House farm bill passes with controversial food stamp changes

The House passed its farm bill Thursday by a vote of 213-211 after weeks of uncertainty over whether leadership would be able to secure enough support within the fractious GOP Conference to pass a measure that is critical to farm country.

Republican leadership succeeded in rebounding from last month’s stunning defeat of the massive $860 billion legislation by meeting the demands of the House Freedom Caucus, which helped tank the first vote by withholding support as leverage to force a roll call on a conservative immigration measure. Theimmigration bill, written by House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), was voted down earlier Thursday, but clearing that hurdle led the influential conservative bloc to deliver just enough support to pass the farm bill.

During her Saturday opening statement on Fox News Channel’s “Justice,” Jeanine Pirro responded to the recent treatment members of President Donald Trump’s administration have received, saying the left has “devolved” into political abuse.

Activists harassed Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen at a restaurant and later protested outside of her home, while a Red Hen owner refused to serve White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

“What’s happening in this country today is beyond anything we’ve ever seen in American politics. Political debate, at the very heart of the founding of this country, has devolved into political harassment and outright political abuse,” said Pirro.

Meadows says Justice Dept. turned over only 'small percentage' of subpoenaed Russia documents

A conservative lawmaker late Saturday challenged media reports that the Department of Justice gave members of Congress documents related to the probe of Russian eletion meddling.

Late Saturday, the Associated Press reported the Justice Department this week turned over some of the documents related to the Russia investigation.

But Rep. Mark Meadows, North Carolina Republican, called the report was “not accurate” and said the department provided merely a fraction of what lawmakers subpoenaed.

“New reports of DOJ/FBI compliance with document requests are NOT accurate. While they have turned over additional documents, the new documents represent a small percentage of what they owe,” Mr. Meadows Tweeted.

“The notion that DOJ/FBI have been forthcoming with Congress is false,” he continued.

The Southern Poverty Law Center isn't authoritative, it's garbage

Maajid Nawaz is a former extremist whose new role, speaking out against extremism, got him branded as an extremist by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The SPLC, which bracketed Nawaz with racists and anti-Islamic bigots, had to apologize, retract its publication, and pay Nawaz $3.4 million.

Yet when a major, well-respected magazine covered this story, here was its lead: “The Southern Poverty Law Center, the venerable civil-rights organization, has issued a formal apology to British political activist Maajid Nawaz….”

This reporting is part of the problem. The SPLC is not “venerable”; it is contemptible. It is not a “civil-rights organization”; it is a scam. Whatever its origins, the organization rotted to its core and has become a financial and ideological racket.

Its business model is to smear defenders of religious liberty or critics of radical Islam by lumping them with racist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, and then to raise massive amounts of money fooling credulous liberals into fearing a massive, underground army of “hate groups.” This fraud helps real hate groups by sowing confusion, harms and endangers the innocent groups it targets, and makes many millions of dollars for the organization and its corrupt management.

Ken Silverstein, the liberal investigative journalist who probably has studied the SPLC more than anyone else, wrote in 2010, “I feel that the Law Center is essentially a fraud and that it has a habit of casually labeling organizations as ‘hate groups.’”

The Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Hillary Clinton have aHUGE Weiner problem that is even bigger than we first realized.

According to the recently released inspector general report, on September 28 and 29, 2016 the New York office of the FBI immediately reported to the Washington headquarters its discovery of, first, 141,000 and then 350,000 emails on the laptop of Anthony Weiner — also known as “Carlos Danger,” a now-convicted sex offender. Mr. Weiner is the husband of Hillary Clinton’s inseparable aide Huma Abedin.

Now we know by October 4, the New York office had found 700,000 emails. The New York agents had seen and reported to FBI leadership they had seen email headers, all domain names, Mrs. Clinton’s initials on one sensitive but not classified document, and the missing BlackBerry backups.

The New York agents described it as the “entire file” of all Hillary Clinton emails from 2006 until 2016, including the BlackBerry messages that Comey himself had referred to as “the golden emails.”

Katie Arrington, S.C. Republican Who Beat Mark Sanford, Is Badly Injured In Car Crash

The state lawmaker surprised the political world when she upset the incumbent in a GOP primary just a week and a half ago. Now, Arrington is in the hospital after a fatal collision Friday night.

