Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand late Wednesday said the suspect, identified as Jerman Neveaux, was later apprehended and admitted to shooting Detective David F. Michel Jr. The sheriff said Neveaux was on probation for a previous crime and didn’t want to go to jail if Michel found the weapon he was carrying.
“So he killed the deputy,” Normand said. “What do you say about that?”
The sheriff said the officer had noticed Neveaux walking behind another person who appeared to be nervous, so he pulled over. Michel approached Neveaux and placed him up against the police vehicle so he could search him, Normand said. But Neveaux flipped around, “went chest to chest” with the officer, pulled out a gun and shot him in the back.
“As Detective Michel fell to the ground, he fired two more shots at point-blank range into the back of Detective Michel,” Normand said.

I say the cop should've waited for back up! Someone to cover his back while his eyes were occupied! He didn't kill himself but he didn't help himself either! Again I say if cops did there jobs correctly then alot of their murders could be prevented! For instance.... cops ambushed while sitting in their cars. I'd they were patrolling I.e. riding around,instead of parked , then alot harder to be killed.
It looks to me like he was doing his job. A very dangerous one at that. RIP Sir.

Having two officers in the car did not help much a few years back with that guy in New York gunning them both down while in their vehicle. On an initial stop, unless he had reasonable suspicion that he needed backup before proceeding, he was following proper procedure. Police work is not easy and it it extremely dangerous at times.
May he rest in peace and my condolences to Det. Michel's family and to his department.
Cops should leave people alone.
What was the crime? Was anyone hurt? Was any property damaged?
Imagine a beautiful world where cops are afraid to accost regular citizens because the RESPECT the citizens' ability to defend themselves.
