Inmate Commits Suicide


A 25 year-old-male inmate at the Wicomico County Detention Center has died of an apparent suicide. The inmate was discovered in his cell at approximately 01:50 a.m. on Monday, March 09, 2009.

Correctional Officers and medical personnel immediately began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, including the use of an Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED) device. Paramedics from Salisbury Station Two responded and the inmate was transferred to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Emergency Room where he was pronounced dead at 02:30 A.M.

The matter was immediately reported and is currently under investigation by detectives from the Wicomico County Combined Bureau of Investigation, the results of which will be forwarded to the State’s Attorneys Office for review. The inmate’s body will be transferred to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for an autopsy.

The inmate’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. More information will be available following the notification.

A Correctional Officer discovered Justin Mitchell of Parsonsburg, MD, unconscious in his cell at approximately 01:45 A.M. today. Correctional Officers and medical personnel immediately began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, including the use of an Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED) device. Paramedics from Salisbury Station Two responded and the inmate was transferred to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Emergency Room where he was pronounced dead at 02:30 A.M.

Department of Corrections officials said that a Correctional Officer on rounds had spoken briefly to Mr. Mitchell not long before he was found. Mr. Mitchell was not on suicide watch.

Mr. Mitchell has been incarcerated since February 2, 2009, on a 2nd degree assault charge and as a fugitive from the State of Delaware where he was wanted for vehicular homicide.

Only if DDD lets him back in without a "departure escort". Maybe todays escort will be for DDD.

Sounds like you would prefer to have an instant death penality for even the most minor infraction, because it would be cheaper for you. How would you feel if it was your son or brother? I doubt any different.

People are so stupid!!! An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind!!!! Yes I believe that everyone should pay for their crimes but someone dying is not funny or something that should be taken lightly. What an arrogant @ss hole. I'm sure you've never wronged anyone in your life, maybe you should do us all a favor and kill yourself!

First I think the whole damn bunch who runs that jail should be fired and they should start over. I mean everyone starting with ddd all the way down to foreman. Secondly on the death penalty issue, I believe that we should exercise the death penalty more often and faster. this will decrease crime. As far as this guy goes he killed himself...what a quitter. WAhhhh I got locked up for killing someone....dude take what you get in court and deal with it. oh but wait he couldn't do that. What a sissy.