Just about 10 days ago, Katie Arrington was celebrating a hard-fought electoral win. The conservative South Carolina state lawmaker had dealt longtime incumbent Rep. Mark Sanford a surprising defeat in the state's congressional GOP primary.

Now Arrington, 47, is in the hospital facing quite another kind of fight.

A friend had been driving the U.S. House hopeful Friday night when their car was struck by a vehicle driving the wrong direction on the highway, according to her spokesperson.

Capt. Roger Antonio of the Charleston County Sheriff's Office tells NPR the driver of the other vehicle died at the scene in Adams Run, S.C. Arrington's friend, 59-year-old Jacqueline Goff, has been hospitalized with serious injuries.

Zoning Codes used to create 'Gun Store-Free Zones'

Cities and townships are using zoning restrictions to create “gun-store-free zones” around the country. This includes over 20 such zones in California alone.

According to the Trace, a gun control journalism outlet, such use of zoning codes allows cities to “effectively ban firearm stores” in lieu of Congressional refusal to pass more gun laws.

Piscataway, New Jersey, is one of the latest townships to adopt this approach. They have no federally licensed firearms dealers in their township, and the towncCouncil hopes to use a zoning resolution to keep any licensed dealers from setting up shop in the future. Their resolution, according to the Trace, “bans gun stores from opening within 1,000 feet of schools, parks, health care facilities, and other sensitive locations. While the new zoning law does not explicitly forbid gun stores from opening in the suburb, it makes dealers subject to conditions that almost no location meets.”

Alameda County, California, served as an impetus for the Piscataway resolution. In Teixeira v. County of Alameda, plaintiffs argued that the county’s zoning codes violated the Second Amendment by stringently limiting a citizen’s access to firearms via prohibitions on gun stores. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the plaintiff, only later to have that decision reversed by the Ninth Circuit en banc in 2017.

There was a quiet sense of foreboding among all those present. ‘The granite walls in Folsom are about eight feet thick,’ recalled Jim Marshall, the only photographer present whose pictures have been collected in a new book to commemorate the gig.

‘When the second gates clanked shut, John said, “Jim, there’s a feeling of permanence in that sound.” After that, I started wondering when we were going to get out of there.’

Steve Hilton: On immigration, America’s incompetent elite fiddles while the border burns

Immigration has always been the most inflammatory of political issues. We all have strong feelings. Mine are shaped by the fact that I’m an immigrant twice over.

My parents fled communism in Hungary and were welcomed by Britain, where I was born and raised. And now here I am in America, making a new home for our family since we moved here in 2012. It’s impossible for me to be anything other than pro-immigration.

Let me add a few more elements of personal context. Soon after moving to the U.S., I came back from a short foreign trip and was detained at one of America’s busiest airports. There was a technical problem with my passport. This arose from the fact that the last time I had crossed the border, I had been part of the group traveling with my former boss, the United Kingdom’s then-Prime Minister David Cameron.

I was held without my passport in a room alongside all the others who had been detained, yelled at and treated with rudeness and contempt by border officials. I remember thinking: if this is terrifying for me, with all my advantages, imagine how frightening it must be for the other people here.

And then another, much more frightening occasion: returning from a family trip, it turned out that my young son’s new passport didn’t include his visa – it was inside his old passport. Again: we were detained at the border by aggressive and needlessly rude border officials. While I looked after my other son, the one whose documents were at issue was separated from my wife while she dealt with the situation. His terrified cries were simply unbearable.

Our ordeal lasted roughly 45 minutes. It must have been four or five years ago. And yet we still remember it as one of the most traumatic experiences we have been through. And again: that was us, with all our advantages, our confidence and ability to confront and reason with bureaucrats.

Trump: Only Workable Solution is ‘Detain, Prosecute, and Promptly Remove’ Anyone Who Crosses Border

During Saturday’s Weekly Address, President Trump discussed immigration and said that the “crisis of illegal immigration” can only be solved by Congress “and the only solution that will work is being able to detain, prosecute, and promptly remove anyone who illegally crosses the border.”

