We need a new police chief. I'm not so sure about sub stations. We also need a police chief who is willing to live in the city and wear a uniform.

Give SPD the leadership, direction, manpower, funding and equipment they need. Bring back allied joint task forces, jump out squads and make sure allied agencies communicate, share intel and info, and coordinate their efforts. Initiate curfews for juveniles and start enforcing the hell out of "quality of life" statutes (loitering, open container, noise, nuisance, vice, littering, codes) to lead to other serious charges and arrests. Courts and State's Attorneys: HAMMER THE BASTARDS, DON'T NOL PROS OR PLEAD BY DEFAULT ON EVERY CASE, HAMMER THE JUVENILES AND BRING BACK BOOT CAMP. If they don't fear God, make them fear the badge!

Can Webster Now!

Just Do IT!

i would suggest buying a gun legally and practicing with it to ensure your families safety. Crime has risen over the years in Salisbury and it does not seem like things are going to change for a while. The chief needs to go, but will he, will Ireton do what is needed?

Follow the drugs.

For weeks many are saying fire the Chief as crime has increased.
I am a person with a long military background and with very little knowledge of your Chief. If your Chief is corrupt then he must go but if you think firing him will solve the crime in your area you are well mislead.

Cerfews, substations, saturation patrols in bad areas, more manpower, better neighborhood crime watch programs. More youth programs and better education.. somehow prevent the next generation of kids from becoming thugs and wannabe gangsters.

Personally, I'd like shake down every kid under 25 thats not gainfully employed or in school. Desperate times call for drastic measures.

Sack the chief, put adninstrators in the public eye, help the street cops, show them your suppoort.

Anonymous said...

Bring in the National Guard!!!! Let's see if these thugs buck them!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Yes, can Webster asap and reopen sub-stations now!

Anonymous said...

stop giving these criminals a slap on the wrist and give them time for their crime! I like sub stations, the more we can spread out the police in crime areas the better.

We can't control crime because we can't control drugs. We can't control drugs because no one in America is capable of reigning in the CIA.

I think therefore, we are in deep trouble.

Anonymous said...

Let law abiding citizens purchase guns without all these stupid laws meant to allow only criminals to have them. if criminals know most people are packing, they are less likely to bother them or attempt a crime.

First, we have to get out of the mindset that the police are the one answer to controlling or eliminating crime. For the most part, police respond to crimes that have already occurred. Police presence is a deterrent to crime, but only when the presence is consistent, and when police have the opportunity to know the neighborhoods they patrol and the people who live there.
Our problems with crime have to do with things that are way outside of the control of the police: things that have nothing to do with police. It's a social problem that plagues us: the conditions that promote crime.
Here's a short list of Salisbury's:

-Poverty, often multi-generational
-Poor education (the dropout rate in Wicomico County among the redominant minority is about 50%, and half of those who do graduate can't put a decent sentence together)
-Lack of job opportunities in the area
-Lack of solid work ethic
-Lack of appropriate male role models (the children of the locally predominant minority group have a one in five chance of having a father in the home until reaching adulthood)
-Gangs (inappropriate male role models and havens for those who lack the amenities of family life)
-High rents (causing overcrowding)
-Ineffective court system (too many of the guilty walk and there are too few creative alternate sentencing programs)
-Multi-generational entitlement attitudes
-An abundance of crime opportunities (poorly maintained and secured houses, poor lighting, lots of students on foot, etc.)

I could go on. And on.
But we cannot reasonably expect that the police department will be the sole answer to our crime problems. Police respond to crime, like a person with a flyswatter responds to flies.
Some of the problems will never, ever be successfully addressed, and crime will never, ever go away here. But there certainly could be less of it if those problems were addressed.
The down and dirty is this: Got more reasons for criminals to be here? Then we're going to have more criminals than those places with fewer reasons.

Stop wasting your time with "Click it or ticket" and get the boys selling drugs off my block! Stop wasting time with getting crackhead street hookers by the trashy motels and start getting the guys transporting crack into Salisbury.

