Oregon Bakery Owners Refuse to Pay Damages

The owners of an Oregon bakery are refusing to pay $135,000 in state-ordered damages to a same-sex couple who were denied service.

Melissa and Aaron Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, cited religious beliefs when they refused to bake a wedding cake for Laurel and Rachel Bowman-Cryer more than two years ago.

The couple were awarded the damages in July by Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian for emotional suffering, saying the owners had violated the women’s civil rights by discriminating on the basis of their sexual orientation. They were also slapped with a gag order that prohibited them from speaking publicly about their refusal to participate in or bake wedding cakes for same-sex marriages.

The Kleins have filed an appeal of the ruling and are defying the order to pay. They’re claiming financial hardship although crowdfunding efforts have raised more than $500,000 on their behalf, according to The Oregonian.

They need to put the money in an escrow account while they go through the appeals process, it's unlikely they will win. I would definitely appeal the gag order. That's beyond punitive.

The first thing these gays said is the marriage law would not affect anyone else...hogwash! Look at what it has done too private enterprise, either you do what WE want or we will ruin you!

Good for them! And 551A, How do you know they just have $135k laying around for an escrow account? I certainly don't have that! Many others don't, either!

This will get turned over in the end. In fact, persecuting these folks over their religious beliefs and targeting their business should give Sweet Cakes a legal & financial win.

That's all it is. Another way for the gas to push their agenda. You mean to tell me there isn't any gas out there in the same bissiness. Of course there is so why the harassment of Christians? ? What ever happened to taking your bissiness elsewhere. The gays a real tolerable aren't they?? Not!!

They were prosecuted for harassment giving out the women's address and encouraging people to harass them.
Typical hateful, illegal actions turned into a bid for religious persecution.

They already have a judgement. Guess the want some punitive and criminal conviction with it.

gays and transgenders will never see the gates of heaven, they will be condemned to an eternity of hellfire and damnation,so why can't we start them on their journey while they are living

Escrow can be considered income. Making it up for grabs if they lose. Trust fund can not be touched.