“Our country is currently facing a crisis of illegal immigration on our southern border. Democrat-supported loopholes in our federal laws have enabled roughly half-a-million illegal immigrant family members and minors from Central America to be released into the United States since 2014, at unbelievably tremendous taxpayer expense.

While illegal aliens can only be held for a period of days or weeks, it can take years to move their cases through the legal system to actually try to send them back to their home countries. It is a ridiculous process. For example, of the removal orders issued for unaccompanied alien children over a recent two-year period, 90% were done in absentia, that means they weren’t there and they never showed up for their removal hearing. What else is new?

On Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit to the U.S.-Mexico border to tour a shelter for immigrant children, but all the media could talk about was her wardrobe choice before and after the visit. President Donald Trump twisted the media's attacks back on them.

As CNN's Betsy Klein reported, the first lady wore an olive green jacket as she boarded her plane from Andrews Air Force Base. The back of the jacket read, "I really don't care. Do u?" in white graffiti-style lettering. She did not wear the jacket when she left the plane in McAllen, Texas, but it showed up again when she returned to Andrews Air Force Base.

Various media outlets pounced, and the jacket did indeed seem an odd choice.

MSNBC contributor Scott Dworkin declared, "That photo-op just made it clear Melania Trump hates children too. She should be as trusted as the buffoon she married. Posing for propaganda."

Trump Scraps Congressional Picnic, Donates Food to Military Hospital

President Trump scrapped the annual congressional picnic and donated the perishable food to veterans at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, a White House spokeswoman announced Friday.

Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for first lady Melania Trump, announced Friday that the perishable food slated to be served at the picnic was “donated to Walter Reed” and the nonperishable food would be used at future events.

Trump said Wednesday he would be canceling Thursday’s picnic so Congress could focus on crafting a comprehensive immigration bill to alleviate the crisis at the border.

Michelle Shortencarrier, a spokeswoman for the United Service Organizations (USO) in Bethesda, said the hospital served the donated food for lunch on Friday to patients, families, and employees. She added that the menu included rib-eye steaks, coleslaw, spinach, black beans, quinoa, and pies.

Detained migrants say they were told they could get kids back on way out of U.S.

HOUSTON — Central American men separated from their children and held in a detention facility outside Houston are being told they can reunite with their kids at the airport if they agree to sign a voluntary deportation order now, according to one migrant at the facility and two immigration attorneys who have spoken to detainees there.

A Honduran man who spoke to The Texas Tribune Saturday estimated that 20 to 25 men who have been separated from their children are being housed at the IAH Polk County Secure Adult Detention Center, a privately-operated U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility for men located 75 miles outside Houston. He said the majority of those detainees had received the same offer of reunification in exchange for voluntary deportation.

The 24-year-old detainee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity and requested the Tribune use the pseudonym Carlos because he feared retaliation, told the Tribune that he abandoned his asylum case and agreed to sign voluntary deportation paperwork Friday out of “desperation” to see his 6-year-old daughter, who was separated from him after the pair illegally crossed the border in late May. The man said two federal officials suggested he’d be reunited with his daughter at the airport if he agreed to sign the order, which could lead to him being repatriated to his violence-torn home country in less than two weeks.

Democrat Congressman Wants 'Taxpayer-Funded Dorms'

Legislation would subsidize living expenses for House members

Democratic members of Congress want taxpayers to subsidize their housing, signing onto legislation that would allow them to deduct living expenses for members of the House of Representatives.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D., Miss.) introduced a bill that would ban members of Congress from sleeping in their offices and would change the tax code to allow House members to deduct their spending on housing in D.C. up to $3,000. The deduction would not apply to senators.

Thompson has also proposed turning a vacant building near Capitol Hill into apartments for House members at the expensive of taxpayers, which critics have dubbed a "Congressional Animal House."

The taxpayer-watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste criticized Thompson's legislation and his proposed "taxpayer-funded dorms."

Navy planning new camps to support immigration crackdown

The US Navy plans to build sprawling detention centers for tens of thousands of immigrants on remote bases in support of President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy against unlawful migration, a report said Friday.