I agree with 9:56am. These kids aren't growing up on the rough streets of Baltimore or Detroit. There are plenty of opportunities here in Salisbury to receive a good education and to prepare for a brighter future. It's just a shame that we don't hear about alot of the kids from the bad neighborhoods who are doing quite well as adults. These kids have left the area, all we're left to see are the bad ones who stick around on the block.

10:46 .. well said. I could not agree more.

In my opinion, Sub-stations are a mistake. It gives criminals a means of surveillance. The best defense is an offense. Whats needed is more patrols and less hanging out at the station.

You hit the nail right on the head-those "quality of life" offenders, the guys standing on the corner drinking beer and walking out in front of cars, are almost always carrying dope and some of them are armed.Bust them for the little stuff and viola, you have a concealed weapon or some crack, maybe even an outstanding warrant.Guys who do not work or go to school and just stand around all day are getting their money from somewhere.Think about it!
I am tired of hearing that its because of poverty,or because of a lack of opportunities among minority populations.BS!There are just as many,if not more, resources available to those kids in this area,as indicated by the kids who do make good and rise up above all the thuggery.Time for excuses to stop.

Pay the officers what they deserve, give them the cars, equipment and manpower to take it to the max

Anonymous said...

Joe someone said earlier that 8 police Officers are on the way. will in actuality 12-15 are needed and we are losing Officers because of crappy pay and low morale. So its a water pale with a hole in the bottom, it keeps leaking. Mayor and City Council fix the leak, give them the pay raises they deserve keep them paid equal to everyone else and give them the man power they need.

We did not have these problems, with Chief Dykes, Colonel Guthrie, Captain Ulm. Get rid of Chief Webster, Major Livingston, Captain Meihschien and evereyone else that was brought to the top by gratuitus ass-kissing to Webster. Start fresh clean out the administration and bring in a proven team. Lets start with the likes of Lashley, Leatherburry, Elmer Davis and who ever they choose. Once they all start wearing the uniforms instead of suits, work the streets with their officers and support the road guys, things will turn around. Force the SAO and local politicians to presure the judges to hand out harsher sentences. This should be a good start.

Substations need to be in high crime areas.

Mayor Liarton is not doing his job. He lied to us and told many of us personally that every department head will have to reapply for their jobs. That was just a ploy to tell us what we wanted to hear to get him elected. He STOLE votes from us. If he had the nads he would have gotten rid of Webster immediately for attacking him in the Daily Times during the election.

Mayor Liarton you are nothing more than an Office Girl. You should be ashamed of yourself. Mare Tilmon had bigger stones than you do.

Proactive community policing needed. This includes substations.

First people should start reporting crimes when they see them taking place instead of waiting for themselves to be the victim.

Second the City police needs to seriously overhauled because its not just the chief..its the cops as well...from the top to the bottom.

Third the City needs to help get these kids something else to do with their time without having to pay an arm and a leg for it. There was mention of a water park...that's a good idea...how about a public pool that residents could pay a SMALL fee for maintenance...etc. If we don't give these kids something to do then the only thing left for them is the streets.

Fourth some of these parents out here need to start being responsible for your child. What they are doing, Who they are hanging out with, Where are they going, When will they be back...etc

Fith we need to start drawing buisnesses here so that we can get people jobs. People are out of work and need help without going through hell to get it. What would you do for your hungry kids after weeks, months of trying to find a job all over the place. It saddens me to think that people have to steal food in this Country...It saddens me further to think that people would look down upon those that do to feed their families after seeking jobs and no one is hiring.

Sixth put the cops back where they need to be. On the streets in the very neighborhoods they are hired to protect. Perfect example....I like seeing the bike cop riding around the park when I'm their. It gives me a sense of well being for not only me, but my kids as well.

Seventh stop investing so much money in the fire department when I can count the amount of fires\major fires on one hand in the last 6 months but could count the amount of calls for service for crimes on both hands and feet.

