Just heard some rather disturbing news this evening. Jessica Workman, age 20, passed away from complications from MRSA. Apparently she did not know she had MRSA and was just hospitalized earlier this week. Prior to this she has been a waitress/hostess at Delmar Pizza. In Jessicas case it was a bacteria in her blood and it caused her kidneys and brain to shut down.. but she was fine last week.. even this previous Monday."
What is MRSA?
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium that causes infections in different parts of the body. It's tougher to treat than most strains of staphylococcus aureus -- or staph -- because it's resistant to some commonly used antibiotics.
The symptoms of MRSA depend on where you're infected. Most often, it causes mild infections on the skin, causing pimples or boils. But it can also cause more serious skin infections or infect surgical wounds, the bloodstream, the lungs, or the urinary tract.
Though most MRSA infections aren't serious, some can be life-threatening. Many public health experts are alarmed by the spread of tough strains of MRSA. Because it's hard to treat, MRSA is sometimes called a "super bug."

So sorry to hear about that. We were just in there last week eating lunch. 2 of the waitresses working that day were pregnant. 20 is so young to die. Prayers go out to the family.
A guy I know also has MRSA.... It has been quiet lately but is it making a return??

Yeah it's contagious but the severity depends on the type. Look it up.

I spoke to a Doctor friend of mine this evening about it and he said he's around it at least 4 times a year and he, (nor his Staff) have ever contrated it.
It's very likely it's more of a wives tale.

I heard that she was found unresponsive and rushed to hospital Tuesday. They thought she had a drug over dose but results showed there was no drugs in system but that there was a bad infection in her blood that caused her brain to completely shut down.
What ashame!

So very sad to leave at such a young age. My deepest condolences to her family.
May God bless her and keep her safe now, how terrible a loss. My prayers are for strength and solace to her family.

A 2007 report in Emerging Infectious Diseases, a publication of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), estimated the number of MRSA infections in hospitals doubled nationwide, from approximately 127,000 in 1999 to 278,000 in 2005, while at the same time annual deaths increased from 11,000 to more than 17,000.
MRSA infections occur mostly in hospitals and healthcare facilities, with a higher incident rate in nursing homes or long-term care facilities. Healthcare provider to patient transfer is common, especially when healthcare providers move from patient to patient without performing necessary handwashing techniques between patients. However, it should be noted that MRSA can cause infections outside of hospitals as well.

A 48 year old friend of mine was diagnosed with MRSA 3 years ago. He went to the DR with a bump in his groin. They rushed him to surgery that day and he had two more the next 2 days. He was rushed to University of MD for treatment, and was on dialysis for a week. Today he is on diability due to the numerous complications, has no endurance and has very limited activity. All because of a pimple on his groin that was MRSA

I caught it working in the hospital. It's highly contagious and it spread to my whole family.
My husband got it last April and has been hit with over 10 breakouts and spent 10hours in the hospital on iv's.We were waiting in our Drs office to be seen when he said he might pass out, I left immediately and took him to the er. He just remembers that he thought his life was over he was in so much pain, and barely remembers the incident. He would get another "boil" 2 weeks after finishing 15 days of antibiotics. Tea Tree Oil and antibiotics helped, finally we went to another infectious disease doctor in Southern Md and he put him on two antibiotics for 4 weeks. He was very cautious and always had his lesions covered and we sprayed lysol spray continously throughout our house, especially the shower and sink. He also used paper towels to dry his hands and changed his towel and washcloth daily. We are crossing our fingers it is finally gone. My heart weeps for this young girls family. I do believe that MRSA is quickly becomming an epedemic in our area. I hear of several people each day that is or has been affected with it. cj

My husband just had knee replacement surgery and his doctor requested a MRSA test (swabbed his nose) a few days prior to surgery. He does this with all his patients before surgery. Apparently there is a lot more of the MRSA virus around than most people realize. A family member had it last year and had to have surgery to remove a sore (and surrounding tissues) that resembled a boil. The whole family was treated as a precaution.
Jessica was an awesome friend, daughter of Tammy Sautter-Broadhurst . Jessica was a bubbly friend to all and everyone loved her. Her family is in our prayers. What a tragidy. The family is asking for help with the funeral expense once they are made. Keep her family in your prayers , they need it to get through this horrible time in their life with such a sudden loss to a beutiful life.

Such A beautiful young woman, Age 20 is way to early to pass. I will continue to pray for her family to get them through this tragic time.
It saddens me that at one moment, someone can be taken away so quickly.
I hope that someone will carry on Jessica's spirit, by talking to everyone about MRSA, it would be a wonderful outreach program so people will be aware of MRSA. I just learned about it yesturday and I am only 29, to me that is way to late. I had always heard about it but never knew really what it was or how deadly it could be.

We will see an increase in the number of resistant bacteria if we do not stop over-/misusing antibiotics. Stop buying the antibacterial soaps and handwashes; they don't work any better than regular soap and hot water. And follow the instructions for taking antibiotics. Also doctors need to stop prescribing antibiotics for sore throats when often times it is a viral infection.
Shouldnt all the (workers) at Delmar Pizza be checked?

Norway has successfully decreased the number of MRSA infections just by limiting the number of prescriptions for antibiotics. We've become so reliant on antibiotics in this country- not letting our bodies do what they're made to do.
We think we're so advanced medically, but there are countries out there that have progressive healthcare policies and better outcomes all around.
I'm sure the employees will all be tested.
Please don't trash this restaurant again for something that is totally beyond their control!

I just want to thank everyone for there support. You guys are helping us get through this very hard time. Jessica's obituarie is posted on bounds funeral homes's website and will be in the paper tomorrow. Her memorial service place and time is in there.

My mother caught this nasty bug in her gut after surgery at a certain hospital,and because she was already weak from terminal cancer,the infection killed her.My prayers to you Chris and your entire family.

Jess Lived with me about 2 years ago we went through some things but she was always a great person and friend when I needed her most....I regret not talking to her for all this time RIP Jess and may god bless your family.... I will always remember the times we had and road trips we went on...we will always have 512 King St....