According to a draft memo obtained by Time magazine, the navy plans to build “temporary and austere” tent cities to house 25,000 migrants across three abandoned air fields in Alabama, 47,000 people at a facility near San Francisco, and another 47,000 at a training center in southern California.

The document estimates the navy would spend $233 million to run a facility for 25,000 over six-months.

A Viewer Writes: Pittsville EMS

I was wondering at what point the county intervenes in fire department/EMS operations.

My concern, as a Pittsville resident, is that they fail to respond to EMS calls more than any other fire department in Wicomico County.

Just last week they were requested to assist Salisbury Fire Department on a car crash, and they NEVER responded.

They share a paramedic with Parsonsburg, and if that paramedic is on a call then you can count on Pittsville to not get an ambulance out the door.

I remember when Pittsville was recognized for never not responding, but what happened? I don’t think they ever recovered from the Richard Chapman fiasco.

Dead bodies found at Walmart stores a nationwide phenomenon

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Peter Unger traveled the world, first in the Navy at the tail end of the Korean War and then as a free spirit searching the ancient paths of India for life’s sacred meaning.

Toward the end of his life Unger, sporting a flowing white beard and well-off financially thanks to his handcrafted jewelry business, sought sanctuary in the idea of living simply.

But in a twist of fate, the 85-year-old who shunned worldly cares was found dead May 7, alone in a nondescript white Ford van that sat parked undisturbed for days at a Walmart, a retail giant seen by many as America’s temple of commerce and materialism.

Unger was among the growing number of people around the country who drew their last breaths in Walmart parking lots.

It is not that the parking lots are unsafe. In fact, it is the relative safety of the well-lit and busy lots - combined with a welcoming corporate policy - that has drawn more people like Unger to call the Walmart parking lots home, if only temporarily.

And where people live, they also die.

Thousands of Unfilled Jail Jobs, Millions in Overtime, 'Zero Room for Error'

States across the country are struggling to staff their prisons and jails. The shortages are costing them in overtime -- and lives lost when inmates riot against conditions likely worsened by overworked guards.

Late last summer, Rodney Miller, the executive director of the West Virginia Sheriffs’ Association and a state lawmaker, witnessed some things that shocked him.

He and other West Virginia legislators visited the state’s prisons and jails, observing from towers and from cell blocks. They saw inmates exchanging contraband drugs, inmates brought to medical care bloody from fights, and sleep-deprived guards struggling to respond to it all.

“Corrections officers were working six or seven days a week, 10- to 12- and sometimes 16-hour shifts. Some of the corrections officers were having to sleep at the facilities and then going back to work,” says Miller, who worked in law enforcement for 33 years and says he’s never seen prison workforce shortages as severe as they are now.

Coming Soon to Solitary Confinement Cells: Nature Videos

After a study showed that watching nature videos can have positive benefits for inmates, some prisons are adding them to their lineup.

Inmates held in solitary confinement live up to 23 hours of each day in a tiny cell with limited contact with other humans. The practice has been found to lead to adverse behavioral effects in inmates, including anxiety, depression, hopelessness and violent outbursts.

Most prisoners in solitary lack access to fresh air and natural light. But according to a recent study, those things can be simulated to improve their behavior and well-being.

A study published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Environment in September found that inmates who were shown nature videos for 45 minutes up to five times a week exhibited a 26 percent reduction in discipline referrals. Nearly half of the inmates reported improved moods that lasted for several hours after watching the videos, and 80 percent of them said the videos made their time in solitary easier to bear.

The Story of George Crum, Inventor of the Potato Chip

The Potato Chip Legend

George Speck was born to parents Abraham Speck and Diana Tull on July 15, 1824. He grew up in upstate New York and was hired at Moon's Lake House in the 1850s.

Moon’s Lake House was a high-end restaurant that catered to wealthy Manhattan families when Speck was hired. A regular patron of the restaurant, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, frequently forgot Speck's given surname. Vanderbilt often asked waiters to relay various requests to “Crum,” thus giving Speck the name he is now known by.

