**Update-Bicyclist Succumbs to Injuries** State Police Investigating Serious Crash Involving Bicyclist

by Master Corporal Gary Fournier

Milford – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist that occurred early Thursday morning.

Preliminary investigation reveals the incident occurred around 7:35 a.m. Thursday September 7, 2017 when Thomas H. Draper, 76 of Milford, was bicycling eastbound on Slaughter Beach Road in the area of Wells Road when he was struck by a 2013 Ford F150 pickup truck operated by Shawn E. Armstrong, 37 of Lewes, who was also traveling eastbound on Slaughter Beach Road. The pickup truck stopped immediately after the collision and called 9-1-1.

Thomas Draper was initially transported to Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Baltimore Shock Trauma in critical condition. At approximately 2:37 a.m. Friday September 8, 2017, Thomas Draper died as a result of his injuries.

Shawn Armstrong was uninjured in the collision.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Drug and alcohol use do not appear to be a factor in this case. No charges have been filed at this time. Slaughter Beach Road was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

This is sad, but it reminds me of my mom's wisdom when she said that my brother and I could not use out bikes on any major streets (which she designated for us and included that in front of the house).

Those bike lanes in Salisbury, especially S. Salisbury Boulevard near the college, are a fatality waiting to happen.

I agree totally with 12:41...this was NOT a smart move under any circumstances. Very dangerous.

Sorry for the family's loss, and to the employees of WBOC-TV as well.

Let me say this. A lot of very cold folks have made comments on here (7:15). I am sorry I didn't know Mr. Draper. His news station may be liberal but I didn't see that in the owner. I watched Mr. Draper be a guess on the talk show that use to be on in the morning with people calling in. Sorry I don't recall the male and female's names, but I thought they did a nice job. The male host was conservative while the female may have been on the liberal side. Point is, after seeing Mr. Draper on several times I did not see liberal in him. I found him to talk like a conservative. He seemed like a guy this conservative would enjoy seating down talking to. Sorry for the loss of Mr. Draper.

I don't know if anyone caught it but DelmarvaLife did a whole segment on biking to promote the Kent county "Amish country bike tour", I think it was the day after Tom was hit. They said in their story that riding on the sidewalk is dangerous and you should instead ride in a bike lane or the center of the car lane. I bike a lot, but I would never use a bike lane or ride in the center of the traffic lane if there is a sidewalk with little to no pedestrian traffic. I just don't trust drivers to be paying attention.
