Humane Society Cause For Paws Fundraiser

Wicomico County Humane Society's "Cause for Paws" fundraiser was held Sat, April 12, 2008. It is heart warming to see such great support from the community. The unofficial count for this event raised over $11,000. Let's keep up this generous support for the homeless animals of our community! Agreeing to Disagree

What happened to that?

I am fortunate to be able to watch HBO’s latest miniseries ‘John Adams’.

What a treat it has been, HBO has brought a human side to our Founding Fathers that history books have failed to do.

When I was home schooling my two oldest children, and we were studying American History and the Revolution, we had the opportunity to read many fantastic books on the subject. I was a little bit of an un-schooler in my teaching methods, but it worked quite well for our family. Whenever we would decide on a new subject to study we would go to the library, there we would check out every single book on the subject from the children’s, through juvenile to adult sections. We inevitably lugged home armfuls of books and began our study.
During this time we picked up a book that contained the correspondence between John Adams and his wife Abigail it was entitled ‘My Dearest Friend’.

John and Abigail Adams letters provide more historical documentation of the personalities of the cast of characters we call our Founding Fathers. They wrote each other constantly (over 1000 letters) and were very detailed in the happenings and emotions of what it was like to live in their day in the epicenter of the very founding of our nation. HBO has used these letters to create this mini-series.

Apparent from the very beginning of the series is the constant disagreement among the men who are now our national icons.

They disagreed about whether they should indeed declare independence. They disagreed on the structure of the new government they would form if they did declare Independence. They disagreed on the strength and size of a central federal government vs. the independence of each state to determine it’s own path according to it’s citizens. And from the very beginning they argued about southern farmers paying for the mistakes made on Wall Street.

Benjamin Franklin was a very skilled statesman and was very good at gauging a man’s personality and how to best convince individuals to his way of thinking. George Washington was an honored war hero who every one could agree would be an excellent leader, but once nominated and elected was a reluctant leader who was quickly dismayed at the division of ideas amongst his cabinet. Thomas Jefferson believed in absolute freedom no matter what, so long as it did not cost anyone other than oneself anything including harm. He believed so much in the inherent goodness of all people that if they were given absolute freedom without oppression they would prosper and do good. John Adams and Jefferson were dear friends, but disagreed on much. John was very pessimistic about human nature and believed the worst in people and while believed in freedom of country did not see eye to eye with Jefferson and believed that a federalized central government was imperative to a successful future.

Alexander Hamilton and Jefferson agreed on nothing, and Hamilton’s beliefs about establishing a central bank with a large debt merely months after our governments formation was so disheartening to Jefferson he resigned from President Washington's cabinet and went home. In a conversation with Adams about the wondrous beauty of our Constitution Jefferson said he didn’t know if it really was so wondrous, that while there were many good things about it, there were also very bad things about it and only time would tell what those would be. Thomas feared for our future because of the ability of a central government in a republic to become so corrupt. One of his most memorable quotes to Adams was “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

The common thread woven in the fiber of all of these men was their quest for liberty. They rarely agreed on the details, but each one of them dedicated so much of their lives doing what they felt was the right thing to do for our country.

Disagreement is not bad.

Disagreement is inevitable, and if we uphold each others rights to say what is on our minds and to do what is right, disagreement should not be something that we as Americans should shy away from.

So often in today’s society, people are belittled for saying what they believe, and discouraged in stating their beliefs. This I believe will be the downfall of our society.

Our founding fathers had no TV, they had books and they had ink, and they had each other to discuss the things that mattered to them and they educated each other in those things. If they did not agree they did what they could to educate the other further until they felt there was clear understanding of an issue and if they still did not agree, they agreed to disagree, because ‘free thought’ and individual liberty in all things was their common goal.

If you have the opportunity to see this series I highly recommend it. As with most HBO series they eventually come out on DVD and I encourage each one of you to watch it. The production and scenery is not only excellent but the humanity of each of these men is so present that you will never think of your Founding Fathers the same way again.

