After Mass. defeat, Democrats eye pared-down version of reform legislation
WASHINGTON - Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that she lacks the votes to quickly move the Senate's sweeping health overhaul bill through the House, a potentially devastating blow to President Barack Obama's signature issue.
Pelosi, D-Calif., made the comment to reporters after House Democrats held a closed-door meeting at which participants vented frustration with the Senate's massive version of the legislation.
Her concession meant there was little hope for a White House-backed plan to quickly push the Senate-approved health bill through the House, followed by a separate measure making changes sought by House members, such as easing the Senate's tax on higher-cost health plans. Such an approach would be "problematic," she said, though Democrats haven't completely ruled out pursuing it.

How long have they been working on this and once again, nothing accomplished!
If they (the entire congress) wanted to really do something about healthcare, they would have started out by putting more regulations on health insurance companies!
This was a pipe dream and a distraction from day ONE!
The Democrats AND the Republicans knew from the start this wasn't going to happen.
So, the question is, what exactly HAVE they accomplished??
A lot of people keep asking that question about the President's first year in office but they don't seem to be asking the same question of Congress?!
I, like many are just fed up with the ENTIRE bunch!
Actually, this bill is far from dead- Look at the context of the quote, she is referring to them passing the senates version outright in the immediate sense.
Also remember folks- the new Jr. Senator voted in favor of the Massachusetts version of health care reform and in the state senate was instrumental in making sure it covered everyone in his state.
He's already said today that he looks forward to working with his colleagues from across the isle- The Bush administration would have killed for the majority held by the current administration and we are far from seeing the end of the current session.
