As a Catholic I believe deciding between life & death is God's business, not mine. As a mother of six, who is weary of fighting our "culture" for my children's well-being, I'm praying for the grace to not cheer should the death penalty be restored.
Definitely. There was a letter to the editor in the DT today where someone suggest he go to the mortuary where her body is being autopsied and then attend the funeral. Then maybe he'd have a different outlook on things.

I think he should, but the current status is regarded as 'middle ground', and I think it would be a waste of time politically to pursue. Right now, Maryland DOES have the death penalty, but "only in capital cases with biological or DNA evidence of guilt, a videotaped confession, or a videotape linking the defendant to a homicide".

What the previous commenter said about O'Malley visiting Sarah's body is absolutely correct. A judge in Salisbury used to fine teenage driver's one night in the Emergency Room to let them see how the results of their actions could end up. He correctly assessed the situation that it would probably be the parents that paid the fine anyway. There is nothing like a hard dose of reality to wake somebody up. For the incorrigible sex offender, the death penalty is appropriate to protect society from them.

No need for the death penalty just put the sex offenders in general population and let the internal 'criminal justice' system take care of them. In prison they are the lowest form of life there is and they most certainly will see to the proper treatment these scum deserve, no more protective custody or special treatment in jail.
Yes Maryland should use the death penalty. When these lowlifes commit these heinous acts they forfeit their right to life. I have a 2 and a 4 year old and would willingly be the switch man, and I would sleep like a baby at night. You mess with my kids you mess with my life.

Yes. Leave the death penality in effect for maryland. Prison is too good for those individuals who commit horific crimes. They need to be put to death so they don't get out of prison and do the same thing to another innocent human being. Put them to death!!!

I agree hole heartedly with the DEATH penalty. Majority of these comments are insinuating only on the Child Abuse cases. I say on any murder or a crime that leads to disability also. Expand as evidence would justify such as the three strike law. Anyone who can only cope with life by committing crimes and being incarcerated needs to be put to death. Imagine the drop in crime and the drop in States budget. Which should mean drop in taxes.
I think the media should put the Governor, as well as all Maryland elected officals, on the hot seat and ask them directly what their stance is on the death penalty in light of little Sarah's death.

No to death penalty, YES to life without parole. AND, if the sentence is for 10 years they should serve 10 years. Period.
I have heard it costs more for a prisoner if they are on death row because of the cost of the appeals and such. I do like the idea of putting them in with all the other prisoners and let them take their chances there.
Let me preface my remarks by saying, first one must believe in God and the Holy Scriptures, and if so, we are shown that God approves of killing those that commit murder.

and Exodus Chapter 21, verse 12 and Chapter 22, verses 2-4.
And as a believer, I am convinced in order to maintain a safe society the death penalty is God's mandate to us.
Hopefully, Gov. O'Malley will become familiar with the referenced scripture and do the right thing in maintaining the death penalty for the citizens of the State of Maryland.

Are you nuts? That is our tax money paying for these criminals to sit on their worthless A$$ in prison. They have free meals, free health care, etc... We have kids who do not even have health care & kids who may go to bed tonight w/o eating dinner. The prison system is OVER populated. These a$$holes should be put to death, they should not be allowed to commit these crimes & live to tell!

I saw this cheesy horror movie with redneck zombies where they skinned a dude,alive and lowered him slowly into a bubbling vat of hot oil.Since we cant do anything cruel and unusual like that,then I am all for whatever death penalty the state deems "humane" for these bastards.I cant even afford health insurance but these ingrates get medical and dental treatment free until they die.Unless another prisoner gets them or they get a disease,they will live to a ripe old age inside prison walls.Bring back the death penalty!

I have to agree with utilizing the death penalty. As a mother who is surviving the attempted murder of my daughter a year ago in the Booth street apartments. I think and always will feel that you take a life in a criminal manner, you lose your life. My daughter's life is over, she is comotose will never regain anything,unfortunately she is breathing on her own but that is all she is doing. eventually her organs will give way, her body will reject the feeding tube and she will however be in internal life. One person suggested public hangings. I'm all for it. It would be cheap and would probably deter dirt bags. But, they just need to serve the punishment swiftly. None of this sitting on death row for 20freaken years. When they are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt they hang by the neck until dead within the month.

This not an emotionally charged consideration to solve. A purely mathematical one. Rapists, child molesters, sex offenders, attackers of elderly people, - once convicted beyond any doubt, they cost the law abiding, taxpaying citizens in the millions of dollars to house, feed, & maintain. The mathematical & just means to fix this problem, along with recycling - destroy them. Not totally, mind you. They could then be used as shark food for oceanic & marine studies. See, they could serve a useful purpose. Plenty of sharks and other predators that need food. Hey - wait. How about just loading them on to a boat with experienced fishermen, slashing them just a couple of times, tie a rope around their ankles, and using them as live bait? Fish food. Sure. See? All useful, and great for the sportfishing industry. And the idea of them being eaten alive by a carnivorous fish or the like means no taxpayer monies spent on cleanup or waste removal. And also, the fishermen would volunteer to take them on a deep sea trip - for free. I'm sure.