According to popular legend, the potato chip was invented when a picky customer (Vanderbilt himself, according to some reports) repeatedly sent back an order of French fries, complaining that they were too thick. Frustrated with the customer’s demands, Crum sought revenge by slicing a batch of potatoes paper-thin, frying them to a crisp, and seasoning them with lots of salt. Surprisingly, the customer loved them. Soon enough, Crum and Moon's Lake House became well-known for their special “Saratoga chips.”
Disputing the Legend

A number of notable accounts have disputed the story of Crum's culinary innovation.

Recipes for frying thin potato slices had already been published in cookbooks by the early 1800s. Several reports on Crum himself, including a commissioned biography of the chef published in 1893 and his own obituary, were curiously missing any mention of potato chips whatsoever.

Crum's sister, Kate Wicks, claimed to be the real inventor of the potato chip.

Wick’s obituary, published in The Saratogian in 1924, read, "A sister of George Crum, Mrs. Catherine Wicks, died at the age of 102, and was the cook at Moon’s Lake House. She first invented and fried the famous Saratoga Chips." This statement is supported by Wicks’ own recollections of the tale, which was published in several periodicals during her lifetime. Wicks explained that she had sliced off a sliver of potato that inadvertently fell into a hot frying pan. She let Crum taste it and his enthusiastic approval led to decision to serve the chips.

Pensioners should drink four cups of coffee a day to protect and repair their heart muscle, research suggests.

Levels of caffeine, equivalent to drinking four cups of coffee, could help to protect healthy blood vessels and repair the heart after a heart attack, a study claims.

The stimulant boosts a protein known to be important in regenerating heart cells, and which could also protect them from damage.

Caffeine is thought to lower the risk for diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke, but the reasons for this are not well understood.

German researchers now think caffeine may make cells which line the arteries and veins healthier, improving their ability to resist or recover from damage.

The scientists say their findings ‘should lead to better strategies for protecting heart muscle’, and another expert called the results ‘very interesting’.

Gov. Hogan: Md. National Guard resources removed from border until family separation stops

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (ABC7) — Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan says he will not deploy any of the state's National Guard resources to the border until the policy of separating undocumented immigrants from their children ends.

Hogan sent out a statement Tuesday saying that he recalled the Maryland National Guard crew members and helicopter from New Mexico amid growing public aversion to the policy.

Watch Out Worcester County, Liberal Attorney Joel Todd Is Back

Worcester County Residents experienced enough problems with Joel Todd in the past and in fact voted him out, (very rare) as States Attorney. Joel then ultimately went to Wicomico County which was also short lived. 

Now Kris Heiser is running for Worcester States Attorney and allegedly wants Joel Todd as her Deputy, (2nd in command). 

I'd say this is the kiss of death for her campaign. Remember, Todd was the one who mishandled the multiple baby death case  and the woman walked scott free. 

You better be careful what you wish for Worcester County, unless you do in fact want history to repeat itself. 

BREAKING NEWS: Worcester County Sheriff Reggie Mason Retaliates Against Sheriff Deputies

This just came out from fellow deputies: 

The FOP knew it was just a matter of time before there was retaliatory action from Sheriff Mason for not endorsing his candidate. 

Today Sheriff Mason announced that all secondary employment would cease. Now while this doesn't sound like a big deal to most it results in thousands of dollars in lost income to deputies who rely on that money to make ends meet for their families. When these deputies were recruited from other agencies they were told they could supplement their base salary with overtime through secondary employment. This offsets the loss of income from their previous employers to come to the Worcester County Sheriff's Office. 

This is also being done as retaliation against Leighton Moore the owner of Seacrets who supports Mike McDermott and hosted a fundraiser for him at his business. Mr. Moore is the largest employer of off duty Worcester County deputies. 

So people understand this is also a money-making adventure for the county. Every hour that is worked as secondary employment the business pays the county a flat rate which is far higher than the overtime rate and the county banks the surplus as an administrative fee. 

Strong work Sheriff. Glad you reinforced the fact that the FOP made the right choice. It's time to end the insanity.

Gay Democratic lawmaker flips Mike Pence the bird: 'Get bent, then get out'

An openly gay Pennsylvania lawmaker has drawn backlash after he “welcomed” Vice President Mike Pence toPhiladelphia with a picture of himself flipping the bird.

