6 Firefighters Die In Smoke-Filled Elevator
Mechanical failure traps victims as they attempted to reach blaze in India
MUMBAI, India - Six firefighters died early Sunday after they were trapped in a smoke-filled elevator while trying to reach a fire in a building in India's financial capital, an official said.
The firefighters were on their way to a burning 14th floor apartment in Mumbai and apparently died from asphyxiation due to smoke, a city fire brigade official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reporters.
The elevator got stuck between two floors due to a mechanical failure, the official said, and efforts by other firefighters to rescue them failed.

Aren't you supposed to take the stairs during a fire?
Yeah that's what I was thinking. "In case of fire, Take stairs" is posted in every elevator I have ever been in
And all this time we believed we had to take the stairs because the elevators were supposed to be dangerous.
I was at the hospital one day when the alarm went off on the 3rd floor. I was in the elevator, and when the doors opened, 3 SFD firemen rushed in and hit the 3rd floor button!
it says don't use the elevators because they need to be open and ready for the fire fighters. fire fighters use them to gain quick access to the fire floor to put out the fire and or rescue victims
Sorry, 9:42, but an elevator is a death box controlled from a room susceptible to fire, and will kill you when the power goes off during one. Hope yours is a happy death!
Orson you don't have to be so mean about it. 9:42 is a SFD farmin. He doesn't know any better.
I wasn't being mean. I wished him a happy death, since it's inevitable anyway, he should be happy doing it!
here ya go orson, "firefighters can safely use elevators during fire operations on the upper floors of a building, fireground logistics are dramatically improved. Unfortunately, elevators often stall or act erratically under fire conditions, leaving firefighters in an elevator stalled between floors in substantial danger. Firefighters in an elevator that stops at a floor with considerable fire involvement may also be in immediate danger. Therefore, some fire departments forbid the use of elevators during high-rise firefighting, while others establish rules for using elevators as part of the department's standard operating procedures (SOPs)."
