Fog Delay?

What if I told you that I had to be 2 hours late to work today because of fog? What would you say to an employee that took off two hours from work every morning it was foggy?

My brother-in-law had a parent conference today at 8:30 this morning because his daughter got in trouble in school. He went in to find that the teacher wouldn't be able to attend due to a fog delay. If fog delays are necessary for the safety of kids on school buses....that's one thing. But grown adults? And they get paid! Paid by the taxpayer who MUST go to work in order to pay the taxes which pay Board of Ed. employees to stay home due to fog! My brother-in-law took off from work to show up as required. He lost pay. Granted it was his daughter who got in trouble and it is his responsibility. But not so much as a phone call? The principal was there. Every other person has to be at thier place of employment in order to get paid. BOE employess should be no exception.

Also....the WCBOE did not close the school on Monday, a national holiday in recognition of veterans who have served this nation for generations. But God forbid should they not get enough professional days. Look at the WCBOE web site. There isn't even a mention of Veteran's Day.

Once again I have no clue as to how any of us "older folks" survived to graduate from High School in this county. And with no "Grief Counseling" everytime some tragedy struck it's a wonder we're not all suicidal! And snow my gosh a few years back we had drifts up to 3" and they onlyhad to delay school 2 hours! County Roads & WCBOE snow assault team your my heroes!!

Same here, and I'm younger than you. I lived in the country and they wouldn't delay school. Wow. Thank GOD for Mr. Banks's (Bus 106)expert driving.

Someone has to counsel many of these kids, their parents careers are far more important. What is that career offered here in da bury? Oh yeah, retail sales, thats it.

So, anonymous....what's the point of your rambling? It has nothing to do with teachers being able to come to work late due to fog delays as far as I can tell. Please elaborate.

Once agian DUDE yor wrong. Two years ago a bus had an accident and only a few kids were hurt. Cause of accident. FOG

YOO JOE! Would be the first to scream if a bus had an accident and your kid were hurt. You would file a laws suit and try and take more of our tax dollars.

I smell ROBINSON!

Can you smell that stench Folks? Yep, it's Robinson back on my Blog while he swears he's not coming around ever again.

The funny part is, he didn't even read the article to understand the POINT!

I am a teacher, not in Wicomico County, but a teacher nonetheless, and I feel I must respond a bit.

I start off by saying that whatever particular school is involved in your brother's story, Joe, I agree that they did the wrong thing by not notifying him of a change in meeting plans.

There have been days where we had fog delays and on the drive in to school I wondered why, since visbility seemed fine. There have also been days where there was no delay at all and I never saw more than 10 yards in front of my car from the beginning to the end of the drive. If I cannot see cars in front of me, I would never see a child in a dark hoodie crossing the street.

If there is a school delay, the teachers do not have to arrive until the new opening time of the school each day. That is just the facts, like it or not. (Do not start an argument about how our lives and schedules are soooooooo easy becuase we only work from 8 - 3 and have sumemrs off. I could only wish for it to be that easy.)

The rules governing delays are for the safety of the children and the employees. If you have a problem with that, then I don't know what to tell you. Your brother suffered from poor office planning and lack of forethouhgt, not because of a fog delay.

The decision on whether or not schools are closed on any holiday rests with the State BOE, not teh individual counties. Maryland also did not have off for Columbus Day.

Times change. Priorities change. The way kids grow up now and are raised by adults (or not raised, depending on the case) is a commentary on larger problems with society as a whole. If the schools are over-cautious where safety is concerned, so be it.

Most people in education get criticized constantly by people who have never spent one minute inside a classroom since they were in College of High School. When the kids are in school, or on their way here, they are our responsibility. We (educators) are going to ensure that they are safe from the time they leave home, until the time they get back.

A fog delay is an inconvienience to a schedule. A hurt child is a trajedy to a life. I know where I am placing my chips.

The funny part here is, it's a story written by a friend of mine not wanting to be mentioned by name.

I don't have a Brother who lives on the Shore. LMAO!