But thats just my opinion!

Hey Joe why dont you break the news story on SPD officer getting shot at and no investigation being done by thier own department.

Sorry about last post had not read further you are already on it Good job.

Please get on with it -- we're tired of waiting for your "help".

12:45 PM - says it all. I like it.

I have not read all the comments so pardon me if this is a repeat. CRIME IN SALISBURY OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE NATION IS A DIRECT REFLECTION OF THE LENIENCY OF THE JUDICIARY SYSTEM. If the judges would just sentence the turds to what is on the books it would put crime to a halt!!!!

Anonymous said...

12:16 or Elmer Davis: I wouldn't lump you together with Lashley or Leatherbury. Tell me - why are you suspended? Those two hold honor. You hold a grudge. So much for a$$kissing Webster. That got you somewhere didn't it? Ahh, full circle it does come.

Click it or ticket brings in a lot of money. You cant' get rid of it. The money is just too easy. Soon they will ticket for cell phone use also. It is another great way to raise money, and most people can't resist the temptation to use the phone in the car.

Drugs bring in enormous profits for the rich elite in our government. We have taken over Afghanistan because of the tremendous poppy growing opportunities. The drugs cannot be curbed without the rich losing a lot of money, so don't look for it to happen any time soon.

Crime is what the rich people give to the poor people. They want us to ask for more and more draconian law enforcement and more infringement on our personal liberites. It sounds like we are all ready to give up some liberty in order to gain some "security"? How about this: You see drug dealers operating in your neighborhood? You deal with it. Imagine a bunch of citizens beating the crap out of some bandana wearing, blunt smoking, son of a gun. Power to the people.

We don't need no stinking badges.

Many areas dont even have "City" Police departments anymore, including some in Maryland.

I say, fire Webster. Give all the officers the opportunity to become deputies and let Mike Lewis take over the city jurisdictions too.

He will get the job done!!

Anonymous said...

Sub-stations are definately necessary in some neighborhoods. Without 24-7 police presence in some areas crime will NOT be controlled. I worked in downtown Baltimore and without the sub-stations in strategic areas I don't think the city would have been livable. A new Chief is definately in order.

Webster's pansy whining about two councilwomen doing their jobs for their constituents is enough for me to say FIRE HIM! He's leaking documents to that rag paper...FIRE HIM!

We need someone who cares about doing his job for the people. The man has shown he doesn't.

Fire Webster, Fire the Cpt, Maj, LT from the third floor. Demote Parisano to road patrol and never be aloowed to go up in rank to lead. Wicomico and SPD should link together under Lewis (great leader), up grade SPD equp and kick some azz on the street.

10:46 has it right. There arent any jobs, few things for young ppl to do and the rednecks in the local govt love their fireman toys. The police force is on the back burner when it should be first. I witness bad management daily at my workplace and I can tell you that the SPD isnt the only local business with horrible morale. The problem is, with most managers/chiefs around here they are probably on the "inside" with the good ol boys and the chances of something getting done around here is nill. I see it everyday at work, laziness and the local "whats in it for me" attitude. It runs rampant around here and I'm sure my workplace isnt the only one with this problem. The standard here is very low and it is a very contagious characteristic. I feel sorry for the SPD officers since I know what its like to be taken advantage of by a local employer.

I have a freind that drives a tractor trailer that tells me in cities like NY criminals use handicaped and old people pushing grocery carts to force truckers to stop so someone with bolt cutters can jump on the back, cut the lock and start throwing boxes off the back.

He told me he'd run them over first and he never stops for lights or signs in some areas.

If we could carry guns many of these criminials would move on, this is a vulerable area known for a shortage of police officers.

The common theme, once again, fire Webster. He is not corrupt, just incompetant. Substations are not needed and cost money to maintain. The idea is to empty the police stations and put every officer on the street. There is no crime in the building where so many seek refuge because they are afraid. Everyone from the top down needs to be in uniform and preventing crime. Lock the doors on the station for thirty days and see what happens.
