Maryland appeals FEMA denial of riot disaster aid

BALTIMORE (AP) — Maryland is appealing the federal government’s denial of disaster aid to help the state and Baltimore recover millions of dollars in riot-related costs.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency denied Maryland’s request for a major disaster declaration last month, saying aid “is not appropriate for this event.” But in a letter Tuesday, Republican Gov. Larry Hogan said he believes providing assistance is consistent with prior decisions, citing a declaration after riots in Los Angeles sparked by the acquittal of officers in the Rodney King beating.

FEMA should have denied the request - and should continue to deny it!

I don't recall if the LA Mayor in the King based riots told folks to stand down and allow room for riots....did (s)he?

This should all be on the Baltimoron Mayor for telling everyone to stand down and allowing room for the riots! The entire community should work together to repair the damage they collectively caused!

I applaud the governor's efforts to get money from the federal government - but as a payer of federal taxes as well as this currently socialist states', make the baltimorons suck it up themselves! Maybe they'll realize that they got what they voted for - although you can't fix stupid!

When the "leaders" call to stand down and let them destroy, not assistance should be given. No extra dollars should be granted. Find the money in your own budget, or go pound sand. How about docking the criminals EBT to help pay for it?

Of course they would., it's not in the Obama martial law plan, now is it?

They destroyed communities and neighborhoods, let them rebuild it.

It was self induced. Sorry no money for you. FEMA stand strong.

Those who are responsible for the destruction are incapable and not inclined to rebuild anything.
With all of the video and still photos of those who looted and burned and destroyed property, how many arrest warrants have been issued to hold those people responsible and send a message to others? Three?

Why should all Americans pay for the stupidity by residents of Baltimore?

$2.5 BILLION in state and federal funds have vanished in Baltimore since O'Malley was Mayor. Find some of that.

Guess they should just resubmit after the riots that follow the 'Not Guilty' verdicts to come.

That said, points made about not reimbursing for self-inflicted damage are well reasoned.

It's throwing good money away. Anything done to fix or repair the riot damage will get crapped up again in no time. It's how they operate in these ghettos. They don't have any respect for anything. As far as any businesses go, you are only looking for trouble when you decide to set up shop in the ghetto. The only businesses that prosper are ones that sell plywood to board up all the vacant properties and those that sell security cameras.

Asking for money? Just send a bills to Rawlings-Blake. Time to pay up, Slimey Ghetto Queen Piss Poor Excuse of a Mayor.

The state nor the federal government should pay them a dime. Let the community rebuild on their own. They destroyed it let them rebuild it.

There is no use rebuilding it yet. Im sure when the police are found not guilty there will be more damage done.

I don't see how this would even qualify for FEMA funds. This was riots and looting. The Mayor of Baltimore dropped the ball on this. It is not up to the rest of the country to fund rebuilding their mess.