In closing, I would like to add; that in this day of mass media, it is very hard to find the whole truth of situation as every source puts their own self serving spin on issues at hand. So if you really want to be educated on a topic take the time to gather the information from a multitude of sources including those whom you may disagree with. If you only see the world through the eyes of CNN or Fox news you will doing yourself and your country a grave disservice. Even between the two of them you will hear differing stories so dig down check lots of different sources including those coming from the enemy’s camp and some where when you throw out all of the agenda’s you will be closer to the real truth of the matter.

In the meantime, time is marching on and we know not how many more breaths we get to take, so make the most of it and don’t be afraid to speak what you believe.

Rock The Hawk Works, Green 2 Goals, Ovechkin Game WInner

Verizon Center,

Mike Green scored 2 goals on the power of his and Capital fans' mohawks to tie the game up in third period to allow Alexander Ovechkin to score the winning goal over the Flyers in the first game of their playoff series. Green scored at the 1:50 and 6:26 mark in the third after Philly's Daniel Briere scored 2 and Vaclav Prospal added one of his own to make during the Second period.

Ovechkin on a strong forecheck on a Flyer's break-out was able to get Lasse Kukkonen to cough up the puck in ront of Martin Biron to get the eventual game winner. This was Ovechkin's first career NHL Playoff game and goal and added an assist on a Green goal.

Cristobal Huet had 18 saves in the win.

This is the first trip to the postseason for the Caps since the 2002-2003 season in which they lost the opening round to the Lightning 2-4.

The Capitals play Sunday at 2pm and the game will be aired on NBC.

SALISBURY — This will be my final Shore Politics entry.

I have received an offer from one of our sister papers in New Jersey, the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill. I start this week.

It’s been an honor serving the Lower Shore for the past two years. I’ve learned a great deal about watermen and rural living. I immensely respect these farmers and seafood savvy professionals who keep us fed.

I’m going to miss the touch of God this region sees. I don’t think I’ll ever be in the presence of so many breathtaking sunsets.

I’ll miss my colleagues and leaders. They all want to be a part of history and make the Lower Shore a better place.

What I won’t miss are the constant naysayers. The bitter, cranky, nearly-fanatical critics who won’t be happy until taxes are nil and anarchy is achieved.

I’ve attempted to find moderate voices throughout my reporting. But those citizens unafraid to talk openly about ideas, programs and projects which might serve a greater good are fewer every day. Those opposed to everything have too loud a megaphone. Appreciate critical perspectives, as long as they’re constructive.

I wish the region’s leaders luck. There are many serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. Recognize who is, and is not, to be taken seriously.

Under The Lights

There's something about playing under the lights.

The Gulls put on a special dominating performance beating St. Mary's 23-4 in their regular season finale. The Seagulls are now 14-0 overall and 7-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Senior Matt Hickman scored 7 of the Salisbury's first 13 goals in the first half and played like he was unstoppable.

Salisbury will be entering the C.A.C. Tournament once again as the top seed against Hood College Monday, April 14th at Seagull Stadium.

The win puts Salisbury at 67-0 since 2003 while playing at home and they have never not won a C.A.C. Championship since joining the conference. A total of 13 titles have been won and are 96-0 versus conference foes. The Gulls also has not lost a game since the start of last season in which they won the National Championship. Their overall winning streak is up to 37.

A VIEW FROM THE WEST: Tavis Leaves Tom

In a move that should of happened ages ago in my opinion, Tavis Smiley has seen the light. This June, he will be departing from the Tom Joyner Morning Show (heard in Delmarva on WSBY 98.9FM.) In The Washington Post this morning, Tavis said (in a nutshell) that he is leaving because he has a lot going on. Now, this is where us media people can more than likely call out the BS in this. The same article said that good ol' Tommy Boy went on his blog and said "The real reason is that he can't take the hate he's been getting regarding the Barack issue -- hate from the black people that he loves so much." Yeah, way to spin a smack into a positive.

