Wilmington Man Dies In ATV Accident

The photo above is not from the scene.

Location of Incident: Private residence along the 20000 block of Sapp Road in Milford, Delaware, Sussex County

Date and Time of Occurrence: Friday, May 22, 2009, at approximately 12:38 p.m.

Resume: Troopers and emergency personnel were called to the above listed residence today in reference to an ATV Crash.

This investigation revealed Michael Schifferer, 28, of North Clayton Street in Wilmington, was operating a 2006 Arctic Cat Proweler ATV (resembles a dune buggy with a roll bar). During the operation, this vehicle overturned and Mr. Schifferer struck his head on the ground, resulting in a fatal injury. He was transported from the scene to Milford Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

At the time of the crash, Mr. Schifferer was wearing a seatbelt, but not a helmet.

No charges are expected to be filed.

Well I'm glad the Masters aren't going to file any charges.

What's the last thing you hear a redneck say before he's carted off to a hospital or kills himself? "Hey everyone, watch this."

kids. If you are going to ride an atv wear a helmet

Who would they file charges on, the corps?

I am so sorry for this loss, however, whenever I do anything where a helmet is recommended...I put it on.

When your numbers up, your numbers up. Helmet or no helmet. At least he went having fun.

First of all, there is a discrepency of whether Mike was actually driving the vehicle or not. Second, the redneck joke is far from funny or cute. If you knew him, you would know he was nothing of a redneck. Just a guy who wanted to have a good time this Memorial Day weekend.

6:25 It's a "good time" until the cops show up or someone dies.

People go through life doing stupid shit because they believe nothing bad will happen to them.

An acquaintance of mine was the passenger and Mike was indeed driving the vehicle when it overturned. Even said it had never rolled before. Just a regular guy having some fun and showing off his experience on the wrong day when his luck ran out. The comment in the report about charges being filed is just procedure, but it is said the passenger actually cleared the blood from Mike's airways and kept him alive until EMT's arrived. I find that very admirable... I don't know what I would've done. The whole thing is just very unfortunate for everyone and my heart goes out to Mike's family.

What a shame. I knew Mike in Wilmington and I can say that he was a good guy and devout Eagles fan. My heart goes out to his family. Rest in peace buddy.