“Get bent, then get out!” state Rep. Brian Sims, of Philadelphia, wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday ahead of Mr. Pence’s visit to a fundraiser for Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Wagner.

“Vice President Mike Pence, let me be the first person to officially welcome you to the City of Brotherly Love, and to my District in the State House!” Mr. Sims wrote. “To be clear, we’re a City of soaring diversity. We believe in the power of all people to live and to contribute: Black, Brown, Queer, Trans, Atheist, Immigrant, we want you and we’ll respect you.”

“So keep that in mind while you’re here raising money to attack more families, spread more lies, blaspheme with your bible, and maybe even talk to a woman without your wife in the room,” he added. “We have plenty of them, and they’re pretty much all more powerful and more real than you have ever been.”

Md. Sen. Chris Van Hollen visits Mexican border on Father's Day

He is investigating the Trump Administration's policy of separating children from their families at the Mexican border.

“Everything that I saw today confirmed my worst fears,” Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen told WUSA 9 via FaceTime Sunday evening.

Instead of spending this Father’s Day with his own children, Van Hollen was one of eight lawmakers to tour a processing center in McAllen, Texas. He also visited a site near Brownsville, TX and tells WUSA 9 he spoke with an emotional mother currently separated from her child.

Why Van Hollen?

The Maryland Senator told WUSA 9 he had enough and wanted to investigate this policy of separating children for himself. Cameras were not allowed inside the facilities he toured, so he describes it for us.

“In that center, you had people sort-of huddled in these very large pens with chain-linked fence, including a lot of kids, masses of kids huddled together,” he said. The Senator says this facility had over 100 separated kids inside.

Van Hollen tells WUSA9 what he saw is the result of the Trump Administration’s “Zero Tolerance Policy.”

It’s a practice put in place last month to deter illegal border crossings.

The Administration is now criminally prosecuting the people caught crossing the border illegally, which means detention for the adults until they get a trial.

The result: separations.

They're All Over The Place In Salisbury, This Isn't Litter?

TRENTON — Krystal Knapp was 15 minutes from the end of her shift as a volunteer at the entrance to the Art All Night festival in Trenton when she heard some scuffling.

Peering into the long and narrow former factory building where the festival was being held, she saw paintings being knocked to the floor. She heard screams and gunshots as people hurtled toward the exit and she was pushed to the ground and trampled.

Ms. Knapp sought shelter behind a car. Then, 15 feet away, one of the gunmen was shot and killed.

The authorities said the shooting appeared to be gang-related and that 22 people were injured; 17 were shot and the others hurt by being trampled. It happened just before 3 a.m. Sunday at a 24-hour art festival cherished by Trenton residents as a testament to the New Jersey capital’s artistic revitalization.

Tensions were rising shortly before the event descended into violent chaos.

Car into the River in Salisbury near Market Street Inn

At approximately 1130 hours today, the Salisbury Fire Department was alerted for a reported vehicle in the river by Market St Inn. Units arrived to find a single vehicle in the river with confirmed occupant still inside. Divers were able to quickly attach a winch cable from Rescue 16 to keep the vehicle close to shore and from sinking any further. It took crews approximately 15 minutes to remove the combative patient from the vehicle with assistance from Salisbury PD. Patient was then transported to PRMC for further treatment.

An Indiana State Police officer is going viral on social media after posting that he had pulled over a woman for going too slow in the left lane.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles tweeted that the driver had approximately 20 cars slowed behind her because she would not move back to the right lane.

"Again...if there are vehicles behind you, you must move to the right lane to allow them to pass," Wheeles tweeted.

Republican Gov. Larry Hogan 'stronger than ever' in re-election bid in deep-blue Maryland

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is lapping the Democratic field at the close of the fundraising books ahead of the June 26 primaries, as he is sitting on close to $10 million in cash for his re-election bid compared with about $600,000 for his nearest potential competitors.

Since winning in a stunning upset in 2014, Mr. Hogan has consistently championed themes tied to jobs and economic growth, along with lower taxes and less government regulation after years of one-party Democratic rule in Maryland, to score eye-popping approval ratings that would be the envy of just about any other governor in the country.