In case you missed that, I thought Tommy Boy's comment on his blog was a back handed slap to a guy who has been dedicated to a program for 11 years. I'm going to take this one step at a time, because I have a lot to say on this one. I am first going to start out by saying that for starters, I always thought that Tavis Smiley was WAY too good for Tom Joyner. Keep in mind that Tavis is on the opposite end of the spectrum, but he provides a fair shake on his commentaries and when he is interviewing people. He cannot be lumped in with the likes of Joyner or Sharpton or every other Black liberal that is way out there. He actually cause you to think and go 'yeah' or 'ok, but...."

A true show of Tavis' character came during the time when BET was under fire (and rightfully so). The issue was going to be discussed on BET Tonight, which Tavis hosted in the late 90s...but it wasn't Tavis hosting, is was the "Black Eagle" Joe Madison with one of Robert Johnson's cronies as a guest. I have the suspicion that Tavis wanted no part of that broadcast that night. When BET fired him, Tavis blew up! He was everywhere, including a guest host spot on CNN's "Talkback Live." Now, he has a show on PBS that is so popular, ALL THREE PBS stations that we get here in Central Maryland airs the program (including Maryland Public Television.)

Tavis has broad appeal, as opposed to Tom Joyner. I am not going to hold back on Joyner when I say is a hack poverty pimp supporter. Excuse me while I ask publicly why in the world would he spend money on kids to only attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities? I thought the whole point of the civil rights era was to give kids an equal opportunity at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, UMCP and other schools that are majority white.

This is the point that I brought up to my sister, Brooke, one day about Joyner paying money for Black kids to go to college. For argument sake, there is a family mom, dad and two kids who started out living in a rough Southeast Washington neighborhood. They're doing well, but they want a better life for their kids. They move to the suburbs, either in Maryland or Virginia. Mom and dad knows that the cost of living would be higher than their current neighborhood, but they do not want to see their kids fall to the peer pressure to do negative stuff. So they move to the burbs, they kids work hard with the oldest kids nailing the scoreboard (academically) in his senior year when he finds out that he just got accepted to an Ivy League school. Mom and dad who regularly listens to Tom Joyner thinks this is freaking great and rightfully so. They look into the scholarship program Joyner always talks about and they find out, they have to send their kid to an HBCU? What do they tell that kid?

I admit that is a far reaching scenario because the family can simply apply to any scholarship that could help them and problem solved, but for Joyner to close it off to just kids attending HBCU's is ignorant, especially since that was the whole point of the civil rights movement so our generation can have an equal opportunity to attend any school we want. I should also note that I have nothing against HBCU's, just Tom Joyner. Whether it's a black or white school, the piece of paper is the same. When you face the real world, brains, behavior and the execution of common sense will be tested rather than brains alone.

Which now leads me to Joyner's audience which comprises of "The Secret Order of Black People." For those unfamiliar, this is the group that I created in the last year and a half to describe those who think that one black person speaks for all black people. A group of people who do not want the dirty laundry of black people out on display, despite the fact that it has been seen by everyone in the world. This is the group that came out against the Hot Ghetto Mess TV show on BET, BET in general and defended Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Vivian Stringer for throwing a good ol' 60s style party during the Imus flap last year.

Tavis struck a nerve with this bunch that caused such a backlash. He said the "a" word....accountability. From The Post: "Don't fall so madly in love [with Obama] that you surrender your power to hold people accountable. . . . I'm not saying overlook Senator Obama, but you now better be ready to look him over." I don't find anything wrong with this. ALL people running for office should be looked over and held accountable, they should not get a pass on any grounds. But still, the secret order was upset and expressed their outrage against Smiley. I do disagree with a later comment from Smiley about Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) not being attentive to Black issues (due to the fact that I believe that Obama has to run for President of America and not Black America.)

Whether Tavisis leaving because of his heavy workload or because Tommy Boy pissed him off one to many times, he made the right decision. I also have to give credit to Tavis for holding to his convictions, as opposed to a particular audience.

