Former UMES Provost Alleges Racial Discrimination

A former University of Maryland Eastern Shore provost has sued the university, alleging racial discrimination and unlawful termination against President Juliette Bell.

The Maryland Daily Record reports on the suit filed by Dr. Ronald Nykiel, who says Dr. Bell created different working and evaluation standards for him based upon his race. Dr. Nykiel is white.

Nykiel alleges Bell treated him differently than the rest of her cabinet members, none of whom were white, according the lawsuit. Bell brushed off “racially derogatory” remarks directed at Nykiel by other employees and refused his requests to hire needed, additional staff while granting similar requests by other department heads, the suit alleges.

In a statement, the university denied the racial discrimination allegations but did not comment further.

Nykiel also alleges Bell denied his request to take off work during the university’s spring break when stress began to take a physical toll on him, even though she and other cabinet members planned to leave the campus that week.

University officials deny the allegations.

The shoe is on the opposite foot this time. Let's see how much of an uproar this causes. I am sure it will be none, since he isn't African American.

I worked there, I was white and I was subjected to the same discrimination.
I left, it was an awful place, run by awful people.
Seems their culture is based on gossip and hate.
Enjoy the hood homies, I am in a better place.

I also worked there, and experienced exactly the same kinds of things. It started with human resources trying to find something on my resume to disqualify me, and continued from there.
It was very discouraging, because I tried to be a good employee and be kind and considerate to everyone, but the racism I experienced was shocking, especially coming from people who should deeply understand the ramifications of what they were doing.
I could somewhat understand if it was only the students, because many of them were pretty immature, but this was from the administration.

UMES.. students, faculty and staff.. if you want to have something to say about race relations, if you want to stop traffic and demonstrate, if you want to make a difference in race relations in this state and country, you need some credibility.

As it stands right now, you're up to your eyeballs in hypocrisy.

Today would be a good time to start turning that around.

I have no doubt that Dr. Nykiel's claims are true.

A good start at restoring your credibility and honor would be to promptly admit your errors and make them right.

Do you have the character and integrity to do that?

They wonder why people become "POSTAL" as they say.
He's fighting a loosing battle unless he takes it to the highest level
but , he will not , after all he is a liberal also. There are some lawyers in the Midwest that would have a field day with this university or should I say "want to be university". The college that gives you a third grade education with a masters degree.

I taught a class for the University which had absolutely nothing to do with UMES and during lunch I took the class to the campus cafeteria. After I got my food I found a table with just one black guy sitting at it and the black guy got up and left. Tell me the students aren't racist!

Every white person I know that worked at UMES is no longer working there. They couldn't take it anymore and left. There was no room for promotion and they always felt like second class citizens.

Why is there quotas for white businesses and governments to hire black, but places like UMES doesn't have to hire a certain amount of whites!

They are real doctors and they worked hard for their PhD's. They may not me MD's medical doctors, but they are doctors.

The idea for commenters, or their friends, who have actually worked there and personally experienced a hostile environment to contact the gentleman's attorney to provide some first hand supporting information is a good one.

I am black and work in an all white environment and it sucks.I feel for the white dude in an all black environment ,it sucks. We as humans got some real issues when we die.There are no special places in GODS KINGDOM. Heaven / Hell ,looks like we made our choice.

My child received a scholarship from UMES and all was going well up until they found out he was white. I was warned by a professor (friend) to make sure the scholarship was in writing and was verified before we showed up on campus. Hats off to him....he saved my kids scholarship. Not the best place for an education....but you can transfer to the college park campus once you are in the system. Bottom line....was our experience at UMES racist......You bet !!!

All the PhDs come from half baked schools. The professors are arrogant and ignorant all at the same time. Quite a combination for a group of clown fools. The degree you get from UMES isnt worth the paper it's printed on. Has been and will always be a joke.

How does he prove (evidence) these things happened to him just cause he is white? Or, is he looking to get a big out if court $ettlement cause they don't want the ridiculous PR?

The is no university in America that does not discriminate...with some it's gender, with others it's class or social status, and even biological (and fiscal) legacies with others. I am white and have dealt with discrimination at UMES. I have left the campus at night infuriated at insensitive and discriminatory treatment. However...that treatment rarely comes from fellow faculty or the students there to learn. I think that some in the UMES administration act in a discriminatory fashion because they can and it is a catharsis of sorts. Some racist behaviors are performed to solicit a reaction - others are far less conscious. Through it all it is not a black/white systemic issue - It is a leadership and example issue. I have heard administrators say that the college was getting "too white". I have heard administrators marvel at the incredible racial diversity we have. Ultimately you hope an understanding or equilibrium will be reached...because ultimately that university will close if if it if it cannot compete in the one arena color that matters most. The green one. Every time a racial incident is reported or a allegation is made the university loses one more planned donation. Unfortunately, the lack of funds negatively affect the faculty and students but rarely the administration. As a senior instructor at UMES with a very credible academic record, I can say that racism does exist at UMES, but rarely among the students (which is incredible), infrequently among the faculty, and yet quite discernible at the administrative level. Yes the school risks losing academic talent in the wake of those behaviors - so it seems the logical course is to attempt to make the administration more diverse - hopefully yielding a cultural acceptance observable in the majority of the student body.
