Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily.
He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows
The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million.

Thats because Joe takes no shit from anyone. He runs a tight ship and if the bleeding hearts, which Arizona is full of, don't like it, they try to sue and lose every time. He puts the prisoners in pink, he houses them in tents in the desert. He treats them as what they are, CRIMINALS. Everyone knows out here if you don't like the way Sheriff Joe runs things, DON'T GO TO JAIL.
Joe is the man, this country needs more like Joe Arpaio.

I used to live in Maricopa County. Arpaio is a serious hard ass but he's well-loved by most of the people who live there because, as a previous commenter said, he takes no shit. Tent City is brilliant, Arpaio's handling of prisoners, utilizing them to benefit the city/county has always been brilliant. We could only wish we had someone with such strong leadership skills--whose interest truly lies in doing the best for the community while punishing those who earned it.

I wonder if Mike Lewis has the backbone to be the Joe Arpaio of the East Coast? Things would change for certain on this eastern shore, quick, fast and in a hurry.