Autism Awareness Night w/ Tippy Martinez

This Saturday & Sunday is Autism Awareness Weekend at the ball park. On Saturday evening there will be a special player hat auction and other silent auctions throughout the game to help raise money for the Autism Chapter of the Eastern Shore. Following the game is a Froggy 99.9 FIREWORKS Extravaganza! Special guest and Oriole Great TIPPY MARTINEZ will be on hand to show his support and will be available for pictures and autographs. Game time is 7:05pm on Saturday.

Sunday's game is a 2:05pm start time and is another chance for you to show your support. Tickets to both games start as low as $6! Saturday FIREWORKS!

This Saturday is the 2nd of Four "Hit the Books" games presented by the Sylvan Learning Center. That evening we will be honoring students from Worcester, Somerset and Dorchester Counties who completed this year's Hit the Books Reading program. All attending students will participate in a pregame parade around the field and following the game there will be a Froggy 99.9 FIREWORKS EXTRAVAGANZA! We're getting ready to start the game. Returning from their road trip where the Shorebirds won only one game and lost two. Hopefully tonight we'll see some great playing.

Lakewood is 3-4 for the season while the Shorebirds are 2-4. The players have taken the field and we're moments away from the start.

The Shorebirds are at bat, Angle walked and then stole second. Davis Cash just struck out and now Tyler Henson is up with one out. With a sacrifice fly and a man on 1st & 3rd, the runner from 3rd scores on a close play at the plate. The runner on 1st stole second. We're 1-0 with the inning coming to a close.

Top of the 2nd with the first batter striking out. Two down. Lakewood hits a double with a beautiful hit down the 1st base line. 3 down and we're in the bottom of the 2nd, Shorebirds 1, Lakewood 0.

That was quick. Shorebirds went 3 up, 3 down and we're now in the top of the 3rd, 1-0 Shorebirds. Lakewood starts off with a lead off double. Runner on second moved to third while the batter grounds out. One out and a man on third. RBI Grounder. Man from 3rd scores with 2 outs. score 1-1. Taylor smacks the ball right between the pitchers legs and Taylor easily gets a base hit. There's talking with the pitcher and we're back to playing ball. Ground ball and they tag second base, inning over. Lakewood 1, Shorebirds 1. Bottom of the 3rd, Matt Tucker starts off with a base hit. Pop up bunt, one out. Tucker tries to steal 2nd and is tagged out. Cash pops an infield fly, the inning is over.

We're in the top of the 4th, 3 up, 3 down, we're now in the bottom of the 4th, Shorebirds are up. So much for that, the inning is over, no score and we're heading into the top of the 5th. The most exciting part of the 4th inning was a foul ball that hit the upper deck wall and bounced back down towards the general admission seats and believe it or not went right into a trash can. I'll deliver photos later showing several kids with their heads inside the trash can looking for the ball.

Three up, three down. We're heading into the bottom of the 5th. We've got two outs but we also have a man on 1st & 2nd. 3 outs and the inning is over. Top of the 6th is over without any real excitement. 3 up, 3 down, the 6th inning is over, the score remains 1-1

OK, things are getting exciting now. The Shorebirds are up in the bottom of the bottom of the 7th and the Shorebirds have scored, man on second, one out! OK, Shorebirds have scored another run on an error and once again we have a man on second! 3-1 Shorebirds. Orioles are up 5-2 against Tampa Bay.

Catcher George Wolf who was hit in the head last week by a pitch came in the following day with slurred speech and they sent him off to Baltimore, Shock Trauma. OK, we're through 8 innings with the score still 3-1 Shorebirds.

ONE down. Two more outs and this game is over! 2 down, one out to go. Tonights attendance, 2,412. This Game Is Over! Shorebirds 3, Lakewood, 1!

Sherrell Marie Walker 17YOA Salisbury, Maryland

On 4-10-08 the WCSO was called into the 200 Block of Dove Street for a reported assault. Upon arrival Deputies met with a male victim with a laceration to his hand. It was determined the suspect Sherrell Walker attempted to stab Walker with a kitchen knife.

