DNA tests prove suspected wolf hybrid Capone is just a dog

AURORA, Colo. -- The family fighting to get their pet back from Aurora Animal Control says DNA tests prove their dog is not a wolf hybrid.

"We got some good news last night," Tracy Abbato said Sunday. "Capone is not wolf at all. He doesn't have an ounce of wolf in him."

The FOX31 Problem Solvers were first to report the case, which has made headlines around the world.

The Abbato family adopted Capone from the Adams County Animal Shelter 10 years ago. Shelter officials had classified him as a German shepherd mix. The family's veterinarian said the same thing.

??? All dogs are descendants of wolves.

3:09 That is correct, similar to the way we are descendants of apes. Dogs and wolves parted evolutionary ways anywhere from 9,000 to 35,000 years ago. We can analyze how related species are using their genes. The common ancestor of wolves and dogs (what the branched off from) has long been extinct. So by looking at this animals DNA they found that it did not in fact share DNA with a wolf.

Remember, 50% of human DNA is identical to that of a banana.

Some people in this area share more DNA with a tomato plant than a banana.
