Wicomico County Sheriff’s Deputy (D.F.C. Ross) Is A Hero

On April 7, 2009 at approximately 7:20 a.m. a Wicomico County Sheriff’s Deputy (D.F.C. Ross) observed smoke emanating from the roof of a residence on Chippewa Boulevard.

D.F.C. Ross exited her patrol vehicle and was immediately met by a female in the yard of the residence. The witness said an elderly subject was trapped inside the house in a rear bedroom. D.F.C. Ross radioed WCSO dispatch and requested EMS, Fire/Rescue to respond.

D.F.C. Ross was unable to make entry into the residence due to the location of the fire. Ross went to the rear of the residence and located the victim trapped inside the bedroom. D.F.C. Ross was able to make contact with the elderly subject (74 y.o.a.,Christine Long). Ross instructed Christine Long to get low to the floor and to keep calm.Dfc Ross broke out a window and attempted to extricate the victim. The house continued to fill with smoke which was now billowing out of the residence in the area where Christine Long was trapped. Upon EMS arrival D.F.C. Ross directed them to the rear of the residence where Fire Personnel made contact with Christine Long and extracted her from the residence. The elderly female was treated and transported to PRMC.

D.F.C. Ross was taken to PRMC for treatment from smoke exposure. D.F.C. Ross was treated and released. D.F.C. Ross’s actions contributed to saving the life of Christine Long.

When did the fire department finally arrive?

Anonymous said...

Yes the officer did help the woman but it was still the fire department that got her out

This Officer risked her life to save this woman, without equipment. She is a hero no matter what is said or done. She didn't leave her behind. A life was saved due to the quick response of this Sheriff's Deputy and my hat is tipped to all involved.

The officer telling her to get in the floor may have been enough to save this ladies life. Either way
great job D.F.C. Ross and the Firefighters. Bottom line quick thinking saved a life.

You are such an A-hole!!! It was a TEAM EFFORT!!! D.F.C. Ross acted selflessly without any protective bunker gear in an attempt to save the life of another human being! All involved are heros, so grow up and stop trying to one-up a law enforcement officer!!!

Great Job to all involved...

Team Work and fast thinking leads to saving lives. Absolutely a tremendous job by D.F.C. Ross and the first responders of the Fire Dept

I agree. Great Teamwork by all involved. Good for Ms. Long who will get to see the sun rise again.

Great work by all those involved in making the save. It was team effort and no one person should take all the credit. The quick actions of the deputy locating and giving instructions to stay low did save the residence life. The work of the first arriving Paramedic Unit & Tower 16's crews working together to remove the pt from her home. Credit should also should be given to other units operating on the scene who contained and extinguished the fire keeping damage as minimal as possible.

Good work Deputy Ross, you definitely saved that woman's life. If it wasn't for you calling in that fire and locating the occupant this would have have been a body recovery. Great job to everyone.

Thank you to everyone involved! It is always a team effort out there. They all have there rolls to play! Good job WCSO, EMT's, and Fire Department!

great job dep ross i know the elderly woman thanks you for your help as well as fire and ems

by the way... did you know she also pregnant.

Anonymous said...

If she is pregnant, she should not have been working as a deputy.

Also, no mention of Tower 16 & Lt. Gordy being involved in the rescue, just the deputy.

I have to be to work by 7:30 a.m.
As I was waiting for the light at Rt. 50 and Beaglin Park Drive, the tower truck was heading West on Rt.50. No sirens, no lights, I thought it was another learn to drive run.

the deputy had nothing to do with the incident other than being in the area and contacting wicomico central.i was listening to the whole situation and heard when the woman was found by the truck co.i like how this site is so inaccurate and for some reason loves mike lewis and the country sheriffs office.

Good Job to all! Regardless of rank, department, or jurisdiction. The end result is this lady is here to see another day and that is what emergency services is all about! It doesn't matter PD, FD, 911 operator, or EMS. All played a vital role in the chain of survival for this lady and ALL are to be commended for their quick work and bravery!

