Incumbent Salisbury councilwoman Shanie Shields, by all accounts, is a nice person. That and a buck might get District 1 residents a cup of coffee at McDonald's - Shields favorite morning hangout. We think that the people of District 1 deserve better. The clear choice is Cynthia Polk.
Now infamous comments such as, "I ain't never seen no wasteful government spending" and her numerous, embarrassing statements on crime and the police show Shields to be uniquely unqualified to hold ANY public office. The scandalously low voter turnout and Shields marginal victory in the primary speaks to the apathy and despair Salisbury's District 1 residents.
Bought and paid for by some of Salisbury's most notorious slumlords four years ago, Shields has been a reliable rubber stamp for the Barrie Tilghman / Gary Comegys / SAPOA camp. She has repeatedly sold out her own constituents under orders from her apparent masters. Shields has been a steadfast proponent of the North Prong redevelopment, which will have the long-term effect of forcibly moving poor minority residents. She helped to secure a multi-million dollar developer reimbursement for Sassafras Meadows AFTER the developer reneged on a pledge to build affordable senior housing on the site.
District 1 voters have an opportunity for real representation by electing Cynthia Polk. While it is true that Polk is not a polished speaker and does not have a public record, time will certainly cure those two deficiencies. What Polk does offer is an obvious passion that will deliver representation to District 1 voters rather than representation for those who continue to oppress the people who actually do the working, living, and dying in District 1.
Polk's potential as a councilwoman is made clear by asking one simple question - Why would the city's most notorious slumlords spend untold thousands of dollars to defeat her if her priorities were not for the PEOPLE of the city rather than those who wish to keep them bound in the chains of crime, poverty and blight?

I thought Shanie said she had an associates degree? She didn't even graduate high school!
Shanie Shields did not attend Salisbury State for 2 years,does not have an Associates Degree in "Office Technology" from Wor-Wic Community College, nor did she graduate high school. Perhaps by now she has a G.E.D.
Why is Shanie Shields lying about her education? She has many degrees of the streets. She has not graduated from anywhere with any degree. Have you ever listened to her speak? She wants to be re-elected because she wants to be paid.
I believe Salisbury University and Wor-Wic Community College and Wicomico High School will verify that Shanie Shields did NOT graduate either. OMG! What else is she lying about?
Is Shanie Shields living in a fantasy world? Or is she having delusions of grandeur?
How nice was Shanie Shields being when she helped Comegys or his supporters stuff and mail those malicious and hateful letters?
