Mike Pence To Challenge Bayh For Senate?

U.S. Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana is giving an ear to colleagues who are encouraging him to challenge Sen. Evan Bayh this year.

”I'm willing to hear them out,” the Republican Pence said Wednesday as the hallways of the Capitol buzzed with the implications of the Senate race in Massachusetts.

Republican state Sen. Scott Brown won the special election Tuesday to fill the seat that had been held by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy in the heavily Democratic state, prompting Democrats to debate what went wrong and what it means for this year's congressional elections.

Democrat Bayh, who is seeking a third term this fall, told ABC News on Tuesday that moderates and independents don't believe that Democrats' proposals would solve their problems and “that's something that has to be corrected.”

Pence said the Senate race didn't tell him anything he hasn't already known since he started getting huge crowds at his town hall meetings a year ago.

“I think millions of Americans have had it with runaway federal spending and with the deficits and debts and takeovers and bailouts,” Pence said. “I've had colleagues talking to me since some of the news accounts (on Massachusetts). We've been hearing kind comments from people around the state and received some encouragement from others.”

Pence declined to elaborate on his conversations with the campaign arm of Senate Republicans.
