MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The Cumberland Valley School District will keep students indoors for afternoon recess during next week’s partial solar eclipse.
In a letter to parents, school administrators said the decision was made after consulting with the district physician.
“While we recognize that the opportunity to view an eclipse is a rare occurrence, our number one priority is the health, safety, and well being of our students and staff,” the letter states. “There are possible hazards associated with exposure to potentially harmful rays during the partial eclipse.”
NASA says the only safe way to look directly at the partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or hand-held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe.

Actually sounds like good call because kids will be kids and if they look without proper eye protection they could end up with vision problems. PA is north of main event but still makes some sense.
This is a safety measure, because it is real easy to loose black students in the dark. (unless they smile)
Once in their lifetime event, and the "teachers" can't teach the proper way to view with simple cardboard boxes and tinfoil.

Actually, SEVERAL school districts are doing this. Imagine this.....
Little 8 year old Jimmie is allowed to go out during recess during the eclipse. Even though Little JImmie's teach did the right thing and taught him to NOT look at it without protecting his eye, he does anyway and now suffers from vision problems. Will Little JImmie get in trouble by mom and dad? No, because LIttle Jimmie's parents are idiots and think that they "perfect little angel" should NEVER be corrected. So, what does mommy and daddy do? They sue the school district (CV is a very wealthy school district). So, because the school district is getting sued, what happens to the teacher? They get fired for poor performance.
Should the teachers risk loosing their means of income because Little Jimmie's parents are um....well, IDIOTS???????? I don't think so...
More power to our teachers.. Next to our police, they have the toughest job with the least amount of thanks in the world.
Stadium 16 (locally) and theaters nationwide are missing out on yet another opportunity by not putting it in at least one theater per complex.For a small amount it could be viewed comfortably and safely.NASA would be more than happy to make it available.Do I have to think of everything?

2050. Only 33 years away. Are you armoire on or what? Who's going to provide the proper glasses? Taxpayers? Would you be the one complaining if schools spent thousands of dollars on this? Do you actually have kids? You know how many would just look up at the sun without the glasses? This is an extremely dangerous event and can burn your retinas any matter of seconds. If there was a hurricane or tornado coming should the schools let kids go out and watch it?