After locating the suspect, Walker was arrested on the felony charge. Because of the severity of the charge, Walker was arrested as an adult and taken to the Central Booking Unit at the Wicomico County Detention Center. Walker is being held on a $25,000 Bond.

I just took this photo seconds ago in our pond out front. We have stocked our ponds with Gold Fish and this Great Blue Heron has a field day coming in every day, several times a day for a meal. Today, he became my target. I was determined to catch this guy catching one of them and this time I did. Enjoy!

Yesterday's Daily Times Article

Although we were honored to have The Daily Times actually place our direct Website Address in their article, honest to God, we had a zero increase in hits yesterday.

One of two things has happened. Either no one cares about this lawsuit between Chief Webster against me or we've completely saturated the market. My guess, it's a little of both.

One of the main reasons I didn't place links to the Daily Times, (truth be told) is because it takes so long on Dial Up to get to their site, (10 minutes for the home page and then an additional 5 minutes for every page thereafter) I'm just not going to take the time to wait.

Anyhow, I thought you might find it interesting that we didn't see a spike upwards from their placing our address within the article. However, I am very grateful for their putting it in there.

On April 8, 2008 at approximately 11:42 am, Officers of the Salisbury Police received a call to respond to a residence on the six hundred block of Baker St. for the report of a home invasion type robbery. Upon arrival, Officers were advised by the victim that minutes prior, two (2) suspects had forced their way into his residence and had take U.S. currency from the victim at gunpoint. The victim was able to provide a description of the suspects and approximately 45 minutes later, the below listed suspect was located in the area of the robbery and was identified by the victim as one of the suspects. The investigation is continuing as to the second suspect.

Master Card Wedding

You got to love this guy... This is a true story about a recent wedding that took place at Clemson University . It was in the local newspaper and even Jay Leno mentioned it. It was a huge wedding with about 300 guests..

After the wedding, at the reception, the groom got up on stage with a microphone to talk to the crowd. He said he wanted to thank everyone for coming, many from long distances, to support them at their wedding.

He especially wanted to thank the bride's and his family and to thank his new father-in-law for providing such a lavish reception.

As a token of his deep appreciation he said he wanted to give everyone a special gift just from him.

So taped to the bottom of everyone's chair, including the wedding party was an envelope.

He said this was his gift to everyone, and asked them to open their envelope.

Inside each manila envelope was an 8x10 glossy of his bride having sex with the best man.

The groom had gotten suspicious of them weeks earlier and had hired a private detective to tail them. For a couple of minutes, he turned to the best man and
said, "F---you!" Then he turned to his bride and said, "F--- you!"

Then he turned to the dumbfounded crowd and said, "I'm outta here."

He had the marriage annulled first thing in the morning.

While most people would have canceled the wedding immediately after finding out
about the affair, this guy goes through with the charade, as if nothing were wrong.

His revenge--making the bride's parents pay over $32,000 for a 300-guest wedding and reception, and best of all, trashing the bride's and best man's reputations in front of 300 friends and family member s.

This guy has ba{{s the size of church bells.

What About The Homeless?

Just what would YOU do if a homeless person came into your meeting and started crying, saying she's homeless and hadn't eaten all day, in front of a packed house?

Well, if it were Barrie Tilghman she'd say, We'll get back to you on that one. John, (Pick) take her name and address and send her a letter.

Actually, I was very proud of Rick Pollitt last night. He stood the entire time fielding questions from the audience. Some good, some bad and some heartbreaking. The woman in the wheelchair wasn't the only sad story there.

Nevertheless, most had their hands out pleading for more and or continued support and I'm just going to be very frank here Ladies & Gentlemen. If YOU haven't put two and two together recognizing we're in probably the most difficult economy 95 % of us have ever experienced, go see a doctor because you've got issues.

