Black Officer At Scholar's Home Supports Arrest

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A black police officer who was at Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s home when the black Harvard scholar was arrested says he fully supports how his white fellow officer handled the situation.

Sgt. Leon Lashley says Gates was probably tired and surprised when Sgt. James Crowley demanded identification from him as officers investigated a report of a burglary. Lashley says Gates' reaction to Crowley was "a little bit stranger than it should have been."

Asked if Gates should have been arrested, Lashley said supported Crowley "100 percent."

Gates has said he was the victim of racial profiling.

President Barack Obama says the officers "acted stupidly." Lashley called Obama's remark "unfortunate" and said he should be allowed to take it back.

Gates employer needs to take a long look at him. By keeping him employed says a lot about their view of white people.

everybody seems to forget in this country racism is a one way street. a black official or figure-head in this country cannot be arrested or even questioned without the NAACP yelling foul .I can guarantee that sharpton and jackson will be all over this like white on rice (pun intended)

what the hell did you expect when he took office

I think this has been a huge eye opener for a lot of white people. I think were done apologizing !

As a mid 30's white male, if, while yelling at a police officer who asked me to step outside, said "I'll see your mama outside," I would have expected to be arrested, and charged with more than he got, by an officer of any color or gender.

This guy has a chip on his shoulder.

If anyone was a racist in this situation, it was Gates.

Gates is an avid supporter of Affirmative Action and reparations for decendants of slavery. Its all about making whitey pay for the past people, wake up.

Black, White, Green, Turquoise, who gives a damn. The man was doing his job. If the officer was wrong then he should be handled. If not then nuff said. P.S. for anybody who is judging what I said by color stereotype in 1080 pixel I'm Black.

Imagine this entire situation (with it's current update) being race-reversed.

White President saying that a Black Police officer "acted stupidly" without knowing the entire story. Simply using another white guys opinion.

Oh....it would be a long time before we ever heard the end of that one.

This should require much more than an apology....perhaps a step down. lol

Where was the public outrage about the unjust racial profiling of the Duke lacrosse players?

This administration is racially profiling every white taxpayer in the country. Reparations is the goal.

i don't care if he's piss-muckle-purple, bates was RACE BAITING! potus has been waiting for this moment. do you think POTUS didn't know that question was coming?
his 1-2-3 answer oughtta tell you that he knew. he should have said "No comment. Next question."

"No comment" should have been Obama's reply. He wasn't there. As for the black officer's comments, he wasn't there either and has no business passing judgement. Me? I wasn't there. No opinion, except that this has been blown up into a huge story and I'm tired of hearing about it.

granny,
I beleieve the black officer was there and you don't have to have been there to have an opinion. Jury's do it all the time!

Grannydragon is right. Obama should have said, no comment or I'll have to review all the facts before making a statment!
I do have an opinion, and it carries virtually NO weight, as I am a NOBODY. Thankfully, I am free to express it anyway. The racist professor is certainly free to express his view of the police response to his home, but not in a way that interferred with and racially harassed the responding officers. He got arrested, as he should have for his execrable, out of control, race baiting behavior.

The president of the nation should read the facts before voicing an opinion, as his opinion carries infinitely more weight than mine, yours or grannydragon's. Obama saying he regrets his statement means the facts as he now understands them don't support that opinion. He is all but crawling on his knees to the innocent & just police officer!

Gates is either stupid or a raging racist! Now that he has no doubt been made aware of all the circumstances leading to the police responding to ensure the safety of his life and property, if he isn't stupid or a raging racist he would admit his mistake and apologize. (HINT: I don't think Gates is stupid, so that leaves raging racist)!
If he is really the Obama's friend, he could help the president and the nation immeasurably, by doing the right thing and admitting that he misread the situation and take responsibility for his hideous,
palpably racist behavior!

I am a 30-something African American female who thinks that Crowley was absolutely right in the handling of the situation. As an officer he gave orders to present identification that could have clarified the issue right there. Instead, Gates acted as older black americans act, as if white people still owe him something. There are still some things that we have to get by as a nation but for the upper class society like Gates, you have arrived so you should have been glad to have that sort of protection in your neighborhood. It took police 15 mins to get to a shooting where a 5-year old was critically wounded in my neighborhood.

Doesn't anyone care that the "White" police officer lied in his police report which has been confirmed by the 911 caller? This proves that the "white" cop had an agenda once he saw 2 black people inside of the house. Doesn't anyone feel that Gates had a right to be in "his" house? I am ashamed that this Crowley isn't stepping up and being a man and admitting that he infringed on Gates' rights.
Signed- White Dude that knows many Brady cops
