Subject Charged With 5th Offense DUI Subsequent Crash Investigation

Subject Charged with 5th Offense DUI Subsequent Crash Investigation

Location: Longneck Road at Cove Drive (Mariners Cove development), Millsboro, Delaware, Sussex County

Date and Time: Saturday, September 19, 2009, at 4:23 p.m.

Suspect(s): Thomas Albanese, 48, of Lewes, Delaware

Resume: On the Saturday afternoon, Troopers were contacted by SUSCOM (State Police Dispatch Center in Sussex County) in reference to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Longneck Road and the entrance road (Cove Drive) to Mariners Cove.

As Troopers were arriving on the scene, it was learned that the driver of a 2005 Chevrolet pick up truck (which was pulling a boat trailer) involved in this crash had fled on foot. Responding officers obtained a description of this subject and began to conduct an area canvas.

While checking the Fairfield development, Troopers located the suspect in question, Thomas Albanese, hiding in a group of bushes. He was apprehended without incident and officers determined that he had been drinking and that he was in fact DUI.

In the original crash investigation, it was learned that a vehicle was stopped on Long Neck Road and was preparing to turn onto Cove Drive. Albanese approached this vehicle from behind and then attempted to pass the other vehicle on the left which resulted in the collision.

A routine computer check revealed that Albanese had four previous convictions for DUI; this offense would be his fifth. Additionally, the trailer Albanese was pulling was not registered properly and the he was driving on a suspended license. It was noted that the operator in the other vehicle was not injured.

Thomas Albanese was formally charged with the following offenses: 5th Offense DUI (felony), Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash (traffic offense), Driving while Suspended (traffic offense), Failure to Provide Information at a Collision Scene (traffic offense), Failure to Have Insurance (traffic offense), Expired Tags (traffic offense) and Improper Passing (traffic offense).

He was released on a $6,900.00 unsecured bond early this morning.

Another 1 who does not care how many charges he racks up as long as he gets out of jail. Thank you justice system for allowing this guy more chances to kill someone.

It is an attitude that rules are for other people.

If he has any assets I say the courts hit him where it hurts.Taking away his license may not work, but taking his cars and his money will.

The boat wasn't his, the truck wasn't his and the trailer wasn't his. His license had ignition interlock on it. It doesn't matter what happens to him. Since he's not in jail he is probably driving and most likely drunk - again.

He will kill someone next time but it seems like the state of DE doesn't care about that enough to toughen up the laws. I can't believe he's already on the road again.

His outboard motor basically did a can opener number on the other vehicle involved thus flipping his boat off the trailer yet he still tried to drive off.

It was the most insane thing I've ever seen.

I think this is the most terrible thing I have heard. I think we need to send Fox News to Delaware!!!! Wait until he kills someone...right?? Oh, no one was hurt~~~ I heard that on TV.

Shouldn't the person who gave him the keys to their truck knowing he wasnt allowed to drive any vehicle but his own that had the breathalizer ignition lock on it be held responsible also? I do believe it is illegal to allow a person to drive your vehicle when you know they can only drive a vehicle with the breathalizer ignition lock on it. Nothing was ever done to the enabler.
