Maryland Well-Represented In New African American Museum

WASHINGTON (AP) — Although the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture opens Saturday in the heart of Washington, its neighboring state of Maryland has a strong presence.

From a freed slave house in Montgomery County to photographs of Baltimore’s unrest after Freddie Gray’s death, Maryland’s black experience throughout history is broadly represented. According to the museum’s online collection, Maryland was in the top 15 states with the most artifacts.

Artifacts from Maryland on display include an early 1800s stone slave auction block from Hagerstown, a paper cutter from the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper and a copy of the book “This Child’s Gonna Live” by Maryland-born Sarah E. Wright, who portrayed the lives of a black family set by the state’s Eastern Shore.

Paul Gardullo, a curator at the museum, said it’s crucial to reflect the “deeply important” history of Maryland to African-American life.

Where is the confederate museum.

There are over 150 "African American" museums in this country. And taxpayers are tapped for funds to build yet another one.

Enough, already.

What I do not understand is we are putting this up for African Americans while they and other Democrats are telling us we have to take down our history because we are "offending them". WTH???????

"Baltimore’s unrest after Freddie Gray’s death" is exhibited. I certainly home they include Mosby and her lies such as her office did a "parallel investigation" with the sheriff's dept and the knife was legal and the driver took Gray on a rough ride. There are more they can include. If it's really history they are after then they need to be honest (for once) and include Mosby's lies.

At least it doesn't need much room.

I don't have a problem with this at all but as said above be honest about it and especially when it comes to Mosby lies. It's time the black community starts getting some honesty about them. Just heard on the news a shooting in Baltimore-8 victim. But them black lives matter! What a joke.

Do they have a place for kids to burn a car and rob someone? With out a doubt it's part of history.

Freddie gray rammed is head into side of van while on drugs and drunk. While healing from spine surgery. Proven in court. Why on earth is he being honored. Write history to be a victom even if it's fiction.

We were in DC a month or so ago, everyone commented on just how God awful this building was. We did not know at the time what is was going to be. There were no signs that we could see. It looks very out of place in the mall. Truth be told it is heinous!!

Right, and I am offended that they are taking my history down. My ancestors were here first. My ancestors were the first slaves. The Irish-Americans were the first slaves that know one seems to remember. Oh that's right because they want you to think we were known by a softer name, indentured servants.

I was thinking the same thing. Washington D.C. is a historic area and they build a structure like that? Who approved the funding for this? What Bill did they sneak this through on?