Despite national anti-Republican headwinds and a crowded field of Democratic contenders eager to take him on after their primary contest next week, political handicappers are forecasting another Hogan win in the fall. That would make Mr. Hogan the first Republican governor in Maryland to win re-election in about 60 years.

He has the money to do it — at least so far — after raising about $1 million in the May 16 to June 10 period.

Delaware Gov. John Carney rejected a request to send National Guard members to the Mexican border area, citing the controversial policy of separating children from detained parents.

“I take my job as Commander-in-Chief of theDelaware National Guard. extremely seriously. In the last year, we’ve sent Guardsmen and women to Texas, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico to help our fellow citizens cope with natural disasters. We’ve sent Delaware Guardsmen and women overseas to keep us safe. I’m extremely proud of Delaware’s soldiers and airmen and women. Today, we received a request to send Delaware National Guard troops to the southwest border. Under normal circumstances,we wouldn’t hesitate to answer the call. But given what we know about the policies currently in effect at the border, I can’t in good conscience send Delawareans to help with that mission,” Carney stated.

Carney continued, “If President Trump revokes the current inhumane policy of separating children from their parents, Delaware will be first in line to assist our sister states in securing the border. I served in Congress, and I watched for six years as that body failed to pass a comprehensive immigration policy that would secure our borders in a way that upholds the values of this great country. Congress and the President need to step up and fix the mess that our immigration system has become.”

A horror plant that causes third-degree burns and permanent blindness has been spotted in Northern Virginia.

Officials are warning people to stay clear of the Giant Hogweed plant, which has never before been reported in the state.

The sap of the plant makes the skin so sensitive to sunlight that normal exposure can cause severe burns - a process called phytophotodermatitis.

A brush against the plant can result in painful blisters, permanent scarring and the skin can remain sensitive to sunlight for years after being exposed.

If the sap gets into the eyes, there is potential for blindness.

On Tuesday, 06/19/2018, a Police Officer received a Facebook Message from a female that they did not know, identified as Brittany Starns, 28 YOA from Salisbury Maryland. Starns immediately offered this officer sexual favors in return for money. This officer immediately notified the Seaford Police Criminal Investigations Division, who was able to continue a conversation with Brittany Starns. Brittany Starns agreed to come to Seaford and meet in the parking lot of a local restaurant on Sussex Highway. Detectives and officers set surveillance up on the restaurant and also maintained contact with Starns. When Starns arrived to the restaurant, she was immediately taken into custody. A male, identified as Kevin Gardenhour, 63 YOA from Salisbury Maryland, who was operating the suspect vehicle, was also taken into custody. During the investigation it was learned that Starns would engage in prostitution activities in which both she and Gardenhour would be benefiting from with the proceeds.
Starns was charged with prostitution, criminal solicitation and conspiracy 3rd degree.
Gardenhour was charged with promoting prostitution (felony), criminal solicitation and conspiracy 3rd degree.

DUI Conviction Rate

OCEAN CITY - On June 18, 2018, State’s Attorney’s Offices from every county in Maryland came together at the Clarion Hotel for the annual Maryland State’s Attorney’s Conference. In the presence of Governor Hogan, Worcester County was honored for having the highest DUI conviction rate in Maryland. Of the prior six years on record, five have been awarded to the Worcester County State’s Attorney’s Office. Furthermore, Worcester County exceeded the statewide average of 78% by achieving a 91.1% successful DUI conviction rate. 

“This is an incredible achievement for Worcester County,” Interim State’s Attorney Bill McDermott stated. “This award is a reflection of the diligent efforts of not only our devoted attorneys, but also the law enforcement involved in each one of these cases. Our officers tirelessly patrol the streets of this county and are thorough in their reports, which in turn provide our prosecutors with the tools they need to successfully convict drunk drivers.” 

He continued saying, “Earning the award for the highest DUI conviction rate not only this year but five out of the last six years is a testament to how seriously our office and law enforcement take the protection and security of our county. This award is not only an accomplishment for our office and law enforcement, it’s a win for Worcester County.” 

Interim State’s Attorney McDermott then offered his sincere congratulations to the district court prosecutors who handle the majority of DUI cases, as well as every law enforcement agency in Worcester County.
