissan Maxima, operated by a 50-year-old Middletown, Delaware man

Resume: Investigators from the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are probing a fatal pedestrian related crash which occurred at about 11:30 p.m. last night.

A Nissan Maxima was traveling in the left lane on Route 13 southbound in the area of Wilmington Avenue. A female pedestrian was walking from the west side of Route 13 toward the east and attempting to get to the center median. This was not in the area of a marked crosswalk.

The pedestrian walked into the path of the Nissan resulting in the impact. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the Nissan was not injured. He was wearing his seatbelt.

It was noted that the pedestrian was walking with another female who was not injured in this incident.

Alcohol impairment is believed to be a factor in this crash on the part of the pedestrian.

The names of those involved will be released later today or tomorrow.

This crash remains under investigation.