I personally thought it was a sad display of department heads, (for the most part) wanting more, mainly the Board of Education. Cut back, quit acting like we're in Rockville and cut the BS!

The County Executive will probably reach into the County's pocket first for the homeless woman because you know what, it hit her first and it hit her the hardest. Now if any of the rest of you crybabies finally hit ROCK BOTTOM, then is the time to plead your case. Till then, Wah, Wah, Wah!

Pittsville Fundraiser A Huge Success.

While Salisbury News brought in about 25% of the overall crowd to this fundraiser, around $3,000.00 was raised in one night. Much of the thanks has to go out to Todd Wampler, (owner of Station 7) and Doug Marshall who sponsored the event. $3,000.00 isn't chump change, especially in this economy. So why was this such a huge success? TURNOUT! The restaurant was packed the entire time. The very first hour of the event there was no more seating upstairs and downstairs was filling up fast.

It looks like Station 7 is the perfect place for these kind of events and let me tell you Ladies & Gentlemen, we ALL ate there and the food was fantastic, AGAIN! Give it a shot. If you haven't been there yet, try it, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Doug Marshall & Pete Richardson Together?

While in Pittsville the other night I happened to notice Auctioneers Doug Marshall and Pete Richardson sitting at the same table and ultimately having drinks together. I said to myself, Self, what's up with that?

It turns out these guys were at the Fundraiser for a Maryland State Trooper's Son who is battling cancer and they were together to fight a bigger cause. I guess that would be like seeing Joe Albero and Bill Duvall sitting at the same table buying each other Shirley Temples, NOT! LOL

I CAN'T TAKE IT ANY MORE

Salisbury Police Officers have had enough. Their Chiefy has made a fool out of them by suing me, a local Blogger, for calling him Chief Jack & Coke. Well, I wasn't the one who started calling him that name but that's OK, I'll resolve that one in Court. The big question is, will Snow Hill take these defecting Officers?

POLLITT TO KICK OFF FIRST PHASE OF REVISION TO COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

April 10, 2008

Wicomico County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr., will hold a news conference to announce the consultant selected to assist the County in the preparation of the Water Resources Element, which is to be included in the update of the Wicomico County Comprehensive Plan. The news conference is scheduled on Monday, April 14, 2008, beginning at 2:00 P.M., Room 301, Council Chambers, Government Office Building, Salisbury, Maryland. The public is invited.

During the 2006 campaign and in his inaugural address, Mr. Pollitt emphasized the importance of updating the County Comprehensive Plan. As part of the Comprehensive Plan update, the Water Resources Element will address the following questions:

1. Is there adequate water supply to meet current and future needs?
2. Is there adequate wastewater and septic supply to meet current and future needs?
3. Identify suitable receiving waters and land areas to meet the storm water management needs of the areas?
4. What, if any, impact will meeting these needs have on water resources?

Mr. Pollitt will introduce the consultant selected to assist the County in the preparation of the Water Resources Element. Following that, there will be a brief presentation on the scope of work required to complete this task and the proposed public participation plan.

Young Republicans Meeting Tonight

Tonight at 7pm in the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce building there will be a Lower Shore Young Republican Club Meeting. The meetings have been changed from the 4th Thursday to the 2nd Thursday of every month. Anyone from the ages of 18-40 are cordially invited to attend. Social hour will follow.

Fog Causes Accident In Ocean City

Moments ago, fog caused an accident in front of the Carousel on Coastal Highway in Ocean City. The fog also caused school delays throughout the Eastern Shore.

Does the Shield Law Apply?

Struggling to retain some accuracy while sacrificing the truth, the Daily Times seems to be quite pleased that Worcester County District Court Judge Gerald Purnell has ruled that Maryland's press shield law doesn't apply to blogger Joe Albero. When was the last time the paper covered a civil motions hearing?

