Edwin Cowell, Dean of Students at Salisbury University, has graciously agreed to chair this group. All meetings of the group will be open to the public, and staff support will be provided by the Salisbury Police Department. The first meeting of the group will be this Thursday, September 25th, at 4:00 P.M., in Room 305/306 of the Government Office Building.

I have a question.
Why is the Chief of Police of the City of Salisbury not listed as a member of the Crime Task Force? Or is this,but, another glaring example of his poor leadership and lack of responsibility.
Who knows maybe all the meeting are scheduled to conflict with "Happy Hour".
I find it interesting that the Naacp and a black church are on the board, where is the white churches or a civic white group?? Guess they want to make sure their brotha's aren't falsely accused by the MAN

One can only hope something of value will come of this. Without the Chief of Police and the States Attorney being present the Task Force will NOT be able to provide the necessary changes, which would lower the crime rate in the City.
What the hell is the purpose of this task force? We know, even though Barrie and Chiefy have denied for years, there is crime in the city as well as drugs and gangs. Stop wasting peoples time and resources on task forces and studys.
I'll tell you what we need.
1. We need more police on the street.
2. We need those sub stations reopened and additional ones opened in other areas where crime is rising.
3. We need better leadership than we have within the city.
4. Remove the criminals from office running this city. Yes, I called them criminal. The way they've run this city into the ground is nothing less than criminal.
5. We need to get our heads out of our collective asses and vote these miscreants out of office.
Let's hope Sheriff Lewis is the leader. Actually he is a task force by himself.
I don't know whose idea it was to get Ed Cowell to chair, but kudos.
Level-headed guy with good, strong family values.

P.S. I hope this group has, as their REAL mission, determining the actual breadth of the problem, and then coming up with some responsible solutions, and not just to reinforce the administration's "there's no crime problem in SBY", position. THAT would be a shame.

I thought the city had Crime Task Force started by Mark McIver and Jay Pierce. They used to meet at the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce. Oh that's right, next year is an election year.
Perhaps this "Crime Task Force" might appeal to the sensibilities of the voters of Salisbury to finally make a change in the Mayors Office. Were this to be successful than a new Police Chief would be forthcoming. Then and only then will a worthwhile effort to lower crime in Salisbury be possible.
I seem to remember a similar effort 4 or 5 years ago which produced a lot of conversation but no solutions.
This Task Force,although domed to be of little value, is all well intentioned people can do when they get no support from the City Police leadership.
The ONLY solution to the City's crime situation is Cops on the street. The only way that is going to happen is with new leadership at the top of the City P.D.
Don't use that word criminal or you will be on Vic Laws III's list to get one of his infamous letters.

we need people in charge to get the police paid what they deserve stop pinching every penny and cutting every pro active thing requested to help police do their job. Get k-9 to city police officers, get more officers, get better equipement....sounds like they are just f#%%^ed up all the way round
Give the city police pro active officers sheriff lewis in charge for a month, the resources he brings to the table and you'll see some criminals running, and the courts putting people in jail for long sentences.

I have to wonder at the fortuitous timing of this announcement. We have a mayor of Salisbury appointing this crime task force, which is how likely (???) to stop or greatly affect crime after thousands (or tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands) of years of human crime. Gosh, I wish someone, somewhere had thought of appointing a single crime task force at anytime in the past. What a difference that would have made...It is so wonderful to discover that the government, the police, the courts and our community finally realize that there is a problem!
Seriously though, why did Barrie appoint Cowen to head this task farce, sorry task force, at this specific time? Cowen has a fair amount of influence as SU's Dean of Students. I have heard more than one person say that a high level administrator at SU is an unwise choice for election to Fruitland City Council. They say it is double dipping or that that it would concentrate too much power in one person's hands or that it just feels wrong or sets a bad precedent as in do we really want one of the rulers at SU to be one of the rulers of Fruitland also? Do we?
Speaking of bad, once again, I must mention that Barrie's timing seems ALL TOO politically motivated. If you wanted to support someone you favored, just before an election, without being too obvious, would you send out a press release announcing their appointment as Chairperson of a crime-busting task force? I refer to none other than SU's Dean of Students, Edwin Cowen? The press release did firmly stipulate that Dean Cowen, GRACIOUSLY accepted the challenge.
It is poor taste and bad judgement on Barrie's part to think that she can and will influence Fruitland's elections. She should keep her nose and questionable machinations north of Fruitland in the future!
With Shields and Ashanti there will be lots of racial overtone, and Caucasian member who suggests getting tough on the perps will be called a racist.

