MDE Fines City of Salisbury

City Incurs MDE Fines for Consent Order Violations
By Terry E. Cohen, Council Member

Just received by the city council on July 8, 2008, is a memo from the Office of the Mayor concerning a $10,200 in fines by the MDE for violations of the consent order discharge limits. This relates to a period from June 2006 through April 10, 2008. The bulk of the violations (11) and fines ($6,500) relate to the period November 2007through February 2008.

The memo covers a June 13, 2008 correspondence from Department of Public Works Director Jim Caldwell, with which he attached the communications from the MDE received June 4, 2008.

These fines are not related to the two spills in June of this year.

I won’t speculate as to why this information took about a month to make its way to council. Given the great concern expressed by many about the WWTP and the possibility of fines, I wanted to share this information with our citizens as soon as possible.

City Administrator John Pick was kind enough to send me my requested information for any communications from the City to the MDE about the June 2008 spills. I will post that information later today. To the best of my knowledge, we are still awaiting communications back from the MDE.

Note from Earls Sister: Looks like the city is on a roll...DOWNHILL. These fines don't even include the most recent spills, can't wait to see what they will be. What took the city a month to get this information to the council members? All of this withholding of information certainly doesn't do anything for their credibility.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The last two paragraphs of this post were not written by Councilwoman Terry Cohen -- apparently they were added by the author, "EarlsSister".

PS - I happen to aggree completely with the last paragraph!

Well, I hate to say it, but it is about time that this city was fined for their inefficient work on the WWTP, and the fines for June should be even higher. I also agree with the last paragraph in the post, from EarlsSister.

Earls Sis, your hyperlink doesn't work.

Otherwise the fines are a nice step towards accountability. Sadly the loss of time for use of the river and impact on the river is not compensated by these fines.

Get things right please! Then things would be compensated better!

tax-payers pay the fines, shit the mayor and the muppetts probably couldnt care less. its not there money, its yours.

Kudos to Ms. Cohen for putting the spotlight on something that Barrie and Bubba Comegys want to keep in the dark.

And also to Earlssister for posting this.

And, Barrie, don't even think about repeating that "it's like changing the oil in a car going 65mph....." crap. This car is in the ditch and you put it there.

I think we should all pitch in , hire an atterny and sue the mare for the fines and river destruction/losses. To me it's obvious the spills could have been avoided or MDE would not have issued them. Its the least we could do to try and recoupe some of the losses.

Please save your time, energy (and money) for next year's city election, when we can get rid of Barrie and Shanie Shields, and be sure to block Bubba Comegys if he runs for mayor and reelect Ms. Campbell (or elect her as the new mayor). Are you on board for that?

$10,200 = Chicken Feed!!

Someone needs to go to the federal pen for these crimes against the people and the environment.

I don't want to load up my file storage with files from other sites.

Anon 10:15 the only thing I added to this post is in italics at the very end and the line naming the source of information. Everything else is from the original post.

3:11, you keep saying wait wait wait, you think there will be a city worth saving by next year? You dont think she should be sued, jailed, tarred n feathered? This is exactly why our country is falling apart, Government officials running around like crack-heads with someone else's credit cards.....wait wait wait my a$$!!! I'm soon to be impoverished.....I mean annexed!

The time is coming where the best place to live in this country is going to be on Indian Reservations. Gotta love that sovereignty.

must be another spill tonight, (7/8)as the air REEKS of sewage...smells like a toilet that hasn't been flushed in a couple months.

That's probably the crap flowing through the pipes at Waverly, Isabella and Fitzwater Streets. Imagine what it will be like when they install those bigger pipes. The crap will get to the river even faster.
