Los Angeles unveils puny BMW electric police car

LOS ANGELES -- The sight of a puny, electric-powered BMW police car with flashing red lights isn't exactly going to instill fear in the hearts of this city's criminals.

But on Friday, the Los Angeles Police Department showed off the newest member of its fleet, a black-and-white BMW i3, a diminutive electric car meant for tooling around downtowns, not necessarily for a televised high-speed freeway chase.

BMW is loaning the not-so-intimidating police cruiser to the force for a year as part of Mayor Eric Garcetti's desire to get more electric or plug-in cars into the city's fleet.

"Today, we take another step toward becoming the most sustainable city in America," said Garcetti in prepared remarks. "This year, Los Angeles will become home to the largest city-owned fleet of pure battery electric vehicles anywhere in the country, and we will save taxpayer dollars along the way."

Pure all electric vehicles can beat 90% of the stock gas vehicles at a dragstrip. That's a fact. Look up Tesla. An electric motor can produce more foot pounds of torque instantly than a gas powered car can in a quarter mile. They have incredible hole-shots. Electric cars, that are designed to go fast (like Tesla, BMW), have speed advantages over most ordinary gas powered vehicles. Looks like LA has made a good decision for the environment, that doesn't compromise performance.

They didn't need anything that would go over 50 MPH to "catch" OJ!

I'm sorry. Most chases run further than an 1/8 th mile.

For how long little Dem ?

Now that you nit-pick, the drag strip is 1/4 mile. You comment without thinking, I suppose because you know nothing about electric vehicles. So sad....

It's all gridlock. You can only drive as fast as the 29439358349 cars in front of you.

But they are very, very quiet.

Do they come with rainbow bumper stickers?

All they need now on them is six handles, then they can carry the dead cop right in it to the hole.

You are absolutely correct. We have a hybrid with both an electric motor and a gas-motor. It is a rocket. Maybe what most don't realize is gas motors are limited in power. They get to a certain speed and level off. An electric motor just keeps turning out the torque and increasing speed, until you let off the pedal. And yes, it is very quiet.

Not all drags are a quarter mile! Even IHRA runs on 1/8 mile. I comment knowing what i say as fact, or i dont comment at all.You think your so smart. There are seriously fast all electric cars out there. That's a fact. But they can't run more than 2 hours or so or so fast for so long. Can hear it now..... Car 54 where are you? At the charging dock. Eta 4 hrs!

Your lack of electric vehicle knowledge is deafening. The more you post, the louder it gets.

The comment from an electric vehicle owner is refreshing, but I doubt it changes ignorant thinking by the uninformed.

In most cases a car like this is all that is needed in Salisbury. I support this and so should Salisbury.
