Police: Maine man shoots off firework from top of his head, dies instantly

CALAIS, Maine (AP) - A young man who was drinking and celebrating the Fourth of July tried to launch a firework off the top of his head, fatally injuring himself, authorities said Sunday.

Devon Staples and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks Saturday night in the backyard of a friend's home in the small eastern Maine city of Calais, said Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

Staples, 22, of Calais, placed a fireworks mortar tube on his head and set it off, he said.

The firework exploded, killing Staples instantly, McCausland said.

Tragic but really how stupid can people be? This type of person is bound to kill or hurt themselves sooner or later from sheer idiocy or bad judgment. Even worse is they are a risk to others too.

"In 2011, lawmakers voted to repeal a 1949 law banning fireworks, reasoning the industry would create jobs and generate additional revenue." Part of story

this is like Maryland and other states. We have no exploding fireworks yet but about ten years ground sparklers expanded greatly and there continue to be attempts by the industry to get more dangerous fireworks legalized.

Decades ago driving in Texas on the fourth the multiple radio reports of fingers blow off and other human parts damage was interesting to me. At the time only gold sparklers were legal in Maryland.

The other way Maryland is like other states is the increasing production of spirits by what seems to be everybody and the increasing acceptance and consumption of the same. None of this is smart.

I have a better idea. Allow citizens to take photos of cars displaying handicap stickers and their license plate that are parked in handicapped parking and email them to someone in enforcement. At $500 for a violation, this should provide local governments another source of revenue.