Before we go farther we need to remember something. Yesterday's hearing in Snow Hill was simply a motions hearing. Salisbury Police Chief Allan Webster has yet to produce any evidence in court that Albero libeled him. Given that Webster has already been determined to be a public figure, his burden of proof is near impossible. IF Webster's case finally does come to trial this summer he must prove that Albero's statements were not true, that Albero knew that they were untrue AND that he still published the statements with malice. A tough nut to crack.

Back to the local barracks of the Gannett army. It is my understanding of Judge Purnell's ruling that Albero was found not to be protected by the press shield law because Albero is not paid. IF Albero had offered evidence of earning revenue from Salisbury News (which he actually was at the time Webster claims that he was libeled), it appears that the shield law would have applied. This really doesn't matter anyway because Judge Purnell ruled (based on another point) that Albero did not have to disclose the names of sources, which is the point of the press shield law.

Was this covered in Joe Gidjunis' article? No. Instead Mr. Gidjunis follows his lead about the shield law not applying with a statement that "Judge Gerald Purnell decided Albero must explain the steps he took to verify the accuracy of content that Webster claimed defamed him."

I have news for Gidjunis and his superiors at the Daily Times. If Mr. Gidjunis were sued for libel he would have to explain the steps that he took to verify the accuracy of his reporting, or face losing the case. Does anyone question whether the press shield law applies to Mr. Gidjunis? Of course not. It just suits the Daily Times' agenda to compare apples to oranges.

I can only hope that the Daily Times will provide such prominent coverage to the actual trial. It would also serve the public interest for them to inquire into who is actually paying the legal bills for this little charade. If Webster can afford to expend tens of thousands of dollars to go after Albero, perhaps the taxpayers of Salisbury are paying him too much. If the taxpayers are footing the bill (without any appropriation for the funds) then some people deserve to go to jail. Oh, who am I kidding!

Dog Owners And Breeders Advised To Keep Dogs Safe At Home And On The Road

The American Kennel Club® is warning pet owners and breeders about an alarming rise in dog thefts in recent months. From parking lots to pet stores and even backyards, more dogs are disappearing. In the first three months of 2008, the AKC has tracked more than 30 thefts from news and customer reports, versus only ten for all twelve months of 2007.

Media reports have chronicled the escalation of these "dog-nappings" from all around the country. Incidents have included armed robbers entering a breeder's home, tiny puppies being stuffed into purses at pet stores and most recently, purebred pets being snatched from cars in parking lots and even shelters.

"The value of pets in people's lives has been on the rise for a long time and now we are seeing thieves trying to capitalize on this. Whether they seek to resell the dog, collect a ransom or breed the dogs and sell their offspring, thieves seem to be attuned to the increased financial and emotional value pets have in our lives," said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "Losing a treasured family pet is devastating to the owner."

"Criminals look for weaknesses and exploit them. They know pets can't protect themselves, so that means owners need to be alert," said Lt. John Kerwick, a law enforcement K-9 handler and the President of the U.S. Police Canine Association, Region 7. "Be wary of anyone who approaches you and asks too many questions about your dog or where you live. This is a red flag that they may be out to snatch your pet."

Peterson added that "These 'dog-nappers' are misguided and naïve. They're stealing living beings, not jewelry that can be pawned. Plus, it's unlikely that they can sell the dogs for high prices without proper registration papers, and these inept criminals are not realistically going to collect a ransom. Caring for a dog -- and especially breeding -- is a time consuming endeavor that requires a lot of knowledge. Thieves will find themselves with a frightened and confused animal that needs a lot of care."

The AKC offers the following advice to prevent your "best friend" from being a target of a crime:

At Home

Don't let your dog off-leash — Keeping your dog close to you reduces the likelihood it will wander off and catch the attention of thieves. A Saint Bernard that had wandered away from his owner in Nebraska was snatched up right off the road.

Don't leave your dog unattended in your yard — Dogs left outdoors when no one is home for long periods of time can be potential targets, especially if you live in a rural area and the fenced-in yard or dog runs are visible from the street.

Keep purchase price to yourself — If strangers approach you to admire your dog during walks, don't answer questions about how much the dog cost or give details about where you live.

