DSP Hosted Honorary Commander Induction Ceremony

The Delaware State Police conducted a ceremony which recognized the selection of the 2016 Honorary Commanders on February 3, 2016 at the DSP Academy located at 1441 North DuPont Highway, Dover De. 19901. This ceremony was the first formal event with each partnered civilian commander. (photo attached)
Troop 1: Captain Jennifer Griffin partnered with Representative Bryon Short
Representative Short was elected in 2007 to Delaware’s General Assembly following the House of Representatives 7th District special election. He holds the Chairmanship of the Economic Development, Banking, Insurance and Tourism Committee. He is also co-chair and founding member of the ad-hoc Small Business Caucus.
Troop 2: Captain Jason Sapp partnered with Donald C. Keister, Jr.
Don is a native Delawarean who served in the United States Army as an artillery officer stationed in Germany. Currently, he is headmaster at Caravel Academy, and in 2013 helped in founding a nonprofit organization called “atTAcK addiction” in which their mission is to spread the word about addiction by educating students and the community, assisting families in their quest for information, and supporting those in recovery.
Troop 2 CIU: Captain Pete Sawyer partnered with Jose M. Somalo
Jose is the publisher/owner of HOY en Delaware Newspaper, the largest and longest running Hispanic publication in the state, covering all three counties on a monthly basis since 1996. HOY en Delaware was recognized at the national level with the 2013 José Martí Gold Award for Outstanding Newspaper (less than weekly) by the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP), and the local level with the 2014 DCRAC Board of Director Award.
Troop 3: Captain Glen Dixon partnered with Ava Stallings-Hardy
Ms. Hardy has worked as a Community & Economic Development Specialist with First State Community Action Agency, Inc. since 2004, providing leadership & resource development training, community & capacity building and strategic planning to low-income, at-risk communities throughout Kent & NC, Counties. 
Troop 4: Captain Rodney Layfield partnered with Robert B. Arlett
Robert serves as the 5th district councilman on the Sussex County Council, representing southern Sussex County, extending from the Maryland line to the Atlantic Ocean, including the communities of Dagsboro, Delmar, Fenwick Island, Frankford, Laurel, Millville, Millsboro, Selbyville and South Bethany.  Elected to County Council in 2014, Mr. Arlett is a new face to County government who brings with him a strong desire to “preserve the past and prepare for the future.” Among his goals as Sussex County’s newest councilman are growing the economy, promoting transparency in government, and preserving Sussex County’s way of life.

 
Troop 5: Captain Darren Short partnered with Jim Weller
Jim was born in Delaware has lived in Sussex County most of his life.  When Jim was nine, he started working at a tire store in Lincoln.  He also worked with his Dad who owned a plumbing business. At the age of 16 Jim purchased the tire store where he had been working and up to this day still owns that same building.  Jim opened a second location, Weller’s Utility Trailers, in Bridgeville, and later went out of the tire business. He has been in business for over 42 years and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
Troop 6: Captain Mike Reader partnered with Frank G. Kaleta
Frank is currently the Director of Public Safety at the Christiana Mall in Newark, DE and has been since September 2001.  He has 29 years of Security/Public Safety experience in the shopping center industry. Prior to coming to Christiana, he was the Public Safety Director at Hudson Mall in Jersey City, NJ., and Regional Manager for Control Security Services in Secaucus, NJ.  He was also a Public Safety Director at Livingston Mall in Livingston, NJ and began at the Wayne Towne Center in Wayne, NJ working as a security officer before being promoted.
Troop 7: Captain Alice Brumbley partnered with Michelle A. Johnson
Michelle has worked at First State Community Action Agency, Inc. for 15 years.  During the first four (4) years of her employment with First State, Michelle was an Information Technology Manager before transferring to the Community Development Department.  Mrs. Johnson has provided technical assistance in the following communities:  Cool Spring, Pinetown, Delmarva Campground, Diamond Acres, Mt Joy, Ellendale, Possum Point, Slaughter Neck, West Rehoboth, and Coverdale Crossroads.  
Troop 9: Captain Tom Logan partnered with Anne Park
Anne Park has been working in education in the State of Delaware for 26 years.  The last 5 year as an administrator for the Appoquinimink School District where she is currently an Assistant Principal for the Alfred. G Waters Middle School.  As an administrator, she’s had the opportunity to work with Captain Jason Sapp and participate in one of his active shooter drills which ignited her interest in school safety.  She has continued to be active in the area of school safety by participating and helping organize district wide active shooter drills, conducting district wide tabletop drills, participating on the District Crisis Team and in the spring she will be helping to re-write the District Emergency Response Guide.
All of the Honorary Commanders are looking forward to their mutually beneficial partnerships and working alongside the Troop Commanders throughout the state this coming year.
