COUNTY EXECUTIVE & MAYOR NOMINATE CHARLES R. DASHIELL, JR. TO HEAD COUNTY-CITY PLANNING & ZONING COMMISSION

Wicomico County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr., and Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr., have nominated Charles R. “Chip” Dashiell, Jr., Esq. to serve as the Chair of the Wicomico County/City of Salisbury Planning & Zoning Commission. Mr. Dashiell would succeed Corinne LesCallette as Commission Chair. Ms. LesCallette has served on the Commission since 1978 and has been the Chair since 1983. Ms. LesCallette recently informed officials of her intention to step down after more than 3 decades of service.

In a joint statement, Executive Pollitt and Mayor Ireton said, “We salute Corinne LesCallette for her remarkable record of service to the people of Salisbury and Wicomico County. Her career on our Planning Commission exemplifies the highest standard of civic responsibility. We are indeed fortunate to have a person of Mr. Dashiell’s caliber to succeed Ms. LesCallette as the leader of this important commission.”

Mr. Dashiell, the president of the law firm of Hearne & Bailey, P.A., has a long history of public service in Wicomico County. He served as the Vice President of the Wicomico County Council from 2002-to2006. He is the current chair of the Greater Salisbury Committee and a past president of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Dashiell has served on the boards of the Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Service, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, Wor-Wic Community College Foundation and the Blood Bank of Delmarva.

Wicomico County and the City of Salisbury have cooperatively engaged in joint planning activities since 1943. The Wicomico County/City of Salisbury Planning & Zoning Commission oversees the preparation of the Long Range Comprehensive Plan for the county and the city. The Commission is also responsible for review and approval of development proposals as provided by the county and city codes.

Mr. Dashiell’s appointment is subject to the approval of the Wicomico County Council and the Salisbury City Council.

Regardless of his political affiliation, Chip is a stand up guy, a gentleman and has always worked hard for the betterment of Salisbury. jackkcharl@aol.com

Jack, I agree with your sentiments, but Mr. Dashiell is a Democrat and votes strictly down party lines. Being a nice guy is one thing, but making irrational decisions because your party expects it is another.

A safe choice for the power elite of Wicomico County -- C of C and Greater Salisbury Crowd. "Chip" will do their bidding without complaint or any question just as he did on the Council for 4 years.

At least there will be "harmony".

What a shame that Pollitt and Ireton are not using this point in time to promote the split into separate Planning and Zoning authorities for the County and the City of Salisbury. The notion of someone who lives outside the City voting on development matters in Salisbury is absurd. If Fruitland has its own P & Z Commission, so should Salisbury.

7:25 It is very unfortunate that Rick and Jim didn't separate the P & Z Commission. I have no problem with Chip however, this commission has needed to be separated for a very long time and at least Rick knew this. What happened?

And they should at the same time remove Comegys from that body because of his attitude that all growth and development should be inside the City of Salisbury.

Salisbury has already been ruined by the past "planning and zoning" so it makes little difference who runs things, except to developers.

7:41-

Pollitt clears zoning matters, including this appointment, with the Greater Salisbury Committee and was told to forget about splitting to have a separate body for the County because it's so much easier for the GSC gang to control things with the single Commission.

Wasn't it that Commission that recommended the TIF deal for the old mall, and also the planned rezoning of that land that was later struck down in Court? Maybe it should be dissolved rather than split up.

Agreed. Salisbarrie now looks like the place where I grew up on the Western Shore, beautiful Glen Burnie!

Three words describes this selection: Good Ole Boys!

Who's next? Is there an uncle or cousin? Democrat of course.

Another from the good ole boys network. Same ole same ole

9:30pm No...it's 4 words:
Good Ole Boys, again!

Nice man, but showed no leadership or understanding of issue on county council. He was the one who said "all of us" (council) should be recalled. Honorable thing would have been to turn down the appointment.

Oops! Just re-read the announcement where it says "subject to the CC & City Council's approval." Why would Jim and Rick put those elected officials in a position to be forced to vote for Chip or look like they are against him in public? This is not what I believed the appointments to the boards have been done in the past. When has a press release been sent out before the councils voted on the person nonimated? What is this all about?

I'm a proud Republican, but the instant classification and assumptions of Chip, because he's a Dem, are uncalled for. He is one of the most kind, honest, unselfish, hardworking people in the county. Joe, when you allow such slander, you really lower your class even more. Want to be respected? Post the press release, get the facts, make a valid argument.

It's very clear who runs things right here in river city:

"He is the current chair of the Greater Salisbury Committee and a past president of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce."

Fee, fie, foe, fum,
I smell the hand of
Henry Parker, Phillip Tilghman, Tony Sarbanes and the Greater Salisbury Committee.

We need what happened in Massachusetts on Tuesday.

Mr. Richards:

Please tell us: "a stand-up guy" for what? Maybe it's easier to tell from Florida than here.

And please don't mention his term on the County Council because that's no secret as a disaster.

This is another reminder that the local political power structure has not changed.

When's the next election?

If they split the job, you people would be complaining about inflating government, more $$$ and people, etc. You whine when they don't cut positions and you whine when they don't add positions. Make up your minds! Or... maybe, just maybe, noone can do anything to please you and you would just rather complain!

7:48 I lived in Salisbury for 40 some years and worked with Chip on several occasions. We were in the Jaycees, I served on the board of the Chamber of Commerce and ran the Salisbury Festival for 3 years and always found Chip to be there when needed.
