Roaming Meat Vendors
Joe, would you be willing to post a question for me? There are a couple of guys driving around selling meat out of a deep freezer stored in the bed of their pickup truck. The packaging of the meat and the way its being stored makes it seem legit enough that my husband decided to buy some. I was pretty skeptical of the whole thing, however, we thawed some and cooked it up yesterday, and I couldn't even eat it. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen these guys and bought meat from them? They apparently drive all the way down into the eastern shore of VA with it, so maybe someone else has. Did anyone else decide not to eat it after all? Does anyone else think its not really cow? Is there a place that we can take what's left over to find out what it really is? This is so disgusting!!!!!

My Dad bought from someone. I can't remember the name of company. I think it started with an "H". The meat wasn't bad, but it wasn't worth what they charge for it. They stopped by a couple times since then, but we haven't ordered anything else.
I had the same guys visit in Fruitland. After looking at the freezer in the back of the pickup I told them that I wasn't interested. Seemed a little sketchy to me.
Sorry about your luck. Just remember that you can get bulk pricing at Sam's Club.
It's probably just USDA grade "choice" which is the arbitrary name given for the lowest sell-able grade that is legal for human consumption. Then, they "pump" it with saline solution and call it "marinated". This just increases package weight, which in turn cooks out, and essentially boils the meat when cooking. Now these are my guesses, but I'm sure I'm right on. Why do I know? I used to own a diner and a BBQ/Blues joint.......I know my meat.
Just remember, you get what you pay for.

My fiance just bought some yesterday afternoon. When I got home there was a freezer full of meat. It looks really good but we haven't eaten any yet. Now I scared to eat it!
Is there anyone out there who really thinks buying packaged meat... from two strangers... going door-to-door... with a freezer on the back of a pickup truck... is a good idea?

I live in Pocomoke and two guys came to my house selling meat to. I bought some steaks and burgers. Their truck had a name on it about meats. I asked the guys where this company was from and he said Easton. But my hubby cooked the steaks on the grill and they actually were very good! So were the burgers. We've been eating them for about 3 weeks now and are still alive! lol
i have seen this truck with the freezer at chestnut manor apt's in delmar md a lot
i bought two cases a couple weeks ago in Fruitland. Have cooked several packs and enjoyed all so far. Not had any problems

Who would buy meat from two guys that look like junkies. They came to my house last week in a beat up old pickup truck from the 80's. It looked like the driver threw out his joint just as he was exiting the vehicle. Come on people, just say no.
I thought this was another scam thats been going on around salisbury and other surrounding areas. Two men have been around here also. I have never seen a name on there little white pick up truck. I also have never bought anything from them due to it just not seeming right.Anyone know if this is a scam like the magazine deal?
I bought some several months ago from Butchers Choice out of Baltimore and so far the meat and seafood has been good although overpriced in my opinion...wouldn't do it again.
Mr. Albero.....do you mean we shouldn't trust door-to-door meth addicts we have never met who try to convince us to buy over-priced grey,"meat" (notice I didn't say "beef")instead of using our bonus card to take advantage of the cold, red, graded steaks Giant has been selling in their refrigerated butcher area, or go to one of our own trustworthy local butchers? Am I also possibly also misguided by still driving a Ford Pinto with a "Gary Comegy's for Mayor" sticker too?

There must be more than one gu going around. The guy I bought from did not have one of those household chest freezers in the back of the truck but instead had one of the walk in units like the local seafood guys use. His truck was a red dodge dakota I think. He was very courteous & well kept unlike some of the descriptions left by other posters.I am on my second case of steaks now & no problems to speak of. They have very little fat & have found no gristle as of yet. This guy also has frozen seafood as well. I may buy again if he comes back around. He left his name and number but I have misplaced it.

you could go to foodlion ,remember how they where bleaching old meat to make it look fresh.
the health dept or anyone else, done anything about that.
99% of most people dont have a clue what there eating anyway.
Have some fresh scrapple in the morning,tell me how good it was , then ill tell you what's in it.

Injecting meat with water is no secret. I have been buying from Sysco for 25 years and there biggest seller is water, it's injected or purged in everything. It's not just Sysco, don't get me wrong, all the processing places are guilty of this. Lot's of profit in that there water buddy.
My how times change! Today no way would I buy meat out of a pickup. The couple came to our house (Mt. Hermon Rd) with a guy and a girl. This truck had Delaware tags. Many years ago, I bought shrimp from a pickup parked where Soft Touch is now. It was the best shrimp I ever ate>>> fresh from NC waters. Today, NO WAY.
The old, old, adage " Let the buyer beware." Is as relevant today as it was yesterday.
It is difficult to feel sorry for folks who would buy meat from two guys riding around in a pickup.
I had a door to door salesperson not selling meat but stuckeys pecan logs that looked vaquely familar ot a bowel movement after a second helping of sucatash. I of coarse declined and toward him he would be reported to Salisbury News.