It is kinda funny, but that OFFICIAL press release said of the task force that
"their work will be a report with tangiBLE and quantifiaBLE recommendations for implementation as soon as feasiBLE. Notice how many words end with BLE (pronounced bull!)
By the way, WTF is a quantifiable recommendation?? I'll bet yo english teacher don't know neither!

Is Cowell running for Fruitland City Council????
Whether yes or no, given the lack of cooperation SU has given on cracking down on their own students, having one of their people chair this is a concern. Not so much a comment on Cowell as on Dudley-Eschbach who has shown she doesn't give a rat's a$$ what students do to the community, only what happens to the students.
Duh, woman, it goes hand in hand.
What the hell is Shanie doing on this task force? She has stated on numerous occasions there is no crime in Salisbury. Crime is under control in Salisbury. Murders aren't murders when they aren't random. Mary Ashanti shame on you for bowing once again to Barrie Tilghmans foolishness. Doesnt the mayor know there are more black people in the city than Shanie and Mary?
Seriously folks. Someone HAD to do something, even if it's just to shine some light on the crime situation in SBY. At least this group of people are varied enough to, hopefully, have HONEST discussion. And perhaps, give the public some HONEST answers to questions we haven't been allowed to ask out loud.
Why wouldn't the group include Davis Ruark or someone representing his office? Aren't they an essential element in the crime cycle?

Why weren't you ALLOWED to ask a question? What prevented you from asking a question? The only thing that stops anyone from doing anything is themselves. There are no laws against asking questions. Maybe you were to afraid to ask for fear of Barries vengeance? You have nothing to fear but fear itself. This is exactly how Salisbury got to where it is now, everyone afraid to stand up. Now there is a terrible mess to clean up because the citizenry sat in the corner pissing and moaning about things but never got up and said anything to anyone that could or would make a difference. I don't feel one bit sorry for you. You did nothing, you got nothing. Keep sitting there in fear and let others clean up the mess for you. I hope you appreciate the fruits of their labors.
you want to stop crime, under-cover agents and snitchs, thats how you stop crime. you have to get in the gutter with them.
if it were possible to create low interest loans for families that want a home maybe you could start to save some of these lost areas. the rental properties in certain areas of the community surely arent helping. the loss of so many single family homes with-in salisbury is what i consider to be the biggest problem in the down fall of salisbury from what it once was. and im by no means saying that all people who rent are criminal, not in the least. but you all know this is true.
So this whole Crime Task Force was the Mayors idea.
I suppose old Chiefy went to her and urged her to take this action.
His conversation must have gone something like this.
Mayor (or whatever he calls her)there is no way I can get a grip on Salisbury's crime rate. After all travel time to and from my out of City responsibilities takes up a majority of my work day. Plus when I am in the City those testy employees at the department want to whine about work loads, low salaries, the poor condition of the fleet and no respect from the citizens.
Mayor (or whatever he calls her) I was a Major in Balt-more and did not have to answer to, or even talk to the street cops. So lets get a Crime Task Force together and when they report they could not find a way to reduce crime, which they will. We will be able to stand before those pesky citizens and say see we told you so.
Then you and I can jet off to another meeting/conference somewhere and let the Major and Captains try to run that dis functional outfit.
