Accident On Rt. 50 This Morning

"Hi Joe,

On my way into work this morning(7:30ish), I came upon an accident on Rt 50 next the post office. Someone was covered with a sheet in the middle of the road. I am hoping it wasn't a student crossing the road that was struck. I couldn't tell the height or sex of the victim."

I've had a number of them jump out in front of me - almost daring me to hit them as they crossed. I feel bad for the family of the victim - and the driver...but there are crosswalks with lights and crossing guards nearby - shouldn't charge the driver as that person already has enough of a burden.

It was a middle school student, she ran out in front of the car, she is ok, her leg is alittle tore up. And the driver was going the speed limit!

They love to walk slowly, on purpose, just to try and upset you. It is very frustrating, especially when there are traffic lights one block to the east and to the west. Of course, I dont know if this was an example of slow movement on the students part. Hopefully she is fine, and the driver is as well.

Kids do stupid things. This is nothing new. They are learning. A child is going to die someday just trying to go to school. This is extremely dangerous every single morning. Can we have some type of police presence ever so often? School patrols? Crossing Guards?? Anything??

Let me guess...its not in the budget.

Parents.

Don't blame the parents. These children are old enough to take responsibility for their actions. I pick up my child at Bennett Junior and they will walk right out in front of the car and look u straight in the eye and defy you to hit them.

They do have crossing guards. Some students choose to not use them.

There are crossing guards... unfortunately middle school kids dont think these things can ever happen to them and they dont utilize the street corners where these crossing guards are located. This is a prime example of a kid who was running a little late for school, probably in a hurry and thought she was untouchable! It is the responsibility of all the adults to be cautious about these kids running in front of them. The poor driver of the car was not at fault and unfortunately this may haunt him for a while!

I have a middle schooler and a high schooler, even after the horrible thing that happened to Sara they still beg me weekly to go hang out at the mall... they don't get it, they don't think these things can EVER happen to them.

How about...accidents happen. They happen to adults just as much as children.

Have you never dropped something in your car and looked down, or have something rolled from the backseat underneath your foot? - this could cause an accident, even to a very safe driver.

I am glad that the student is okay, for everyone's sake. it may open the childrens' eyes that cars cannot always stop in time.

I've come across many kids that just dare you to hit them over there. Situations where you just want to get out of the car & smack them. What happened to "look both ways before you cross the street"? Like Anon 11:21...parents!!

TO 11:01 There are crossing guards 1 block over and a stop light
They do this intentionally as mentioned earlier it's like they taunt you - and then it's like it's my road
why have cross guards and a light
move guards to this intersection - another gripe is parents piling into Wi Middle to drop kids off - why not use the side street or the bread lot instead of backing up traffic
oh I forgot "it's all about the children"

the driver should have backed up to see what they had hit...

Their is crossing guards posted but the kids do intentionally go a different route. Yes these kids come from a questionable neighborhood anyway and don't get much supervision from their welfare recipient parents that just had kids for the, as quoted personally to me, "Uncle Sam money". These kids are victims, not of society but of parents that don't give a sh!t about them.

I go through there every morning. There's always at least one crossing guard at the Ward St. intersection. It seems like most of the kids just don't use the crossing guard. A good percentage of the drivers are driving like maniacs through there on a daily basis as well. I wonder if the police have ever given out j-walking tickets to the kids in that area? Maybe once the parents had to pay the tickets, they would make sure the kids cross in the right place.

There is a crossing guard. All the students have to do is walk one block up and cross with a crossing guard. But I guess that would take to much time and energy! It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Start issuing jaywalking citations.

I drive though there everymorning too and I did happen to see they young girl lying on the road.. Yesterday I watched a police cruiser slamm his breaks on not to hit the children jay walking... maybe if he gave them a ticket this wouldnt of happened today

When these students get into college they have the same atitude "it is my street" and dare to be hit. There is a crossing line, a bright yellow pole with llights on it and buttons to push to let drivers know they need to cross. BUT these sudents will cross without looking, without pushing the button they are daring a driver to hit them. They should know this will HURT? The older they are the less common sence they have.

J Walking Tickets are the solution. Maybe they can set up a camera. Everyone has J Walked at one time or another. It is just too dangerous! A child will die. STOP POINTING THE FINGER AND COME UP WITH A SOLUTION.

JUST STOP! I AM SICK OF THESE COMMENTS THAT MENTION THE KIDS ARE WANTING TO GET HIT BE A CAR.

GROW UP!! WHAT GOOD IS THIS DOING???

What is really sad, is that the parents will probably want to sue the driver even though it was the young person's fault.

anonymous 3:40, YOU TELL EM JR!

Not sure its lawful to give a citation to someone under a certain age... I know there is leo's on here that could answer that one!

12:17---- I agree....shuda backed up.

JR? I thought her name was Kelly?

3:40 stop with the CAPS. What I think most people are saying is they arrogantly walk in front of you knowing you have to stop for them regardless if they are J-walking or not. It is everyday on that stretch of highway before and after school. Trust me that they are not in any hurry to get out of your way.

I would never let my kids cross route 50 on their own... another tradegy that any self-respecting parent could have prevented.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure all of you that commented on the victim's socioeconomic status and/or suggested that the parent's are dependant upon "Uncle Sam's money" recently donated food, clothes, or shelter to ANY family recently.(UNLIKELY!) So unless you can be of any beneficial assistance.....refrain from being so prejudice~

yea, well lets just stop and think about the neighborhood they are leaving, to cross rt. 50, on their way to school. it's ignorance breeding ignorance.

8:09 Benefical Assistance is everytime I get paided and ss as well as taxes are taken from my check. I wonder if I will ever get to collect ss money when I retire after years of it being used to support nonworkers and the children they claim have disablities.

Just so you are aware...the kids in that area HAVE to walk to school. The county provides no bus service from Rt 13 in the Decatur Ave area all the way to WiHi and Wi Middle...never has. So..unless the county is instructing and guiding these students-some that are only 11 yrs old-what the proper way to walk is...some of that responsibility lays with them. Its not 1980 around here anymore...

yep is pretty annoying when they walk in front of u on purpose maybe that's why he hit her? whoever it was should get put in jail for manslaughter

Anonymous said...

ok so yes the kids are not taught enough respect anymore. But how do you people turn a horrible accident into a racial and class slurring? And for your information from what I've witnessed in my life the kids of rich people are a lot less respectful to everyone then those that have to use welfare. And if the school won't spend the money on transportation for them then they should take the time to educate them about the rules and get the fines if the kids are caught breaking them.

This talk just disgusts me. A year ago I was a well off business owner, now I am one of "those" people and I never dreamed I would be. Thanks to the economy I lost everything and used all my saving and personal money to pay off the business debt so now I'm screwed. Does that make my children bad? Does that make me bad? If my child makes a mistake and gets struck will you say he or she deserved it because Uncle Sam has to help me. Your ignorance is disgusting. Quit being an a$$ and complaining and create jobs! Then you can talk.