I had the same guy. He said it was surplus sweetbreads, etc from Stuckeys. The pecan log looked like it also had corn kernels mixed in. What's up with that?
I think I can tell ya. Ever heard the phrase "and around the corner FUDGE is made? Sounds like this guy ain't droppin the kids off at the pool. He's wrapping them up for resale.
Okay what is up? Two guys displaying a basket of Stuckeys pecan logs knocked on my door but curiously enough the pecan logs looked like some fecal matter that had been run through a seemless gutter machine with small chunks of vegetables laced intermittenly through out.
The stuckeys guy came to my house with trinkets, wicker baskets and those candy logs wrapped in plastic. they looked and smelled more like dog turds then high dollar chocolate.
Did the guys from Stuckeys have Virginia plates? That's the closest Stuckeys I know of. Sounds like to me they're getting their product right from the Wicomico river. The thought of the possibilities of what's in those pecan logs make me sick!!!
Am I now reading this right, and people are selling fecal logs door-to-door....People...Gander Mountain...Remington 870...just rack the action in front of them-you won't even actually have to buy shells for them to leave..forever..seriously.
Hey I bought a couple of those pecan logs and they don't smell so good but the price was right. I going to freeze mine and take them tom the health department on Monday. I hope it not what I think it might be because I put one in my husbands lunch box this morning.
A girl who works in our ofice brought some in on Tuesday. They did have a pungent odor. They were tapered at one end and squared off at the other end like they were slammed shut in bombay doors. She swore by the taste, though. We all told her to scat.
This sort of thing with the meat happens all over the country. I have encounterd it in 4 states so far. Some of them say they are from "a company like Omaha Steaks" and that this is surplus cut for people who changed their minds. I don't buy it. I've had food poisoning before, and it isn't fun!
Also, I don't believe Stuckey's has ever gone door to door, so this is a scam. I worked for them many years ago. The pecan logs definitely did not have veggies in them!
I wouldn't believe this post except my neighbor called earlier to see if I had seen the guy from stuckeys. I told her I had not and am I glad I didn't. Gross!
So you people are out there buying horse meat and dog turds. P.T. Barnum was never more correct. Bon appetite!
This guy stopped by the station the other day and offered to sell us the meat at a discounted price. We turned him away and said no thanks! He even tried to through the Lord into the sales pitch, by saying he was a reverend and we should buy the meat to give to our fellow brothers because Jesus would like that. CREEPY!!!

I had two guys come to my house in a truck almost like the Schwan's man comes in but it was smaller. They were called oxford meats and the truck looked very nice with pictures all over the truck and very professional. They are from Oxford Md and have a website it's oxfordmeats.com the website isn't much just tells you what they offer. We bought all kinds of steaks and although on a few the fat was really tough the steaks had a wonderful taste and was some of the best steaks I have ever had, it could have all went downhill by now so don't hold me to it :)

Seriously, though, I admit I'm rude. I don't answer the door. If you haven't called to say you're dropping by, I might not even look out the window to see if it's someone I know. I just sit back and let my big dog growl and bark like a nut- people usually leave pretty promptly then. Hopefully no one who comes to my door is truly in need. They better go to the neighbor's house instead.
Has anyone considered that these people (particuarly the man reportedly from Stuckey's)might actually be casing your home? These are hard economic times, and people resort to all sorts of base behavior. People need to be cautious- a criminal only needs a few moments to see what you might have in your home. Just something to think about.

We had some guys come through our neighborhood from Oxford Meats. Initially we turned them away but when they went to the neighbors we decided to have a look-see anyway. They gave us a brochure and showed us all their product. Everything is individually vaccum sealed and in legitimate packaging. I had mentioned having contact with a guy selling stuff out of a chest freezer in his truck and they said to watch out for them. These guys said they have about 9 trucks that travel all over. We bought filet mignon, breaded shrimp, salmon, flounder, burgers and chicken breasts. So far the stuff we have tried is very good. As far as the cost it probably was not much more expensive than what you get in store. Better yet it was delivered. My wife has a friend who buys from these guys regularly. I'm usually skeptical of stuff like this myself but I was very satisfied with my purchase.

I'd feel a little more comfortable buying from someone that has a marked truck with a freezer body (like Schwann's) and a brochure, however the ones in a beat up pickup and a freezer in the back....no way. I have had these guys come up on several occasions to the house offering to sell meat, each time claiming to be something different, like the example of the reverend. One guy told me he was a veteran and that I should help the veterans out by purchasing the meat. Might be, but I'm not buying. Not to mention those trucks dont have generators so how is the meat staying frozen each time the door is opened and closed? Whoever the head "distributor" is, has been advertising several weeks in the help wanted section of the Sussex Guide--

There was also another advertisement that I cannot find that stated all you needed was a pickup truck to deliver quality meats with.
I'll stick with buying from my local butcher. Worth the money for quality and great tasting BEEF.
Almost got into a fist fight with them tonight on Honeysuckle Drive in Salisbury. The one dope fiend was talkin trash to me 16 year old son, so I went out to see what was up and the driver said some crap and jumped in his meat wagon and hauled ass up the street. I swung at him as ran by, but missed. I'll gethim....I see those bastards all over the place. White Chevy S10 Delaware tag C49716? . Call the law if you see them. They suck.
Some guys from Butchers choice of marlyand just stopped by my neighborhood. Seemed pretty sketchy with the truck with a cooler and dry ice in the back. also why do they need to keep some of the boxes but give you the big box. Also, no markings on the meat, just some printed numbers, and they didnt look like dates to me. No thanks bro, keep your meat!

I got involved with a guy that worked for the "butcher's choice distributors" company. Bad mistake. I did learn a lot about how they operate though. Their headquarters are in Dallas, TX on Floyd Circle, owner is a guy named Jeff Dale. He opens up shops all over the country even if they shut down fast after working an area over. He is out minimal expense buying cheap meat and hiring people that can't get jobs anywhere else, even if he has to pay a few tickets here and there. Most guys are fresh out of prison too. I learned a lot the hard way. Stay away!
To all of you who can't understand how a freezer on a pick-truck is powered without a generator,the answer is: an inverter. Look it up!