Breeders need to be aware of home visits by potential puppy buyers — Criminals posing as would be "puppy buyers" have visited breeder homes to snatch dogs, while other homes have been burglarized when the owner was away. From Yorkies in Los Angeles to Bulldogs in Connecticut, thieves have targeted young puppies of these highly coveted breeds.

On the Road
Never leave your dog in an unattended car, even if it's locked — Even if you are gone for only a moment, an unlocked car is an invitation for trouble. Also leaving expensive items in the car such as a GPS unit or laptop will only invite thieves to break and possibly allow the dog to escape.
Don't tie your dog outside a store — This popular practice among city dwelling dog owners can be a recipe for disaster. Reports have surfaced of such thefts in Manhattan. If you need to go shopping, patronize only dog-friendly retailers or leave the dog at home.

Be vigilant when entering or leaving establishments or venues catering to dogs such as grooming salons, veterinarians, doggie day care or hotels — Be aware of your surroundings, such as slow moving vehicles, or people watching you and your dog. Carry pepper spray as a precaution and, if possible, don't walk alone late at night or stay in a well lit area.

Recovery
Protect your dog with microchip identification — Collars and tags can be removed so make sure you have permanent ID with a microchip. Keep contact information current with your recovery service provider. Several pets have been recovered because of alert people scanning and discovering microchips. If you suspect your dog has been stolen — Immediately call the police / animal control in the area your pet was last seen.

Have fliers with a recent photo ready to go if your dog goes missing — Keep a photo of your dog in your wallet or on an easily accessible web account so that you can distribute immediately if your pet goes missing.

Fernando & Hal Called This Morning

I was pleased to get a call this morning at 7:51 by Hal and Fernando asking what I thought of the fight?

I responded with, people were calling me throughout the fight, many of them women who had never seen a boxing match and or women who hadn't watched boxing in many years, they were hooked!

Hal said, "the win is great, the knock out is great but everyone watching, now that was great!" They're so excited and please so many took the time to watch the bout. Oh, the names Fernando was shouting out at the end of the match, those were the believers and supporters Fernando has enjoyed along the way but more importantly, Fernando was yelling out ALL of the 9 year olds names from the Gym.

When I spoke with Fernando he simply said, "I'm just ready for my next fight on the 26th in Mississippi." He said, "Joe, did you see the main event?" I replied, no, YOU WERE THE MAIN EVENT!

The big brouhaha over the Absolut Vodka ads depicting parts of the Southwest US on the map as part of Mexico is puzzling to me. Apparently it pisses off people on both sides of the fence (no pun intended) because most Mexicans still feel like they were robbed when the US claimed those territories formerly belonging to their country.Americans are mad because they feel parts of America are already controlled by Mexicans. Tit for tat. (We took a couple of states from them , now they are invading every one of ours,but I digress)

So what does a stupid vodka ad (one that was NEVER meant for the US market in the 1st place) have to do with immigration? Vin & Sprit, the holders of the Absolut brand,have mounted way more potentially controversial Absolut ads in the past, particularly the anti-war ad among others.

Pernod Ricard SA , a French distilled spirit giant,is buying out V&S and aside from Absolut, has exclusive distribution rights to numerous other popular liquor brands sold worldwide. Does Michelle Malkin and the rest of her ilk really think a boycott is going to hurt them in any way?

People are NOT going to stop buying Absolut. Personally I dislike ANY vodka-it tastes like rubbing alcohol to me and I cannot differentiate top shelf stuff (like Absolut or Goose) from the cheap rail stuff, nevertheless ALOT of people consume vodka and many of them prefer the Swedish-made Absolut over any other (which brings me to a curious question-what do Swedes know about vodka?I thought it was a Russian thing!).

If anyone else can figure out what all the hullabaloo is about, please clue me in.Until then,I doubt the marketing dept. at V&S is losing sleep-in fact, all this media attention may even increase their sales worldwide.