I went in a county elementary school on the east side the other day and there were 11 foriegn flags hanging proudly from the ceiling of the lunch room. WTF is up with that? Why are county tax dollars buying foriegn flags and displaying them throughout the school? Time for an elected school board and time to oust the idiots now.

This is America there should only be one flag flying in that school.

A few years ago my daughter swerved to avoid a rabbit in the road and hit a tree. She was not hurt and the car could be fixed but,the county should delay school when there are rabbits on the roads and all trees on the roadside should be cut down so that you can't hit them when you run off the road. I have also started a systematic destruction of the entire rabbit population. And since were getting dumbed down more all the time let's be sure those that make it to school get free condoms and limo rides to Planned Parenthood. It just keeps getting dumber all the time!!

Obviously, another informed, sober, reasoned debate by people who know everything about the subject.

If you have such a problem with everything, have your kids and grandkids home-schooled so you can teach them in the jingoistic, isolationist, intolerant way you see fit.

Jesus. Why are teachers always the enemy of the uneducated?

I was miffed that public schools in MD & VA decided to stay open when other government facilities were closed in observance of Veterans Day.And now I hear that FOREIGN flags are being lofted at one of our area schools? This IS still America!
I could care less about Columbus Day....he didnt "discover" America,he invaded it.I can climb my big ass up a utility pole and "discover" electricity then if thats the case.....but I think Choptank will feel differently!

Wow. I suppose history and geography classes should also remove any references to any countries other than the United States, exscept when talking about how our military kicked their asses when needed.

Most modern mathematics was developed by Europeans, so I suppose we need to drop that too.

Trust me, there are much bigger issues regarding the state of schools and the students that attend than the ability of them to recognize and identify the flags of otehr countries.

If a school or classroom is displaying flags of other nations, there is an academic reason for it. Each and every school has the American Flag flying out front and hanging in every room, and every student recites the pledge of allegiance every day.

Seriously, what is it you want the schools to do?

Dan, If it's any consolation, I don't blame teachers, I blame parents and the laws that forbid them to parent without reprecussion. A teacher is only as good as he/she is allowed to be. Sadly, you all are not allowed to teach, you can only teach to the test. Anyone can teach a kid to take a test. It's a teacher that teaches these kids to make good life choices, in conjunction with parental guidance.

Amen, Donna. If everyone had your approach to it, everything would be a lot better all over the place.

Dan.....I have no problem with delaying the arrival of children to school because of fog. I have a problem when BOE employees are excused from thier normal arrival time due to fog when every other employee I know, including other county employees, must be at work on time. Say what you want, Dan, but the teachers unions have been so powerful that they have been able to pull off special treatment such as this for some time and I believe it will only get worse. Don't get me wrong, I have a great deal of respect for teachers. They must have the patience of saints to put up with kids these days. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment as it relates to the fact that some parents don't raise thier children properly as well as Donna's opinion that teachers are required to teach to test and not to learn - as sad as that is. But how can anyone disagree that in many cases teachers get preferential treatment. I'm not an enemy of teachers and I'm certainly not ignorant. If I'd had the time I would have taught my kids at home in order to have spared them the politically skewed teachings of the public school system. Students should be taught HOW to think, not WHAT to think. And tolerance, my friend, is severely over rated and should exercised judiciously on a case by case basis rather than by class entitlement.

Dan,

If everyone had my approach parents would still be spanking their kids without fear of the law getting involved and teachers would still be teaching without fear of students. My approach is not only illegal it is definitely not politically correct. I never claimed to be PC and I hope someone pulls me back in if I ever start to lean in that direction.

Bob said...

I agree with you. Don't worry - we won't let you get that way.

dan said...

Granddad, Whether you agree with unions or not and what they do for is members, you must be smart enought to know that without them, teaching would be an even worse paying profession than it is now.

Also, while other county employees do not get to go to work early beacause of the fog, they also get to go home as soon as the clock strikes "quittin' time." School may end at 3:00 (or somewhere around there, depending) but most teachers are not in their cars before 3:30-4:00, not includeing the work they take home with them every night and every weekend.