Sounds like some hose beater wannabe is a little jealous that a pregnant officer is more a man than he could ever hope to be...Probably could get a law enforcement job so settled for Vol Firemen to the disgust of his fellow firemen... (doth thou protest too much)... kudos to DFC Ross- Warrior Queen and defender of the helpless!!!!

It does'nt matter who saved the woman it was great that she was saved,

Well Joe even WMDT 47 can get the news right from the time or at least changed what actually happen at that fire and who pulled who out.How about the dputies that left the women laying there in front of the house dying and taking the deputy instead to the hospital. At least try and get the story right for once.

The term "hero" was used by this blog. The Daily Time correctly reported that she "assisted." The sheriff's department will use this story, especially since it involves a minority female, to counter-balance the negative story of one of its deputies getting arrested.

Breaking Window adds fresh air and draws the fire to you. Could have hurt the victim.

Anonymous said...

pregnant? what fellow deputy did that?

Anonymous said...

Anon 4:46 pm
Yes she is pregnant and was her last shift of road patrol before starting light duty. If she had not been working that particular shift, the elderly lady may have succumbed to smoke inhalation. Things happen for a reason not known to us mortals. You sound like a JEALOUS fireman who is disappointed for no recognition of your efforts, well get used to it for it is part of YOUR JOB. If you joined the fire service to garner recognition, then you joined for the wrong reasons. If you as a fireman know in your mind you done a good job and gave it your best efforts, then that is all that is required. Be happy for the outcome.

You are a pig. I am quite sure you are racist as well. Lt. Gordy? LMAO, he wouldn't make a pimple on a Lieutenants ass. Did he steal anything while he was in the residence?

A friend of mine is a vollie at Station 16 and he said the guys were pissing and moaning all day about the deputy getting all the attention and the FARMIN weren't. If you have a job to do then do it and don't expect to get attention for being a hero. If you got in that business to be a hero then you are dangerous to the citizens as well as yourself. Real firefighters don't beg for attention.

Lets all be thankful the women surived all Emgergency Service came out unharmed. The deputy did a great job, but there were other deputies there that were never mentioned. Some that went into the house to assist getting the victim out. They all did a great job they are all heroes. Who hit the beast with an ambulance. I heard an ambulance rolled into the new monster. Hmmmmmmmm guys give it rest, but Ross was not the only heroe this day. Give credit where credit is due. Great job by all. Will the fireman lose days for smacking the beast ??

You say no one in the FD should be looking to be a hero. Why should that be any different for the deputy then? The fire guys risked way more than that deputy did when they entered a burning building and pulled that lady out. NO deputy entered that house according to all on scene, including neighbors who were there for the hole thing. So then explain how the head dude at the WCSD stated on tv last night that she crawled down a hallway and made contact with the person and then rescued her when it was viewed by everyone there that the firefighters went in the window and pulled the lady out?! Even WBOC said she broke a window and rescued the lady. Read the Daily Slime today and see another version. Three stories, all different. Daily Slime most accurate, which is unusual.
I'm not a fireman and dont care to be one, but those guys are always there when you need them.
Some said there upset because they didnt get any credit. From what I hear, they werent whinning about it all day because they didnt get credit, they were upset they didnt get the TRUTH!
Bottom line is the system worked, the lady is safe, and so are all the first responders who are there for each of us everyday. Hebron deserves credit as well for there help. Instead of getting on there back, we should be praising them for there good work. I bet the family of that lady is.

For everyone involved that did not get there name in the paper here you go... Great job to everyone for helping a person see another day with her family!! You are all HEROS in my eyes! I know the Deputy and the last thing on her mind is a word like "Hero" so don't blame her for the Media!!!!! The only thing important here is the great work done by all to save another life. The media doesn't see everything the police, Fire and EMT's do everyday! Thanks again to all!!!!
