Americans Face a Rising Risk of Dying Alone

Loneliness kills. Life without friends and family is not just dreary but difficult, especially as we get older.

Strong social relationships boost a person’s chances of staying alive by 50 percent, according to a comprehensive 2010 review of 148 studies that followed 309,000 people for an average of 7.5 years. That’s about the same improvement to mortality as the one that comes from quitting smoking.

It’s hard to say whether Americans are lonelier now than in the past. But they’re certainly more independent than ever. Almost half of U.S. adults are now single. Americans are waiting longer to get married, they’re having smaller families, and about half of all marriages still end in divorce.

This article is crap.

I have an older friend who lives in Florida and they have an abundance of services to help the elderly most at no cost. They also have circles of friends who support each other.

I was struck at the stark difference between the ignorant selfish people here vs the loving helpful people there.

It's a whole 'nother world once you get out of the outhouse of the eastern shore.

Sorry but social media has significantly destroyed relationships..between cheating, politics and comments made by people we have had many people separate themselves from others. When I was little my mama's house was social center, everyone visited and met up there. Now the family mostly communicates on FB or txt messenger. It so sad because I loved seeing everyone and sitting at the table and talking. But now it's all a scattered mess. Everyone is moving in that direction, also the destruction of holidays and no one working on holidays is destroying family traditions and bonds.Everyone knew they would see each other on Christmas or thanksgiving or Easter. Now we are working on those days or the day before and after, leaving no travel time or family time.some people have vacation, but many low paid jobs make it impossible to leave work.

I'm older, I live alone and I'm feeling the best that I have since I was in my 20's.

Wasted money for this "study"

I would rather die alone. I have given all my money to charities. I don't want and bunch of family buzzards hanging around. Stinking up my final hours.

7:28 PM nothing like someone who hasn't bothered to see you in 10 years suddenly showing up to say hi.

So glad she left in 2000! The peace in the house is deafening, and the kids have gone their way but one, and we're best friends! He'll get out there soon, and leave the doggie here and I'll be fine. If I ever get "alone", I get in the truck and go somewhere.

What are you talking about? I LOVE my life!

I hope they find my body soon after I die, or years later, after my body has mummified. I hate to think that someone has to come and get my stinking, half decomposed body out of the house. They say that smell never goes away. But what the hey, I'll be dead, and not really caring about the living anymore.

I really don't need anybody to watch me die. I prefer to die alone. It's personal, the most personal thing we'll ever do. If you are at peace with your life, there is nothing to fear.
