This Just In From A Reader

On Saturday June 20, 2009 Salisbury Police Officers were called to 712 Alvin Avenue about an assault in progress. Officers witnessed Johnathon Johns attacking a man who was lying on the sidewalk. The man was George Johns, father of Johnathon, who had massive head trauma. Johnathon Johns admitted to attacking his father and made the statement "he deserved it". Johnathon Johns was arrested and taken to WCDC Central Booking. He refused to talk with the district court commissioner and was put on a temporary committment. Johnathon Johns was to be taken to district court on June 22, 2009 for an apperance before the judge.

Johnathon Johns has been charged multiple times since 1990 for violent crimes against others and found to be not compentent for his crimes. He was committed to various mental institutions for treatment each time.

George Johns is in intensive care at PRMC. I feel very sorry for him and his family. It is very hard for any father to love their children no matter what. Our prayers will be with you and your son.

The Daily Times must have missed this. Just shows the power of the internet and free speech

That's too bad; we wish George Johns a quick recovery. It's also too bad about the location. Back in the day, Alvin Ave. was one of the nicer places in town. I realize, of course, that this kind of thing can occur anywhere these days.

Crazy or not. Dosen't matter. When are they going to throw away the key? His father is in ICU!!

Alvin Ave. still is a very nice, quiet neighborhood. The son(s) has mental issues...

Can't fix stupid or crazy. Mental illness is forever and gets worse with the mind boggling drugs. The System perpetuates the syndrome. I'm very familiar with the program and a first hand witness.

With a history of violence and mental illness, why is this son not locked up somewhere for the criminally insane? Someone with a repeat history should not go free.

I will pray for the senior Mr. Johns.

It's very sad. The Johns are nice, quiet people. Unfortunately, having a mentally ill son could happen to anyone. I think Saturday was the first time anyone in the neighborhood realized they had a son who was such a problem.

And it is a nice neighborhood. Yesterday a neighbor was already mowing their lawn to help out while George is in the hospital. Let's hope he gets out of ICU soon and recovers quickly.

Good thing SPD has 8 new officers in the academy this class. They need them!

I apologize for having implied that Alvin Ave. is no longer a fine neighborhood (4:41) I know better. I realize now that I know George John (it is not Johns). He and his wife, Mary, are absolutely wonderful people. I work with them as volunteers at a local educational facility. George is a very good-natured person. I am so sorry that this happened. I do hope, of course, that he recovers quickly. I also hope that his son can get the help he needs.

Johnathon has been and out of Perkins many times. Perhaps he can bunk with the "Gyspy Queen Killer" this time. I wish that Mental Health patients could get the help they so desperatly need. The truth is that the american taxpayer gave up on the mentally ill many years ago.

Please be careful of sensationalizing this and giving George's wife more pain, unless this report came from the police or the family. It may have just been one of those sudden, horrible things that can happen when a mentally ill person is angry and out of control. George fell or was knocked to the sidewalk. That alone could account for his head injury. The officers would have to tell you whether anything happened after that, other than the son ranting. I would have to guess the family called them, because they were there almost as it happened. Very sad, but let's not make it even uglier and sadder than it is.

You cant. The courts and the mental health departments have clearly failed the parents and the kid. He cracked his skull, I know a little something about that. Fall on the side walk my a$$.

He did not fall. Sadly, his very mentally ill son beat him into a coma. He should have never been released but the system is over-crowded and the local mental health rehab facility is voluntary unless on conditional release. He was not required to be in intensive housing and he had been "out of control" for the past week. His family is loving and wonderful but the system has simply failed here. It is not new and this won't be the last sad story we hear. They should not be tossed aside and forgotten about. They need help and assurance that they are not broken....just damaged and they are still people.

This is indeed very sad. I hope that this devoted father recovers properly. What's even more sad is that he was released into the community. Suppose this had been a neighbor or a child? Thank GOD that he didn't injure the whole family.

I hope the senior Mr.Johns will recover!
His son needs to be in jail, not a hospital."Mentally incompetent" is overused as a copout for violent criminals who get released and collect SSI checks for their "mental problems" and continue to menace people.Put him away and keep him there.
