Hal Chernoff met this morning with the Wicomico County Council to secure a proposed date of October 9, 2009 Professional Boxing Event to be held at the Shorebirds Stadium, an outdoor event with alcohol.
The Stadium can hold up to 8,000 people and considering beer can be served, this secures major sponsors to finally step up to the plate and help sponsor the event.
"We're not looking to turn away from the Civic Center," said Hal Chernoff. Prize Fight Promotions simply wants to try holding one event in which alcohol can be served.
In appreciation of Fernando Guerrero, John Cannon stated, "Team Guerrero is creating its own stimulus package for Wicomico County."
There will be a rain date set for October 10th, should there be any issues. Now, from what I have come to learn, they plan on having around 500 seats on the ground level and the ring will be somewhere near home plate in the Stadium. It will be at an angle so there will not be a bad seat in the house. I'm also told the Shorebirds will take down the net behind home plate.
I did speak with Fernando just a little while ago and he is very excited the County is so willing to work with them. Their hope is to bring a regional title fight here to Salisbury and ultimately a World Championship Event here as well.
All parties I have spoken with say that he's ready for a title fight, especially after Saturday's win against a bigger opponent. The ball is now rolling and with any luck they'll be able to pull off the event on this scheduled date but there's a lot more to this than just getting the Council's OK on it. We'll keep you posted with updates.
Oh, I'm told this will not be a Showtime or HBO event. However, it may be a Pay Per View event, time will tell.

Beer isn't served at the other fights at the Civic center?
I suggested this months ago to the stadium management.
There will probably be a lot more people drinking at this event than a Shorebirds game. I hope this is monitored very carefully. It's a shame that people think they can't enjoy something as much unless they have alcohol to pair it with.
This is good. Events should turn away from the Civic Center until such time as they repeal the archaic non drinking lease language. I hope the fight works out well for the young man.
May I ask what business is it of the County Council to grant permission to hold a sporting event at an existing sporting arena?
That isn't all that went on today at the county council. 8 million in the hole and still refusing to have meetings after business hours.
Civic Center lost the "youth" part of its name. Return to the Youth, keep alcohol free, which is what the benefactors had in mind, giving kids things to do without booze around.
Let the boozers go with high price concerts elsewhere. Be sure to have Mike's guy ready to get the drunks off the road and put the fines to good use for us. :-) Win win!
There is no money left in the county budget to run the civic center alcohol free. Allow alcohol or shut it down. Period.
I hope he doesn't fight some loser like the last fight. His competition hasn't been much lately. It's funny how the fight with the best figher and he gets a hand injury! Things that make you go hummmmm!!!
3:11 You don't get it. It's not that people can't have fun without alcohol, but it does make for a more enjoyable time. Yes, there are alcoholics who need to stay away from it, but most of us can safely have a couple beers, have a good time, and have a designated driver deliver us home. Lighten up a little. Remember, Jesus didn't turn water into root beer.

here is a thought! bulldoze the civic center and make it a high rise parking garage.Then buy the old mall and put a better facility, that for one can sell beer, get bigger n better acts. What really bugs me is the old mall site just sitting there empty and useless. We don't need more condos and stores how about an arts center.We have had 2 hockey teams offer to play here but noooo we can't sell beer. The bands that come here are a joke.Why can't this town get its head out of its butt and do something that i for one would not mind a tax increase for instead of giving breaks to developers for worthless condos town homes etc.A bigger venue would bring allot of new bussiness and positive growth that would create longer lasting jobs duh...no smallsbury would rather electe slumlord pupets
6:41...the Woodcock's granted the land to the county for a BASEBALL FIELD...so all the BS about "honoring" thier wishes was thrown out the window when a CIVIC CENTER was built there instead.
I get sick of the morality police telling the rest of us when and where we can enjoy a drink responsibly...keep your religious and moral beliefs to yourself and don't impose them on me.
My moral beliefs have noyhing to do with it. The County accepted the donation of the land with the deed restriction. Live with it!
