Another Business In Salisbury Goes Belly Up

This Universal Gas Station next to the Thrift Inn has closed their doors along with one or two others in Salisbury. Maybe its time for Mayor Ireton to come back full time and concentrate on salvaging what's left in Salisbury?

How is this the Mayor's fault?

That place was a rat hole anyway. Glad to get rid of it. It should be torn down along with the Thrift.

You guys were just cheering the other week for this place to close!

It's not the mayors fault the owners went bankrupt. As much as I like to point the finger at the governmental screwups in Salisbury, this one doesn't fall on their shoulders.

No great loss. The place was a hang out for drug dealers and hookers.

people didn't want to visit that drug and whore infested place anyway... i got a call from a good friends mom who had broken down and coasted into the parking lot (she's 81) when she asked for help they told her she would be best off to get back in her car and lock the doors while she waited for help it was not a sfe place! "The owners" told her that! That speakes volumes in my book

The mayor is not full time?

I quess the owners will have to use a RETURN VISA now.

Those were the gas stations that used to have the lowest prices in town!

Then, all of a sudden, they jacked the prices way up, and were the highest priced gas in town!

Best way to lose business is to alienate your customer base.

Put them in touch with Bubba Comegys -- didn't his gas station go bankrupt?

Joe:

Comegys gas place went belly-up and now he (not Ireton) is running the City!

Go figure.

Its an illusion that someone new is running the city, just an illusion.

The city still gets taxes from it, open or not.
Somebody will resurrect this always-dismal looking place.
It's a high-traffic area. Vehicle ingress and egress could be better, but that can be partly overcome. They'll probably have to beef up the security features of the place, as it's a high five-fingered-discount area, too, not to mention one where armed robbery is a constant threat. Sounds like a great business opportunity.

anonymous 11:04, from what I have been told recently by a Council Member from another local City, if the business went bankrupt, they, (meaning the City of Salisbury) cannot collect the property taxes until the property is re purchased. That being said, do tell us how long the Shell gas station across the street has been empty without taxes being paid!!!!!!!

We live in a free enterprise society ( for now at least)...those places are dumps and should have gone under...the marketplace decides...not the mayor

This place looked nice and did a brisk business when it first opened. Things weren't quite so funky on that part of town yet. Then it changed hands and the new owners didn't put much into it to either maintain or improve it, which followed the trend of the whole neighborhood. This wasn't good for the tenant. It's an old, old story, near the top of the "Why Your Business Is Going to Fail" list.
The owner has a choice now:
-improve and rent
-don't improve and rent (or don't)
-sell during a depression
Wonder which one he'll choose.

Maybe Comegys can get Pick to get Chambers to get Stamm to find some federal grant money for the city to buy it and fix it up as a bus station.

Anonymous said...

Gee Joe, why don't you fix it? You always seem to have all the answers.

anonymous 11:38, I resolve more issues with this Blog than ANY politician you know. Enough said.

I stopped buying gas at these stations years ago as the owners were most unfriendly and the gas seemed to not fill my tank up as much as it should have.

Sorry but I agree.

No great loss.

But why not do something to restore these Drug Infested neighborhoods. Or perhaps the closing of these stations will help. Don't see how they were helping.

The local Police Station on Church St should be reopened.

That store was whore central...I'm glad to see it go...I can't believe people stopped there to get gas with all the hookers and customers..(not store)around.

Anonymous said...

I don't believe this is a local issue. Universal Stations everywhere have been closing their doors.

Shut down the thrift travel inn and the other 1 just north of that on the s/b side and it might have a chance. Those inns (businesses)are the fall down for that area. Thank you mayor. You know whats going on and doing nothing about it so yes, it is your fault too!

Vintage Beer and Wine on Snow Hill Rd. used to be a great place for all of your adult beverage needs until it was turned into a Universal station. Now...Closed.

the city is better off without it! what an eyesore. and the last time I stopped there to get gas, the whole place smelled like body funk!

Anonymous said...

This place has been closed for a while now, not just recently....

Joe,
Are the business owner and property owner the same? If it's the tenant that went bankrupt, it doesn't mean that the city won't get taxes, just if the property owner does. Did the property owner file for bankruptcy protection?

does anyone know whats going on at the little church on vine street cops have been there since 5 am

joealbero said...

anonymous 1:59, that's a good question. However, usually when our government makes loans to foreigners it includes the property as well. Not in all cases, mind you.

Anonymous said...

You must be kidding, thank God it closed down, that station along with several other gas stores in the local vicinity are supported by prostitution and drug dealing. No one local uses them. Close them out and just maybe the prostitutes and dealers will move on to another area that will service their needs. For surrounding neighborhoods that would be a Yea!

mommaneedswine said...

Exactly, 2:44. It's been closed for a while. They sold gas only until the tanks ran dry a few weeks ago. Aidios, I say!

These guys got exactly what they wanted. They have been keeping cash off the books and under the table for years. All these types of stores do it. They probably pay all employees off the books and cheat every gov't agency out of their respectful taxes. Then they file bankruptcy to protect their assets manipulating our government all the while they get to keep all the cash they have been nest-egging over the years.

That little church on Vine street has at least one bad actor as a pastor. Don't know which one though.

How is it that so many ppl here are well aware of the prostitution and drugs that are present in this area yet nothing seems to get done about it?

I could have sworn that one of the local kool-aid drinkers said that the shore doesnt have these kinds of problems. Think again.
