Fatal Crash On Us Rt. 9

Location: US 9 .75 miles east of SR 5, just east of Harbeson

Date of Occurrence: August 19th, 2009

Resume: Harbeson- On Wednesday August 19th, 2009 at 9:27 AM, State Police responded to a fatal injury crash on US Route 9, just east of SR 5. The crash involved a trash truck and a passenger vehicle.

The crash occurred when an Oldsmobile, traveling eastbound on US 9, exited the roadway for an unknown reason and collided into the trash truck on the shoulder of the roadway.

A 2007 10-wheel Blue Hen trash truck was stationary on the eastbound shoulder of US 9. The operator of the trash truck, Matthew Cooper, 42, of Millsboro, was in the driver’s seat of the stopped truck and operating the truck’s mechanical arm. While Cooper was emptying a trash container with the mechanical arm, the Oldsmobile Cutlass collided into the rear of the trash truck.

Both the operator and the front seat passenger of the Oldsmobile died upon impact. They were the only two occupants of the vehicle and they were both seatbelted. The male operator was 47-years of age and his male passenger was 52-years of age. Alcohol and drugs were not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The names of the deceased will be released once the next of kin have been notified.
